Okay, here it is right here:

"Pickens has spent $25 million to create her Mustang Monument sanctuary and eco-resort which is home to 700 rescued mustangs, but the plan has faced continuous opposition from the Bureau of Land Management and Elko officials sympathetic to cattle ranchers, as well as wild horse advocates."

That says all I need to know, Harry Reid and BLM churning the land for personal profit. Kill all the animals (and people if necessary) is their MO.

OK thanks.

I will not be ashamed of myself for defending with my voice something that needs defense. I am a wild horse advocate. If you can't respect that then go find a rancher or horse slaughter thread you would be more welcomed in.

Who do you think you are talking to....ashamed of myself....pffft.

Then defend the horses and their right to live instead of a horse captor. The BLM, sadly to say, does a better job of caring for the horses than she does...and I'm not saying that they do a good job.

I will defend the horses as I see fit. Not as a shill tells me to...

The BLM sucks, they killed 30 of my friends, Cold Creek Wild Horses with a bullet to the brain, rather than saving them. They bold-faced lied to my face that if the horses got in the trailers up there they would save them and bring their health up.

Over 30 horses were shot, including a pregnant mare. Don't get me started on the BLM.

Have you been to Mustang Monument? I have. I also grew up 10 miles from there, so I know the climate, the lay of the land. I know from my experience of being there at the monument that the horses were being neglected. Many have observed and have complained. That would be the source of some of the BLM and local gov't opposition to her plans. Not all.

In the beginning her project was well received by most horse advocates. That has changed and that info detailing her incompetence and mistreatment of the animals can easily be found.

The Clintons, Rockefellers, Gates, George Soros are all wealthy philanthropists that say they are out for the health and welfare of our planet. Do you believe them? Why should we just beleive Ms. Pickens when she claims good intentions?

Here is what I think of the BLM just in case you wondered...

the second horse is dead, from what the BLM calls "lovely euthanasia" which is a bullet to the brain. The first horse lost its mother by same because she was deemed too skinny.

I don't understand why the horses don't have greener pastures. I understand that they are in a desert but it certainly doesn't seem like it should be home to them. Clearly they depend upon water troughs and hay.

Is the desert their actual habitat to live in? Where did the horses come from originally? Is it the cattle ranchers that want the horses out of their area? Is that the real reason for the BLM other than other nefarious deeds that they do.

I had heard some years ago about T Boone Pickens and his plans with the aquifer but that was the aquifer in the panhandle of Texas that I read about.

Different horses in different areas and climates. Some horses live in more fruitful climates and others, like the ones in my pictures, live in more severe habitats.

I owned my own farm in the past and was harassed by ranchers that bordered my property. I was appalled at what people are willing to do to animals and such to make their statements or intimidate/send messages. Really sick stuff being done to protect personal interests. The rancher on one side of me used to throw 4 inch long nails into my pastures on a regular basis, among other things.

The irony was I had 7 water wells, 5 of which were achieving great results, the rancher with the attitude had to have their water trucked in....

"Terrorists"? Lol! Madeline is in financial troubles now that she isn't married to T. Boone anymore. Her land/water grab scam under the guise of saving wild horses has failed. I call BULLSHIT! She more likely had this tragedy staged to benefit her in some way.

Also, fences may have been cut, wells shut off, but why are the horses being managed so, that they are not being checked on a daily basis, as all ranchers do for their own livestock in summer heat like this? To not check on a daily basis constitutes gross negligence. Madeline as owner of this operation should therefore be held accountable for the inhumane conditions the animals have been subjected to.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 65610068

Anyone who would do this is pure garbage scum.

but your question is good. Why weren't the horses being checked on?

It clearly is gross negligence.

I don't understand why ranchers and the blm are apparently hostile.

It is private land.

And what constitutes "Her land/water grab scam under the guise of saving wild horses has failed"?

It seems to me if you buy some land with water rights and put wild horses on it, that is your business.

Reading the thread I see there is at least a partial answer to the question of why the hostility.

"Have you been to Mustang Monument? I have. I also grew up 10 miles from there, so I know the climate, the lay of the land. We shall see when the investigation progresses. I know Madeline has had to hire three law firms just to deal with the bureaucracy from the BLM alone.

Some(very few) trace their origins to the horses that were introduced to the SW US by the Spanish Conquistadors. Most of the herds were more recently owned by ranchers that kept breeding bands that inhabited the outback. From these bands they would capture and break the colts for work and range riding. The herds were abandoned over time and what you have left are herds that reproduce unchecked and inbreed terribly. They overpopulat desert areas and do not migrate. They are not as smart as a range cow and cannot locate sources of water from miles away. They drought out often and die of dehydration.

700,000-Year-Old Horse Genome Shatters Record for Sequencing of Ancient DNA

[link to www.wired.com]

BY PIECING TOGETHER the genetic information locked inside a frozen, fossilized bone, scientists have deciphered the complete genome of an extinct prehistoric horse that roamed the Yukon more than 700,000 years ago. The work rewrites the evolutionary history of the horse and smashes the previous record for the oldest complete genome ever sequenced. In doing so, it redefines how far back in time scientists can travel using DNA sequences as their guide.

Every time a cowboy throws a leg over the saddle and gallops off on his horse, he’s riding on top of 4 million years of evolutionary history. But this history is mostly a mystery. We know surprisingly little about how natural selection and thousands of years of selective breeding by humans have shaped these animals on the genetic scale.

The wild horses are not overpopulated. THis was just proven in a court battle that the BLM operates on skewed data:

Judge rules for wild-horse advocacy group in BLM suit

A federal judge in Billings has ruled that the Bureau of Land Management used outdated information when it decided to remove wild horses last year as part of a population management plan at the Pryor Mountain Wild Horse Range.

“I hope this decision sends a signal to the BLM that it cannot get away with ignoring its commitments and duties to protect these amazing wild animals, who are actually underpopulated,” Best said.

FoA alleged BLM violated federal laws by basing its 2015 Pryor Mountain horse removal decision on an outdated 2009 Herd Management Area Plan that established an appropriate management horse population of 90 to 120 wild horses. The appropriate management number, the group said, was based on a 2007 range evaluation, which the BLM was supposed to recalculate within five years.

I owned 6 horses, lots of great pedigrees including German Warmblood Conquistador lines and Thoroughbred Secretariat granddaughter, and they all were fragile and inferior compared to the Mustang yearling that I adopted. She never had one vet bill and didn't need shoes because her feet were so solid and sturdy. She grew to 17 hands tall and was the typical ugly ducking story but in horse tales....

Wow, sorry to hear that you had to deal with such nonsense. It doesn't make much sense. You have your property and animals and they have theirs. I guess they didn't want horse ranchers around the area. It's none of their damn business as to what you choose to do with your land.

Very soulless people that would think nothing of harming animals.

Any ideas as to helping the Mustangs? I believe the BLM will be history just like all the other alphabet agencies. Just a matter of time and my understanding is that they are very short on time.

LOL!!!! Whoa, girl. I was taught that the earth is only 6,000 yrs old. Almost believed it, too. Your logic is similar. Yes, there may have been some horses in the Yukon 700,000 yrs ago. Are they the direct source of the feral(not wild) domesticated horse that now roams the American West? Not even close. bitchesbetrippin

The militarized BLM needs to be dismantled. They have not done what they were hired to do in managing the natural resources of our lands. They have proven time and time again that they are sell outs for special and personal interests. Deep Pockets rue the day, money talks and the animals and other resources suffer. The Wild Horse is protected by The Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act of 1971 but instead the BLM are managing the wild horses and burros into extinction, removing genetic diversity from the populations among other things. They do no studies as to what gets removed, which is gross mismanagement, in my opinion. Lots of ideas but BLM as it stands is not part of any of it.

For instance, they say they counted over 500 horses at Cold Creek Nevada this time last year, they removed approximately 270 in an emergency gather because some were really suffering through the summer. That should leave at least 200 horses up there right? You know less than 12 have been seen in the entire year!!! That is blatant fact.

It seems to me that livestock operations on lands in Nevada have always been a cover for more lucrative gold, uranium, gas, oil, or some other subsurface mineral extraction, as well as proposed solar energy projects. If wild horses are on the land, then other more lucrative special needs cannot occur. Getting the wild horses, mustangs, and burros off the land by whatever means would be indicated. I can assume that jobs are scarce in that region, and past higher paying jobs such as those offered by the BLM or other companies would have motive to do whatever was necessary to get all those horses off that land so that other uses for that land can go ahead.

Here is what I think of the BLM just in case you wondered...

the second horse is dead, from what the BLM calls "lovely euthanasia" which is a bullet to the brain. The first horse lost its mother by same because she was deemed too skinny.

I was wondering if they were shot. Sorry, I have not read all the links but I have seen this before. BLM takes a lot of pride in killing animals. They love killing people too so you all be careful out there.
