That’s sad, they had plenty of time to get out…
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 80587438

Most thought the storm was going to hit Tampa directly. That's what the forecast models were saying.
It didn't take the eastward jog till yesterday morning. By then it was too late to do anything. They had to hunker down in place.

You never really know with a hurricane.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 81591109

That's right, they got the track wrong. We thought it was coming up my way. Everyone here was out getting supplies and preparing, it was a zoo here. But, then it took a turn east and that was it. Too late for those people to leave. It takes a long time to prepare to evacuate, especially if you have kids, pets, elderly, etc. It's not as easy as people think.
 Quoting: daughteroftheking8

People should always be prepared in hurricane season. Or don’t live there. I was born and raised there and every season we prepared. I have family that didn’t want to leave and now have to deal with the aftermath. They are alive at least. I moved away because I got tired of it all.

Were they just not expecting it to be so bad in their area ?
 Quoting: Vicious Deplorable dollop

As a Floridian they were told for days it would come on shore North of Tampa and be a Cat 1 when it hit land. There was no reason for them to even be concerned in the area.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 65430107

well your all massive stupid kunts then

i had CC

in the firing line as soon as it tracked closer

while it was still well out to sea

the eastward track swing happend a week out
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 82683704

Do you have kids, pets, take care of elderly or handicapped relatives?

Some people's lives are a little more complicated and easier said then done trying to evacuate at the last minute when they get the track wrong.

Where are people going to run to? Go to a shelter with a 100 other people for a week and sleep on a cot? Get on a interstate with the trafic packed and crawling at 20 mph? If you get to a hotel it is at least 75 a night and then you can't get back home for several days to a week until they get the roads cleared from trees and power lines.

My heart goes out to those affected by this storm.

Hurricane Andrew killed 65 people.........

'Hundreds' is an extreme amount for a random storm, as an initial casualty projection.

What are we really talking? and why?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 80992179

Those were verified. Hundreds more were killed that weren’t. Swept out to sea or loaded into refrigerator trucks. Many illegals.

won't know till they start counting that sanibel island was blown off the map judging by video so anyone there is floating in gulf now ..
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 67929869

Heard it might be 200 people (Sanibel and Captiva), but cannot confirm.

A lot of people may have died in their cars, too.
 Quoting: Happy in Nature

Has anybody heard more about Sanibel? My niece and her hub stayed...I assume that by the time the forecast track went south from Tampa it was too late, mandatory evacuation or not.

They were on W Gulf Rd, not the beach side but the other side. It looked on one general drone view of somewhere there, that a lot of houses were standing this morning, despite the surge I read was 14 feet. So hopefully they were safe in the attic.

We relatives are all waiting to hear. No cell service of course, and now no road in or out since the causeway has a breech.

Not really. They kept saying on Friday and Saturday it was going to Tampa Bay or northward. They said south of that didn't need to worry.

You need LOTS of time to prep, secure and leave your area, not to mention traffic can sometimes block you from leaving making it safer to stay.

Has anybody else wondered why USA has the most tornadoes or hurricanes .... they say its the wind systems that bring these kind of conditions, but who are we to know.. if we go back 100 years ago, how OFTEN did we experience such weather... is there any history of that... it just seems like its machines creating these storms

My wife and I were considering buying a rental home in Cape Coral in 2020. Looks like we would be underwater today if we had. This is horrible what is going on, and it's going to take months for that area to recover.
