You cannot single out pit bulls for this atrocity. I've heard the same story about German shepherds and other breeds as well. They're just not publicized the same way pitbulls are. I was once bitten by a black lab mix simply because I looked at it in its eyes.

I understand the sentiment because I used to harbor the same thoughts about the breed. It’s all media hype.
Pit bulls are amazing dogs. The American bulldog was americas favorite dog at the turn of the century.
When I was a kid everybody said the same thing about Rottweilers and Dobermans.
The fact is that dog fighting uses the loyalty of a pit bull against it. They are bred and trained to fight. That’s not the dog- that’s shitty people who currently aren’t held accountable.
I happened to end up with a pit bull rescue (long story). She is the most gentle, loving, and SMART dog I have ever owned. Hands down. I would defend her with the same sincerity that she would defend me.

Define a "Pitbull"

People who own pitbulls are generally compensating for something...feeling like having such a dog makes them look "tough" or some such nonsense. Having such a dog, sadly, only makes one look ignorant. Like a previous poster said, you can never entirely trust a pitbull. Yes, I will admit, the majority are sweet animals, but they have been bred over the years for one thing: to fight and to kill. At this point, it is hardwired into their genetics. A seemingly sweet, docile pit can be triggered by who knows what. It can be something its owner or family has done 100 times. Time 101, the switch can flip and the ingrained instinct kicks in and tragedy occurs. Owning a pitbull is akin to spinning the chamber on a revolver every morning, putting it to your head, and squeezing the trigger. You may get away with it for a lifetime. You may get aways with it for years. But there is always that chance.

A pitbull is too large and too powerful an animal to take those kinds of chances with.

I don't have a pit bull, I do have a very old rescue Shepherd. He's an absolute ANGEL with kids, and even so, he is still harnessed, leashed, and controlled by an adult at all times. I'm not going to get into the breed argument, the simple fact is that no large dog should be completely trusted around vulnerable people. People anthropomorphize dogs and lose sight of the fact that they are animals who are not beholden to human logic.

I've taken care of dogs by myself since 6 years old. We had medium to large breeds including a german shepherd. None of them ever attacked me, even though they could've destroyed me easily. None were pitbulls.

Pitbulls were bred to fight bulls to the death in a death pit for sick sadistic pleasure of bloodlusting people. This is their nature and purpose. It is in their genes and cannot be "tamed".

I've seen adopt pitbull commercials all over the place including in children's TV. Why are these "humane society" trying to get kids to adopt pitbulls? They deal with pitbulls all the time and know what they can do! Completely irresponsible!

All dogs are animals, and all dogs and animals will turn to instinct at any time despite the amount of domestication, training or "love".

My bird dog mix about 45# will instinctively take on a pit or any other dog or animal introduced into the environment because she's an alpha (but a beta to my pack leadership) who protects her territory while establishing the animal pack hierarchy.

I have been attacked by a sweet, gentle, huge rott who I knew all her life who was protecting her owner, my mother.

I've had a large boxer, who knew me well, jump on my back and tear at my sweatshirt protecting his pups when I got too close.

I've seen multiple domesticated, trained dogs (pets) of all sizes lock on and tear each other apart over food.

And, both me and my dogs have been lunged at, attacked and/or bitten by almost every chihuahua that's crossed our paths.

This is all animal instinct.

Large dogs cause more injury due to muscle strength and size. Pits, rotts, boxers, mastiffs as a few.

And, any owner of any animal not treating the animal as an animal with animal instincts is just as dangerous as the animal. Any person in the presence of any animal not treating the animal as such is asking for trouble.

I am a huge animal advocate and a former owner of the sweetest, most gentle, hyper submissive pit I've ever met. My neighbors have two well-trained, social, happy pits who are also guard dogs. Each of these dogs is an animal capable of great harm to other animals and people...no different than the aggressive chihuahuas except in size and strength.

Train yourself, train the dogs, be aware, be responsible and treat them as animals that could turn to instinct at any time.

Pitbull isn't a breed. It's a general term uneducated people use often. Clearly any dog is capable of "flipping the switch" as you call it. I've owned my ABPT for 10 years and he's been around my son for the same amount of time. Never once has he shown aggression to anybody. loves cats, birds, even had a hamster he would let climb over him. Neighbors love him. Shouldn't I or my son have been mauled to death by now?
