.. just for future reference.. a good place to "shelter in place".

"Six feet beneath an orange grove in Mount Dora, Florida hides the largest underground atomic bomb shelter in the nation. The bunker was once the area's best hope for protecting the survivors of a nuclear war. Now, even locals don't know about the subterranean hideout beneath their feet."

"Peanut Island is close to the mainland and can only be reached by boat. A 10-minute kayak ride from the coast allows you to reach this paradisiacal island in Palm Beaches, Florida (USA)."

The soil and water in so. florida is going to be toxic for a very long time. It is a large boating community with diesel, oils and paints. Not to mention all the human waste. When Andrew blew through the florida population was @about 13m now @22million. That is alot of nasty self-serving human beings.

Not hurricane damage but flood damage they will say
 Quoting: tla

this guy knows.

you can't get flood insurance through your insurance, has to be bought through FEMA which most people don't buy.

and I'm in the same boat here in FL.

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 79794740

quit lying

How to Purchase Flood Insurance

To purchase flood insurance, call your insurance company or insurance agent, the same person who sells your home or auto insurance.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 83848395

Most flood insurance policies currently providing coverage in Florida are underwritten by the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). The NFIP is managed by the Federal Insurance & Mitigation Administration which is a part of the Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA).

.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 79794740

Flood insurance is underwritten by NFIP, but you secure it through your insurance company or they put you in contact w an outside “partner” agency who provides it. We just renewed ours in August, everything is handled through our homeowners provider.

Re: Hurricane Ian Info
Fun facts:

In 2013, Ron DeSantis voted against federal aid for the victims of Hurricane Sandy.

In 2022, Ron DeSantis asked President Biden for federal help with Hurricane Ian -- and Biden delivered.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 78068199

”I sympathize with the victims of Hurricane Sandy and believe that those who purchased flood insurance should have their claims paid,” DeSantis said in a statement. “At the same time, allowing the program to increase its debt by another $9.7 billion with no plan to offset the spending with cuts elsewhere is not fiscally responsible.”

...and then you have this:

Embattled governor faces audit over Sandy funds

"While promoting tourism at the Jersey Shore in the wake of Hurricane Sandy is certainly a worthy endeavor, recent reports have led me to believe that the state has irresponsibly misappropriated funding allocated by Congress from the Sandy aid package and taken advantage of this waiver for political purposes," the letter said.

DeSantis was right.

This is going to be an insurance nightmare.

Hurricane Charley was $24.6 billion. This will be more than double that.

Florida home owners insurance will be unaffordable for most people.

They tried to raise mine from $4,300 a year to $11,000 a year this time...

I told that company to get fucked.

Found another one who would do it for the same rate as last year but they are a nobody company, probably never payout if I need it.

lol.. I've seen that in my neighborhood. Difference being.. I now live in Arizona (a native of florida) and it was a micro burst with absolutely no warning. Suddenly a 75mph wind then whoosh, porch flyin by.. then just as suddenly calm light rain. Nature is awesome!
