POLL: HELP! My back went out a few weeks ago - do I keep going to the chiropractor, or stop seeing him and do exercises?

If you can't get stronger prescription Diclofenac or Celecoxib, then Ibuprofen (800mg. every 6 hours WITH FOOD) will start to work. It takes 2 days plus to BEGIN to fully work.

Rest it until, don't irritate the injury by stretching or gyrating/moving around.

Once you start to feel less pain, you're not done yet. You can re-injure yourself very, very easily by something as simple as standing up.

When my neck went out, I researched online and found some exercises to do. I ended up hurting myself worse...lol

I went to the doctor and she ordered Voltaren (sp?) gel to put on and ordered a muscle relaxer. The voltaren gel helps to relieve swelling...it takes a few applications before it works well. It is over-the-counter now so you don't need a prescription, but it is best to go to a regular doctor anyway...for documentation and they can order tests/x-rays to be sure you don't have a fracture. I had a small fracture in my vertebrae (degenerative disc disease) which is why the exercises didn't help me any and made the problem worse. Just be safe and go to the doctor.

Voltaren is topical Diclofenac. I had some as prescription from 10 years ago. That ONLY works on very near surface swelling from a bruise, and only when an internal anti-inflammatory is ingested.

Take an anti-infammatoryfor a while and more importantly get your nutrition right. Eliminate all foods that contribute to internal inflammation and hinder digestion.

No exercise for awhile, nor chiropracter.

THANKS for all the great replies! I have read them all.

What I did so far:
Called the chiropractor and cancelled all appointments for this week. I'm starting extra walking and exercises today.

No to the chiropractor. My back goes out periodically and always gets worse by PT or chiropractor.

Walking is the key. Fixed my back a couple times just by walking a distance twice a day.

just an update.... i've been using my tens shocker unit thing the last couple days, but instead of putting it directly on my back where it hurts, i've found much of the pain is actually coming from the hips. so i put it on my hips/thighs and the back pain has eased up quite a bit.

hope it continues to help. may be worth a shot for you as well.

I give the chiropractor a shot for a short time and then did exercises and if that fails get an MRI?
