Re: My experience job hunting.

i know and i appreciate it

it's just moving is out of the question

i would have to move not only me but my toolbox

would cost thousands of dollars

then i would be living in my truck until i started working

not only that employers don't make a habit out of hiring homeless workers from out of state
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 79104722

How did you get so negative????

When I had no family I was like, ok I'lll move ... I'll wash dishes or do whatever, get an apartment ...

OP seriously, I don't know how old you are I think I read 38 that's pretty old .. but I'm 45 and your attitude is terrible.

You are totally in the move-to-prosper category. The world is your fucking oyster, ffs.

Seriously.

Moving always costs thousands. It's tax deductible. It's what you do, for life.
 Quoting: SugarSand

i have family

i have 2 kids and a wife

it's not about that

it's about physically not having thousands of dollars to move

i would even leave them here, we have discussed this idea many times, and they are fine with it

i'm 37 by the way

and when me and my wife decided to have kids we were making combined 90k a month, so don't give me that speech about "don't have kids when you are poor"

we both got laid off when the company we worked for was shut down and we have never been able to get back to that level of income, been struggling ever since
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 79104722

That's a different story, OP. A storage space is different from 2 kids and a wife ... that makes a huge difference. I had a husband have to go away for work and it sucked.
 Quoting: SugarSand

i wouldn't mind going to the truck driving school near here and becoming an OTR driver

it's 5k dollars that i don't have, not to mention the cost of getting to the school every day ( 30 mins away adds up in gas everyday )

like seriously i'm just venting my shit right now out of frustration

and now with Biden in charge it just seems ultra bleak

Auto mechanic positions?

OP you might have to move.

I don't see how you wouldn't find work in NJ, except your attitude might be a hindrance to advancement!!
 Quoting: SugarSand

i understand this but i don't have thousands of dollars to just leave and take a chance in an unknown place

not trying to make excuses just telling you how it is

i need a trailer to move my toolbox, then i need a storage locker to put that toolbox in, then i will be effectively homeless until i find a job

it's not that i wouldn't mind trying this, i just can't
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 79104722

yes, you can

and now is the time, evidently

you rent a storage space there, and leave your shit until a later time

you arent taking a chance ... you have no kids, no mortgage ... you are simply moving to work ... you will find work

come on for real
 Quoting: SugarSand

you say you struggled to succeed in your job

let me ask you: have you ever had people accuse you of stealing money in order to get you fired?

has that ever happened to you?

i was that good at my job and making the older techs look bad that they conspired against me to make it look like i stole money

like what do you do in that situation?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 79104722

No that hasn't happened.

But I've had to move on from jobs from where I felt unwelcome.

OP you just have to suck it up and move on. Forget about that.

Get over your thing with women, too.

It saddens me you have a wife, but you talk like that about how women have it so easy. You are missing the point.

You guys have to do this together.

If you don't have a mortgage, moving is still probably a good idea ...

You live in CO, so it's a Dem state, I'm in IL also a Dem state and they've shut down the economy pretty good for the past year.

Have you tried looking into being a mechanic at a school district or town?

I don't think Indeed is good for blue collar listings, I would try other sites.

Good luck, I would have a hard time moving too.

Im also in illinois. Hvac hasnt slowed down for us at all in the last year. Were busier than weve been in the 5 years ive been with the company.

like I said, been seeing the same job postings for the last 9 months and i've applied to them all

Ya thats a Big gamble. Have you seen the rates for uhaul rentals these days ? Holy smoke ! I was going to possibly take a railroad job in Notrth platte, Ne. but the cost to move there just from Denver was big boo coo $, Houses for rent there are cheap too but unfortunately as with everywhere else there were a ton of phony rental scam ads.

600 dollars to use an enclosed uhaul for a cross country trip

plus gas plus a storage locker for at least 2 months

you are looking at nearly 1500 dollars

then you have to apply for jobs as a homeless person essentially

not saying it can't be done but it requires a decent cash investment

To be honest I thought I was talking to a bachelor, not a married father of two.

It's a big struggle, my own dad had to work odd jobs and my mom too for years before he found his steady gig, which killed him.

It sucks. I know it.

But your posts, your attitude make you sound younger. You are going to have to get over your resentment of the situation, for your family. They can't have dad having that attitude, it's ruinous.

Otr sucks ! Typically youre out a good 3 weeks at a time away from home, which is great if you dont have a life, not married and no kids. Alot of guys find out quick its not all its cracked up to be. YA you think that you will make 5k a month but once you deduct daily expense's like meals on the road for example, youre spending a big chunck of change. + if you keep record of how many hours a day 7 days a week youre on duty and on duty not driving and divide that up by youre average weekly pay = not making squat .

Been unemployed for about 9 months now.

Yes majority was during the covid crap.

I've filled out hundreds of applications, sent my resume to hundreds of places, nada.

I see the same job postings day after day.

I go to places in person, i ask about job postings online.

I am met with snarky attitudes, i am told that if they are interested they will call me.

I am also told by some places that they are not hiring at all(despite an online job posting), or an outside company does the hiring.

Fake jobs, fake life.

Also I spoke with an unemployment counselor who works with the city, he told me currently there are way more people out of work than jobs available.

What does this mean? hundreds if not thousands of applicants for each job, and super picky employers

At this point getting a job is like winning the lottery.

Yes in 2019 I had the same things happen. People were saying how great the economy was and how many jobs were available! It was bullshit. Everywhere I interviewed was just doing it for some sort of protocol - they either didn't really need anybody or had already hired from within. Some of them were more than blunt about it. Others seemed uninterested thru the interview and ended by saying my resume would be "kept on file." I realized they were all WASTING MY TIME and every one of them deserved a sound beating!

We hire guys with experience all the time. Theud rather hire a new guy so they can train them how they want.
Anyone can walk in off the streets and theyve got a chance here.
Nobody wants to start at the bottom and work there way up. I started at 13 bucks an hour not even 5 years ago. I make 30 an hour now.

Re: My experience job hunting.

Yes. It is the policy of many companies, prob for legal reasons, to post all jobs openings regardless if they are available. You see this with promotions and also when a business is considering doing real hiring in the future, to get an idea of the market or if they are considering firing someone and they want to see if it's worth it.

From my experience, about 1/3 of job listings are for positions that don't or won't exist. I know this because the companies themselves tell me. They usually say, "sorry, we just eliminated that position."

Oh goodness,
Don't hire young teenage girls-- they will distract the male employees
Don't hire 20 somethings-- they are going to get pregnant
Don't hire 30 somethings-- they have a family to care of
Don't hire 40 plus-- they are menopausal
Perhaps its the inequalities and assumptions that make women crazy
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 79387251

I think a lot of women screw themselves by assuming that they won't get hired because of their age ... which translates to childbearing or not, etc. They make themselves crazy.

I got hired twice while visibly pregnant.

People were shocked I was job hunting while ready to pop.

It wasn't the hiring managers that were the problem, it was all the ladies saying ... "they aren't going to hire you because you'll be out for 3 months already ..."

There is a lot of old school thinking going on that really doesn't apply in corporate settings anymore.

That's true. I have many unpopular opinions, and how I feel about private sector corporate life is one.

I advise all the girls I know - if they have no idea what they want to do with their lives - to go to any affordable college and get a degree in whatever pleases them, and then go for whatever they can in the corporate world. HR, Accounting, IT, QC, Audit .. whatever.

I've been in corporate life for 25 years, and there is no end in sight. I have co-workers pushing 80, still happily coming in, and still valued by the company.

If you increase the bottom line, you are valued by the company. That's the way to go for average kids, boys and girls, who can sit still long enough.

If the company/profession has government contracts then for women (and those who can check "disadvantaged" boxes) it is often better for women than for the men

If your profession unfortunately doesn't have these contracts, good luck.

Corporate life can be very good for many women, as they may offer maternity leave and other perks

The biggest problem is the naysayers.

So many people are so set in their attitudes about jobs ... "this industry only hires young" or "that industry only hires immigrants" or "they won't hire you if you are pregnant" or "walmart wont hire me, so I must be unemployable"

It's 100% about whether you can add value ... are you worth more than you cost?

OP is discouraged by the wording of the ads and experience of others.

All you need to think about, OP, is, can I make them money?

I'm a software engineer. I've been working in the private, corporate sector writing code for money since 1998. No government contracts. Business.

People work for money. Business runs on money. I don't know what jobs BESIDES government jobs, that don't respect the bottom line more than anything. Color, gender, doesn't matter. The bottom line matters.

If I didn't make them more money than I cost them, I wouldn't have a job, that's for sure.

Re: My experience job hunting.
something had changed around 1998. used to be that employers had to hold your app so many days and had to except them. Now it is all temp garbage (which is just a low hit on the working poor) that probably gets dollars for every hour of your time, other, of course from expenses that may occur just to be able to have the privilege ofholding said job. The news paper listings is for something else and has to do with record keeping, appearances of numbers and the court system use the references in your local regestry to reflect the whole fake system. it's a mess. Work for yourself, might be rough the first two years but it will get better,. Why do people hire other people to do the chores they don't want to? well I say put your bid in high if not super high.
