My brother said a lot of people got it a lot worse than him. He is in a newer subdivision that was higher than the rest of the community. There is no utilities operational, according to him. He has a generator.
Sorry I don't have any more info, but I only talked to my brother briefly, as he had a lot of cleanup to do. The old oak trees on his property got knocked down. He has to get someone to remove them, but in the meantime, wood, insulation, and other debris has to be picked up. He said the whole area is a mess.

Thank you for the update! Much appreciated! I'll try to get in touch with my family there tomorrow. I know they've had a busy day and probably have no power or water either. I'm hoping as long as they've been there they do have a generator.

Re: Hurricane Ian Info
Future building and architectual design for coastal cities and Florida should be looked into by home owners/businesses if rebuiling new. It’s worth it to look into design and building materials. Costs more up front, but worth every penny. Expensive! Build a smaller home and live safe!

Not an architect nor engineer. So, if others here have additional input/corrections to my post, please feel free.
Currently living in one of these homes, I just wanted to start getting this info out there for further discussion. Maybe begin a new thread as well.

Here’s just a few examples:

1. The Building Materials:

ICF (‘Interlocking’ Insulated Concrete Forms) and several variations on the market like it exist.

[link to weather.com (secure)]

2. The Shape:

Deltec: [link to www.deltechomes.com (secure)]
And this can be constructed with ICF! (see #1)
There are a few other manufactureres as well. I think one in Canada which has beutiful designs too.

I live in one of these old homes. Took direct hit from hurricane Michael in 2018. No problems but a small area of repairable roof damage. And this home is one of their earliest Deltec design models. Post terminte infestation, cheapest building materials and all.

3. The Shape and Construction- Dome Home - The Big Daddy of them all!
Can survive a tornado!

Must be made reinforced concrete. There are many that are not the cement type which are not acceptable. A true dome must be professionally constructed.
Tried to get one of these West coast Florida was listed on Zillow about 3 years ago for about 158k. Lasted only a few days and went fast.

There is concrete and then there is CONCRETE!

Ultimate strengths can vary by a LOT.

From a strength of under 1,000 to over 10,000!

All depends upon the recipe.

"
Designation - Compressive strength
M5 1 : 5 : 10 5 MPa ... 725 psi
M7.5 1 : 4 : 8 7.5 MPa 1087 psi
M10 1 : 3 : 6 10 MPa.. 1450 psi
M15 1 : 2 : 4 15 MPa.. 2175 psi
M20 1 : 1.5 : 3 20 MPa 2900 psi

M25 1 : 1 : 2 25 MPa... 3625 psi
M30 Design Mix 30 MPa 4350 psi
M35 Design Mix 35 MPa 5075 psi
M40 Design Mix 40 MPa 5800 psi
M45 Design Mix 45 MPa 6525 psi

M50 Design Mix 50 MPa 7250 psi
M55 Design Mix 55 MPa 7975 psi
M60 Design Mix 60 MPa 8700 psi
M65 Design Mix 65 MPa 9425 psi
M70 Design Mix 70 MPa 10150 psi

Then there is the matter of rebar.

When I was a young engineer at a plant, I had to remove 2 concrete piers that had been the foundation for a big liquid tank.

I put a crew of 10 guys out there with a few 90 lb jack hammers, and cutting torches and they were totally unable to make any progress after hours of trying.

Finally had to rent a large vehicle with a hydraulic breaker on the front. It still took an entire day to remove these 2 piers. ANd the guy running the hydraulic breaker said I owed him my firstborn kid for the punishment he endured operating that thing.

Tightly woven rebar in all directions, and the strongest concrete mix on earth. No hurricane would make that thing fail.

DeSantis, FEMA defend Lee County evacuation amid growing questions

Few events are as ripe for second-guessing public officials as hurricanes. And as we continue to try to grasp the scope of the damage done by Hurricane Ian, one big early question has emerged: Should evacuations have begun sooner in Florida’s Lee County?
[link to www.msn.com (secure)]

Answer: Yes, the order should have come sooner - lawsuits forthcoming!

The death toll from Hurricane Ian climbed past 80 on Sunday as embattled residents in Florida and the Carolinas faced a recovery expected to cost tens of billions of dollars, and some officials faced criticism over their response to the storm.

Desanti has his nutz in the grinder.

I really liked Dr Postel's idea to put as much resource and effort into evacuations up front as we do to recovery after-the-fact.
