I recently rescued AKA showed up on my property in the middle of the night half starved, a dog that's probably about 1/4 pit. I'm guessing German Shepherd and grayhound are the other breeds in the Heinz 57 mix.

If she had been full pit or I had young kids at home she would not have stayed more than a few hours. As it is I will not allow her in my house because I have some spoiled rotten dachshunds who rule the roost.

But she loves me. Lol. Making her a nice outside pen and I take her for a few hours of run a day. Yes, she has the energy to run for hours a day.

I figure whatever crap is coming ,I need a guard dog at home. Usually God sends me exactly what I need before I need it.

Was painting back wall of my camp with my Corgi lying in grass nearby. 5 acres in the country. Next thing I know a pitbull is charging and grabs Gus by his neck. I leaped from the ladder to smother and prevent pitbull from shaking/breaking my dog's neck like a rag doll. I tried everything to get pitbull to release his jaws from my Corgi's neck. To try to save my dog's life, and for leverage in hopes of somehow prying this monster's jaws open, I used my right arm to put a "headlock" around pitbulls neck and squeezed with all my might. I had to get soo close that the right side of my face was literally wet & dripping from the pitbull's lipps/slobber and there were teeth marks/scratches from rubbing! My dog Gus was going limp and about to expire from lack of oxygen/air from his neck being squeezed/clamped.

In a nano fleeting thought/memory.....my navy seal scuba diving coach's advice from 30 years earlier kicked in. He told me if in a Shark Attack and none of the other defensive methods/techniques had worked......to JAB THE SHARK WITH YOUR 4 STRAIGHT FINGERS ABOVE THE EYE AS IF YOU WERE GOING TO RIP SHARKS EYEBALL OUT!! AND IT WORKED. THE PITBULL RELEASED/DROPPED MY CORGI ON THE GROUND AND CASUALLY WALKED OFF.

Me not my Corgi have ever been the same since that day 7 years ago. I was 1 millimeter (my aorta vein & neck) from being DEAD, DEAD, DEAD!

About 15 years ago, sitting by a creek by a popular hiking trail in Fairmount Park, Philly, with my dog. Couple was trying to negotiate the creek bed with pitbull who was pulling them. Guy went to one side of creek, and they asked if they could let dog off leash and call it over. Stupidly, I said sure. Pitbull ignored owner and immediately came 200 feet across to me and my dog, a decent sized shepherd mix. My dog sat rigid still, like a statue, as Pit came up to us, and put it's nose almost up against my dog, as owner came running over. They secured the dog, and no harm, no foul. But, the pit's jaw was so wide, it could have opened it's mouth, and swallowed my dog's head - I never will forget that, just how WIDE it's jaw was - these dogs are like walking bear traps - their jaws are huge compared to other breeds. My dog somehow knew to be statue still, probably saved both our lives. It was an incredibly tense moment

And I will never ever assume that any owner has control of a Pitbull, no matter what they claim. Those dogs run on instinct. And if I had it to do over, would have said hell, no, gotten up, and left.

Pitbulls are not good family pets - they have jaws that could crush a kid's skull. . .
