She accepted responsibility for the horses. She fenced them in. Therefore, she is responsible for the regular welfare checks. Her staff would have become aware that the fences had been cut, wells turned off on the first day or two after occurance. It is blatantly obvious that they checks were not being done. Veterinarians and LEO are already on the case. Doesn't look good for Madeleine!!

I was thinking if only they had had a pond. Doesnt seem like it was a very good place for a sanctuary. Heartbreaking about the horses.

Good for you. Now, run far from Madeleine if you want to have a reputation as a person that genuinely cares for animals.

Have you looked at her website? All I see is a LOT of money spent on furnishing a resort that only the wealthy can afford. The wealthy vacationing in Wells, NV? Ever been to Wells, NV? It was never gonna happen. Madeleine is nuts. T. Boone cut her loose because not even he could finance her cocaine habit...and when he found out she was sleeping with the real estate agent that sold her the Mustang Monument? That was the final nail in the coffin.

I used to ride on Warm Springs Ranch long before it became "Mustang Monument." They irritated hay fields teemed with wildlife. Hundreds of deer, pronghorn, some elk. Migratory birds, hawks, eagles. Not anymore. Nothing. Just a bunch of dust and hundreds of sick, starving horses. There is plenty of documentation of that. Even enough for a congressional hearing;-)
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 65610068

You are so not subtle in your arrogance. Your assumption of me just having any experience of horses in taking their pictures is ridiculous. I don't need to prove anything, I am fully committed to my cause.

So was the nail in my front tire this morning from you and your's?

Updated article on this issue, the horse sanctuary is now going to be closing.

[link to www.lasvegasnow.com]

I-Team: Mustangs found dead, $100K reward offered to find culprits who sabotaged horse preserve

"The Mustang Monument is an eco-resort and sanctuary for 700 or more wild horses which were ransomed and rescued by Pickens before they could be sent to a slaughterhouse."

"...However, due to the continued opposition by the BLM and Elko County officials -- the eco-resort is closed. Pickens and her staff still operate the monument as a self-sustaining foundation, and when she's on the property, she helps feed the Mustangs...."

"...The sabotage occurred in the northeast corner of the property, more than an hour's drive from the main ranch house.
..."

...Pickens staff contacted the Elko Sheriff's Office, but they're not confident there will be much of an investigation, so Wednesday afternoon, she told the 8 News NOW I-Team she was offering a reward of $100,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the persons responsible...."

From someone who knows a few things....remaining anon

"Start by questioning the HIRED WILD HORSE SHOOTERS OUT OF ELKO, NEVADA -- Two brothers have stuffed Wild Horses in their homes, and BLM knows about this -- and has for a long long time, and they know all the hired guns that shoot wild horses in that area, hired often by welfare ranchers! BLM POLICE NEED TO DO THEIR JOB -- OR GET THE HELL RID OF BLM -- AS BEING NON-USEFUL IN THEIR JOBS -- IT IS TIME!"

BLM Sets Meeting of National Wild Horse and Burro Advisory Board for September in Elko, Nevada

The Bureau of Land Management’s National Wild Horse and Burro Advisory Board will meet September 8-9, 2016, in Elko, Nev., to discuss issues relating to the management and protection of wild horses and burros on Western public rangelands. The two-day meeting will take place on Thursday, September 8, from 1:00 p.m. to 5:15 p.m., and Friday, September 9, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (The meeting times are local time; Elko is in the Pacific Time Zone.) The meeting will be live-streamed at [link to www.blm.gov]

[link to www.blm.gov]

This exact time last year, prior to the BLM big meeting, they conducted the "emergency gather" at Cold Creek, NV. Pictures of some of the Cold Creek Horses are in my signature.

Problem Reaction Solution, setting the emotional tone of the meeting, another pattern for the Bureau of Land Mismanagement.

Cocaine you say? Seems like wherever someone has a cocaine problem there is a government connection bent on destroying their previously altruistic venture.

No I can't say I've vacationed in Wells, NV. However, I've camped in the area, some years ago with another group. And found the land to be receptive to people and animals that appreciate the land and all it has to offer, especially if they have come there to not rob it. I found the landscape to not have all that much vegetation, some grasses and sagebrush. A place dry enough where a buried time capsule would last longer than expected, without degradation.

There are some hot springs, and if ponds or lakes are to be constructed, they must be lined with soil materials that keep the water in, as the volcanic soils tend to allow water to soak into the ground faster than usual. Spent limestone dust from the scrubbers of a coal fired power plant is one such good material for this.

One thing I've noticed is when someone comes into a bit of money, there is usually someone in that organization who "helps' them to spend their money, to make their endeavor bigger than ever before. If it's horses, suddenly they build a big indoor horse riding facility, several guest houses, and the like. I have a feeling that this is what happened to the Mustang Monument, with the BLM ready to purchase the property for a much reduced price after the venture fails prematurely.

In any venture, it is important to have people working there who are motivated not by money, but by the vision of what the venture really is about.

In the case of horses, I have found that sometimes it is better to stay with them perhaps near their watering source, rather than in a nice comfy house, as horses especially do like to include their caretaker human in their herd. Being with them does provide the necessary security for their safety at no additional cost.

Something else that can be done is to fly one of those better camera equipped drones to check on the remote watering sources, and fence lines, flying high above so as to not bother the horses unnecessarily. Again it always helps if the person doing this is not motivated by a paycheck.

No, according to their website, the Eco-Ranch aspect for paying guests is closed at present, not the Mustang Monument itself. The continued care of the wild mustangs will continue. Most likely they've tightened up security and put more of an emphasis on finding those responsible for the vandalism.

It is interesting to note that the ranch claims to be self sustaining. Job applications continue to be accepted for various guest services for seasonal employment (May 1 – September 30th). It's almost September now, so this would normally be the end of the season anyways.

The website isn't up to date. She has had a couple of drunks working as ranch hands for the past while to keep the place running. Apparently, they slacked off over the summer and didn't check on the horses for weeks. When word finally made it to Madeleine, she decided to concoct this wild story about the vandalism to cover her ass. NV State Dept of Ag isn't buying it and has investigators on the scene. There is no possible way her story is true.

The vandalism of the fences, disabling of the water sources and etc. are typical things cattle ranchers do to people they don't like. How do I know this? Because it was done to me. All of those things, plus more. Standard textbook rancher crime. Must get handed down in the family or on the agendas in those cattlemen's meetings.

I still have some evidence of the crimes against me personally, done back in the 90's on my farm. But the water source shenanigans, typical cattleman/rancher terrorism, truly. Letting the horses out via cutting fences, typical as well.

Any astute person knows this. All the ad hominem info you provided = Gossip, typical behavior and dirty deeds of rancher/cattleman shenanigans as well.

I lived through it.

Got the nails to prove it. Wink.

It is all in an effort to drive the people away from the land, sell, etc. Usually there is a real estate agent involved as well, and an assessor.....

...and my apologies. The Mustang Monument IS now closed as it is being treated as an enormous crime scene. Dept. of Ag is scrambling to figure out what to do with 700 wild horses, many of them in very poor health. The BLM already has hundreds of horses that no one wants to adopt. This is going to be a horrible story if the State ends up having to put them all down. But, they may have no choice. This is all the fault of Madeleine. She may have the $$ to solve the situation, but the horses can't wait for years for her to be prosecuted and fined. This is absolutely disgusting.

yep. Reminds me of a horse friend in another region who broke his hip, was laid up in the hospital for a couple of months or so, and wasn't able to tend to his horses. Paid some local kid to feed and water the horses. Apparently the kid had better things to do, didn't like my friend or whatever, and by the time my friend was able to get to the barn, some of his horses were dead.

Haven't read the whole thread, but I am pretty sure someone has pointed out that ranchers sometimes aren't too fond of wild horses.

There was also some outrage a few years back about starting up horse meat plants to sell to such countries such as France.

Other things they do:

Lure your employees away or pay them off to do shenanigans for them....

Put someone in front of one of the two people of the "couple" to try to break up their relationship, make them cheat, so they get the scandal going in the town....creating gossip, causing divorce so the property gets sold...

Infiltrate the targeted property and release the animals out overnight so when you wake up in the morning there is massive chaos to deal with....

Hunt on the person's property and leave a burning campfire...

Intimidate the female by scaring them about their safety, suggesting they need weaponry...

Use a truck and drive through wooden fences, cut wire fences with cutters.

Injure/maim animals using axes, or scaring animals to run into fences injuring themselves...

Another big one:

Kill the dogs or canines that guard the property. THey either shoot them or poison them, and remove them most of the time so there is no evidence.

Guard dogs gone, poof.

My wolves, two females, went poof like that during my ranch days.
