Too damned stupid to make his own health decisions without posting a stupid poll on GLP to decide for him.

Now THAT is stoopid.

Do yoga.

Won’t do anything to heal your back but if you stare at the ladies groin in front of you for long enough it’ll take your mind off the pain.

POLL: HELP! My back went out a few weeks ago - do I keep going to the chiropractor, or stop seeing him and do exercises?

This poll may help anyone down the road whose back goes out.

I was lifting some heavier things, probably incorrectly about 2.5 weeks ago, and the next day my back went out when tying my shoes.

I went to the chiropractor and believe he helped the first time I saw him or maybe two, but after that it seems seeing him 3 times a week for a few months is over the top and maybe even detrimental.

Anyone have any advice on getting a functional back, after the back goes out?

Go to a physiotherapist instead of the chiropractor.

Inversion rack.

Causes the spine to pop, decompress, and relax like nothing else.

I bought mine from Amazon about 2 years back for like $300.

I use it everyday, for a few minutes, and I can't begin to tell you how well it works.

peace

THIS.
Popped my back twice so far, inversion rack is pretty much the best thing around.

Also, for sitting around get one of those "zero-G" recliners.

See a really good massage therapist. Learn how to do eft. I would suggest Brad Yates on you tube to learn and practice.

Check your vitamin mineral supplements. msm is a good choice. See a doctor of oriental medicine.

Get some arnica rub. "the rub" is the best for pain. also get some homeopathics for pain to take orally, they work very quickly.

Look at why you are stressed, and then practice breathing to release the stress in connection with the above.

Physical exercise is also good, relaxing walks in nature especially helpful.

Go out and do volunteer work, taking our minds off our problems and helping others is an excellent cure.

Re: POLL: HELP! My back went out a few weeks ago - do I keep going to the chiropractor, or stop seeing him and do exercises?
What's wrong with your back? Have you gone to a doctor to have it checked out?

I do exercises for mine, but that's because I was examined by a doctor who told me it was a muscle problem.

I know of someone who injured her back and went to a chiropractor instead of a physician. When the chiropractor couldn't help her, she then went to a doctor. She needed back surgery, but since she waited so long before seeing a doctor, they didn't dare operate due to all of the scar tissue that had built up. She suffered with back pain for the rest of her life!
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 76288549

If you have back surgery you also have pain for the rest of your life. I've never heard of anyone who only had one back surgery. Usually they end up with 3 or 4. Because it creates scar tissue, it gives you phanthom pain from the opiods they usually prescribe. I only have a bad knee and I am reluctant to get it worked on. It might start me down that surgery to fix a surgery road, also.

Re: POLL: HELP! My back went out a few weeks ago - do I keep going to the chiropractor, or stop seeing him and do exercises?
Inversion rack wont help everyone, for me, it caused more pain. It really, really depends what the problem is.

Fascia stretching exercises, especially ones while sitting, can be a beginning to healing. You need to be walking if you can, circulation helps with inflammation. I agree with the hip thrusts. But see, all these things depend on what YOU did to yourself and no one will know, except for you.

For me, hip thrusts into the air while laying in the bed, then turning over on my stomach and lifting my self up with my arms, then laying back down, repeatedly, helped the most. You leave your hips and below on the bed, so it's kind of like a back bend. Bend one leg out while doing it for an added stretch. Then, stand up with your feet hip width apart, lean over slowly allowing the weight of your arms pull you down to the floor as if you're going to touch your toes. Do these things as they are comfortable, don't ever go just one more when you think you might be at the limit, and try to do it several times a day instead of a lot at once.

My experience with the chiropractor is that if you have gotten yourself tightened up and can't release on your own, they can help. Beyond that, the constant readjustment aggravates the problem. They SHOULD be teaching you gentle stretches to rehabilitate the area, along with exercises. I've only known one chiropractor in all the years I've tried them who did this.

I would avoid any drugs by pharma and go the natural route of anti inflammatories. Not only do they lack negative side effects, they have extra benefits for your health as a whole food item.

Cut out sugar and starches for a while. Try to add a lot of fruits and veggies into your diet. Help your body help you.

As a side note of what I find strange, dirt biking through the woods helps mine, a lot. Something about jostling back and forth, up and down, loosens my lower back in a beautiful way. I've also heard jumping on a trampoline gently can help a lot. I did it a little the other day and it did seem to help after the initial fear of having made things worse. I plan to do it more. I wrestle 150#+ goats on a regular basis so I deal with my lower back being uncomfortable often.

Re: POLL: HELP! My back went out a few weeks ago - do I keep going to the chiropractor, or stop seeing him and do exercises?
It is quite possible that you either pulled something that takes up to six weeks to heal, or you have a slipped disc. In that case, it may take time for the disc to move back in between the vertebrae. Possibly traction will help this.

Every back problem I every had needed multiple approaches

Stress management

Proper hydration, electrolytes and minerals like calcium and magnesium to keep muscles relaxed

Heat, time lying on a heating pad

Stretching can be helpful, as well as specific exercises to strengthen the core - try this.... sit up straight, hold your hands up in the air - feel the core tighten. This is one of the easiest ways to exercise those muscles without doing much.

And lastly - time doing treadmill, walking, stair master type exercise. Any time I get regular about doing this type of thing about twice a week, my spine loosens up, spasms going away, things start popping back into place, and I no longer need a chiropractor.

You might also want to wear one of those waist belt supports that assists you when lifting or doing manual work for a while. It helps prevent further or future injury.

Hello there, I saw your thread but didn't have time to read through it..but suffering with back problems myself, I wanted to jump in and offer up a suggestion that is almost miraculous! So if somebody already posted this, I'm sorry for the repetition. I fell down years ago and ended up knocking three disc's out of place, one pressed directly on the Sciatic nerve...had surgery about 13 years ago and all was well until another injury. A co-worker recommended this to me. I'm in Calgary Canada...but I'm sure you might find a location near you. I'm sorry for the pain you are going through, as I know it feels more like you're existing and not really living. Hope it helps friend hf

Re: POLL: HELP! My back went out a few weeks ago - do I keep going to the chiropractor, or stop seeing him and do exercises?
I voted to do daily exercises instead. BUT, they need to be the correct ones for your issue.

If your back went out doing a forward movement, this is what you NEED TO AVOID. WHat does help, is a backward movement (think the yoga 'Cobra' pose - as far back as you can, hold it, repeat 10 times.) You will know this is the right exercise if you feel no pain in doing it, AND your back feels better overall afterwards. Then repeat these backward stretches on the hour - or several times per day at least.

Then, after 6 weeks of no back pain, you can start re-introducing forward stretches as well. Must be very gentle to start with, as scar tissue is not that flexible, and you don't want to retear anything.

In future, before doing any heavy work involving your back, do the backward stretches both before and after the work. This is protective, and helps avoid issues into the future. Goodluck!

(If you found what works for you, please share.)

95% of all back pain (etc.) is where the muscles meet the bone.
Let's just call it "Arthritis". It's an "inflammation".
and Ibuprofen was originally formulated to relieve this condition.
Is it curable? No. But Ibuprofen reduces the inflammation though,
and therefore, the pain.

note: since it's inception people have started using
Ibuprofen for just about everything, which is Stupid.

It's for Inflammatory Arthritis, and that is all.
(It's also bad for the Kidney's, but only if you use too much of it.)

When my neck went out, I researched online and found some exercises to do. I ended up hurting myself worse...lol

I went to the doctor and she ordered Voltaren (sp?) gel to put on and ordered a muscle relaxer. The voltaren gel helps to relieve swelling...it takes a few applications before it works well. It is over-the-counter now so you don't need a prescription, but it is best to go to a regular doctor anyway...for documentation and they can order tests/x-rays to be sure you don't have a fracture. I had a small fracture in my vertebrae (degenerative disc disease) which is why the exercises didn't help me any and made the problem worse. Just be safe and go to the doctor.
