No basements in Florida?
 Quoting: Hahahelboy

Most of Florida is barely above sea level. Basements aren't really practical.

Were they just not expecting it to be so bad in their area ?
 Quoting: Vicious Deplorable dollop

As a Floridian they were told for days it would come on shore North of Tampa and be a Cat 1 when it hit land. There was no reason for them to even be concerned in the area.

Most thought the storm was going to hit Tampa directly. That's what the forecast models were saying.
It didn't take the eastward jog till yesterday morning. By then it was too late to do anything. They had to hunker down in place.

You never really know with a hurricane.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 81591109

That's right, they got the track wrong. We thought it was coming up my way. Everyone here was out getting supplies and preparing, it was a zoo here. But, then it took a turn east and that was it. Too late for those people to leave. It takes a long time to prepare to evacuate, especially if you have kids, pets, elderly, etc. It's not as easy as people think.
 Quoting: daughteroftheking8

well your all massive stupid kunts then

i had CC

in the firing line as soon as it tracked closer

while it was still well out to sea

the eastward track swing happend a week out
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 82683704

Do you have kids, pets, take care of elderly or handicapped relatives?

Some people's lives are a little more complicated and easier said then done trying to evacuate at the last minute when they get the track wrong.

I have family that just moved to the west coast down there that have not replied to any of my texts since yesterday.

I had dreams I was with them and we were climbing into vehicles and amusement park rides and getting tossed around and actually getting dislodged form our seats or going up and down impossibly twisting roads.

Will? It was NPRs top topic this morning.

I'm a Florida native and sickned.. the situation could have been handled better had they paid attention to the history of hurricanes in the region.

Right but anyone with a brain would understand that a storm this big is unpredictable and plan accordingly.

I am empathetic but also a realist. If you were anywhere on the west coast of Florida you should have made some type of movement.

Don't assume the track they predict is legit. Assume they know jack shit and do what you need to do.

It’s not yet clear how many fatalities or injuries have been sustained due to Ian, and there have not been any official reports or numbers from state officials."

Even if people could get to the roof, how do you withstand 155 MPH winds sustained for HOURS? The wind itself will blow you off, and forget about getting hit with debris....

This was a very odd storm, in that usually they decrease in power directly upon landfall, and within 30 minutes or so are a Cat 1 or 2.

It's very rare to have Cat 5 power for literally hours and hours, which is actually what the storm was, A CAT 5.

I assumed maybe 50-100 dead when I saw the video of the flooding, but certainly not 'hundreds'.

This was an EXTREME storm of the very greatest magnitude, and it may regain strength again and make a second landfall in George or South Carolina, although at a much lower intensity.
