Re: Children killed, mother injured by family dogs
I own a female pit bull.
We love her and she is the sweetest thing with tons of personality.
We NEVER EVER EVER treat her like she isn't a bomb ready to explode. She has never bitten, never attacked, and when accidently causes any pain or injury during play shows genuine guilt and remorse.
We still never ever ever treat her like she wouldn't flip her shit and turn into a murder monster.

Never let our guard down. Never off leash in public. Never brought close to people or other dogs without focused attention on behavior and reaction.

She's not a toy and she's not a teddy bear (well she is, but just for us). She is a beast built for killing and she is treated as such.

I've had pitulls all my life. Until 2019 three of my 4doggies were pitties. All of them beautiful, loving, intelligent, spiritual beings. We always treat all our dogs like they are family, never once had them bite anyone. Two of them passed away from natural causes in 2019. I now
have two pitbulls, a Chocolate Lab, and a Jack Russell Terrier.

The only one who ever bit anyone was the little Jack Rusell. She jumped out our car after taking her to the dog park and the neighbor kid started running so she chased him and bit him on the leg.

If you abuse your children they will grow up mean and angry. If you abuse your animals they will grow up mean and angry.
 Quoting: 4doggies

I guess the Jack Russell killed the kid?

If not than there is no comparison here.

How many examples do you need. Pits DO just snap and KILL inside their own packs.

These dogs KILL.

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 84145995

No, they don't just "snap". Like ALL PACK ANIMALS, they are instinctually defending, protecting or establishing a pack animal hierarchy.

They do not just "snap"...or as the other AC said, have a "psychotic break".

That's your assessment based on emotion, not fact.

You are inaccurately attempting to make this about the breed. It's not the breed. It's the size of the dog.

And how the dog...any dog...has been trained, treated and handled. In other words, the owner.

Bingo! The truth is all dogs bite!! My parents raised dachshunds, poodles for money they were breeders. Been around animals all my life and i can tell you with absolute certainty they will all bite your ass!
Had a shetlend pony that would bite anyone who didnt know how to ride it. Ive been bitten by fish, snakes, birds, dogs, lizards, racoons, even a child will bite your ass if your a prick!

If we were all to rid ourselves of everything that might bite us we would all perish from the earth! FACT!

The trick is to be wiser than the animals God gave you dominion over! Everything will bite you! Even plants eat meat! FFS grow a pair along with your life lessons so that you live long and are fruitful on the earth. Being scared of everything that can sink a tooth into your ass means you have childlike understanding.

Yes, indeed, an owner must establish him/herself as the alpha over the pack. Why? Because this is how PACK ANIMALS behave...not from the logic, reasoning and decision-making of the prefrontal cortex of a human brain.

If you own one or more, you are considered by the dog(s) to be part of the pack, and you better damn well take the alpha-leader role if you want to be safe and have a trained dog(s).

One must understand and be knowledgeable in the animal's instinct and behavior and train accordingly.

You again demonstrate your ignorance in the subject, which puts you at risk around animals.

Re: Children killed, mother injured by family dogs
I THINK I DIRECTED THAT AT THE WRONG PERSON.

BUT NO.

WE ARE ABOVE THE PACK.

IT'S THAT SIMPLE.

MAKING YOURSELF PART OF THE PACK LEAVES YOU TO BE CHALLENGED.

Whatever words you want to use to describe the hierarchy doesn't change the dog's perception to the training and command. I command the pack as alpha, which makes me part of the pack as seen by the dogs.

One could as easily make a similar philosophical argument that placing oneself "outside the pack" also opens one to be challenged.

Command the dog(s) as alpha. Full stop.

I ACTUALLY AGREE.

IT'S HARD TO SKIRT THE LANGUAGE OF ALPHA.

BUT IF YOU PLACE YOURSELF ABOVE A DOG, NATURALLY THE HIERARCHY WILL FALL INTO PLACE.
