Re: My experience job hunting.
I do some hiring for IT and developers.

From a hiring perspective there's just a lack of passion from applicants to actually do the work. Most often times Im mainly looking for the least lazy person. Things I see constantly.

-lives a bohemian lifestyle and changes jobs ever couple months. Great it takes years to get good at certain jobs but its nice to know your gonna leave whenever you get an itch. This is very common for people in their 30s.

-People 25 and under I can sum up 90% of them with this: Their mom made them go to school, they play video games all day so they went for computers. They dont know anything or have any interest in how they work. They dont even get on their home computer and cant even tell you what version of Windows it runs. They used some tools in class but thats extent of their computer knowledge. Oh and they want to be a developer to make mobile video games, but they never taken any steps to start that. They also have no idea what video game they want to make. They basically have never done anything with technology unless it was a class/group assignement and they cant give you any details on that. "i dont know the teacher did something with Sequel". Thats been my last 100 interviews with people under 25. Somewhere along the way these people were told if they just show up for class they will get a degree and their life will be roses. Nobody talks about this but many degrees arent the open door they once were. Most of them seem to be paper farms these days and businesses are catching on.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 75543000

OMG, THIS!!! I am pushing 30 & wasted most of my previous decade in & out of college, until I finally got my BA 2 years ago & noticed this with the younger generation at school!!
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 75550130

My boss refuses to hire anyone over 40 but the 20 somethings he hires do not last a week. He has been through 7 in the past year for one position. Everyone has tried talking him into hiring someone older but he refuses because he believes people over 50 should be euthanized. Very uncomfortable.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 77569219

Wow. How old is your boss? I would definitely start looking at other places to work. He sounds like a monster.

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 75276081

I sympathize with you. My gf is having the same difficulty.
HR reps are pretty transparent and agree they don't want employees over 45.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 77569219

If you can record any of them actually admitting to that, your search for work might be over, as once you win your age discrimination lawsuit you should be pretty well-heeled.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 79234724

The laws are trickier than people think. My boss made an announcement to 400 employees during a company meeting that he had too many older workers working for him and he was going to do something about it. They get away with it because you have to prove you specifically lost your job to ageism but in certain states they can fire you for anything. If you're over 45 and came back from lunch a minute late, you can be fired legally even though they really let you go because of your age. Companies want younger employees because of what they see as a better competitive image. Being a great employee is less important to higher management.

Been unemployed for about 9 months now.

Yes majority was during the covid crap.

I've filled out hundreds of applications, sent my resume to hundreds of places, nada.

I see the same job postings day after day.

I go to places in person, i ask about job postings online.

I am met with snarky attitudes, i am told that if they are interested they will call me.

I am also told by some places that they are not hiring at all(despite an online job posting), or an outside company does the hiring.

Fake jobs, fake life.

Also I spoke with an unemployment counselor who works with the city, he told me currently there are way more people out of work than jobs available.

What does this mean? hundreds if not thousands of applicants for each job, and super picky employers

At this point getting a job is like winning the lottery.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 79104722

I can relate.

What I've concluded is that you have to either :

create a job for the new age,
Something that addresses covid issues, or just go into business for yourself.

Even if it's creating things and selling them online.

People want no contact, so online sales have skyrocketed.
The need for prepared foods, as going to restaurants is verboten.
So like maybe a food truck.

Amazon is always hiring now too, but it's like working for the enemy, but you could do it temporarily, to get on your feet to start your own thing.

Other than this, I have no great ideas anymore.
The state of the country is depressing.

In my case, every job I apply for, as my field of work very specialized, theres at least 70 applicants.

I'm about to try to open my shop, but it will be a while before money comes in regularly.
No bromo dude...

OP, at least here in NJ, the stone masons are crying for help. The local union hall here will collar any young fellow who walks by slowly and has all his limbs, lol. Seriously, they will set you up as an apprentice, give you $600 worth of tools for free and set you up with one of their members. Mind you, it’s real work, but I’m told that you can expect something like $400-$600 per week to start, annd the work is pretty much continuous.

Electricians need helpers, too, and if you don’t mind working on unheated jobsites in the winter there is plenty of work; and again, emphasis on work. You can’t be a slouch in these jobs, or you’ll get let go fast. As a famous coach once said, “You can’t put a price on hustle”.

Anyway, hope you find something soon!.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 79234724

Maybe that’s why illegals are coming in. They will work their butts off while the young people here want cushy high paying jobs right off the bat. And many of the non white American born youths want welfare and baby mommas.

Re: My experience job hunting.
When I lived in California, jobs were hard to find. It was like that in every blue state that I lived in. Now I am back in shitty Indiana and nearly every business I drive by is hiring. Plainfield is full of huge warehouses and most are begging for help and offer decent pay and benefits. The Burger King down the road is starting at 12/hr. My step son still says no jobs though, because he thinks he should start out as CEO making quarter mil a year, straight out of high school with no experience or skill. Any job is better than no job.

nobody wants to work anymore because

cost of living is to high and job wages are stagnant. Also the bullshit politics in workplace is enough to make anyone want to rip out their hair

Government thinks the solution is more government and red tape. It will surely fix the problems by forcing companies pay minimum of $15 an hour wont it.

It wont fix it. This will kill off the last of the brick and mortar stores. The only business left will be walmarts. And walmart will not take the hit on $15 hourly wage they will raise prices, replace more jobs with automation, and cut hours of the employees that are left

government does what it always does make problems worse.

About the same i see job hunting in Denver area, Also i see local truck driver wadges going down, for example one company that was starting out a year ago wadge was 27.00 hr now its 21.00 hr. . I see a lot of companies are doing it now and trying to get away with paying 18-21.00 hr !, way lower wadges than before. + majority of em are now doing those stupid pre employment assessment test's designed by the CIA. Oh boy if you then do get past that and get an interview they ask you all them stupid questions that are not relevant to the job position you are seeking.
I see the same job postings month after month for same jobs at the same companies over and over, its like like they are phony job postings to trump up fake job availability #'s or something.

I easily got work after age 50 after taking a year off and moving to a smaller city. I took their low starting wage, from then on got regular raises until after a couple years I was making what I had made previously.
I recommend accept whatever a company offers, for them to take a chance on you. Once they like you and know you are productive, they will make up for it in wage increases.

I don't know if the OP is still reading this or not but here's my take...

First, I have no idea if the OP actually REALLY filled out "hundreds of applications" and no one bit. Just the simple law of averages tells me that's sort of bullshit.

Second, I have a friend who is a real estate something something attorney. EXTREMELY intelligent. Was making 6 figures. COVID destroyed whatever line of work he was doing. There was no more need for his services.....anywhere. SPECIFIC line of law. He pissed and moaned to me about "no one hiring". I told him he was being too picky, and SOME money is better than NO money, and I asked him had he applied at Home Depot or FedEx or something like that. He poo poo'd that as if it was beneath him. I got in his grill and said "Bitch...stop being snooty. You're back living with your mama at age 55 with NO income. Get your ass over to UPS and sign up. They're ALWAYS HIRING." Guess what he's doing now? He's driving for UBER and GRUBHUB. Because SOMETHING is better than NOTHING. You may need to do shit you don't want to do.

Last...I happen to be in a career that is CONSTANTLY hiring, but you have to have the aptitude to be able to do it. And that is, 911 dispatcher. Constant hiring. It's a tough job. Pays well in some areas of the country. I've been doing it for 30 years. LOTS of turnover because it's tough. But we are ALWAYS hiring in the industry. But I have extra free time, so I approached a local company to see if they would be willing to hire me PT to clean windows at $15 an hour. Bam. Hired on the spot. I don't WANT to clean windows but I want to put a little away for a rainy day so I'll do what I need to do.

I'd like to see your resume and see what jobs you're applying for...

I hire for my co. here's what I see...

out of about 40 resumes typically there are about 3 good ones, ones where:

1. person hasn't job hopped every 6 months to a year
2. No huge gaps in employment
3. Rode the Covid train for the extra government handout
4. Have had jobs somewhat related to what we are hiring for

Do you have any of the above issues?

People who get attention here (if they have the above issues) are ones who take the bull by the horns, figure out who to call at corporate and make a nuisance of themselves.

Be a pain in the ass, get noticed, all of those jobs are not fake. Also take some ownership, the world isn't out to get you, you're not a victim.
