This looks interesting. But I dont have all the windows updates. I cant download them and I dont know why. It starts and then says updates failed. So I dont knolw which on to click on.

I don't think the MS update pages works if you have "activeX turned off. Many programs turn it off for security. When you go to the MS page and it fails it should ask you if you want to turn the program on it needs. Or it tells you how to turn it on. I forget exactly. You also have to have "updater" turned on.

Dang! I'd forgotten what a HEADACHE PC's and updating was! Just glad I don't have to go through it anymore.

Your flash may have gone south too...sometimes temps that hold flash and active X controls get boggy.

[link to kb.adobe.com]

There's a link to the uninstaller - after that just reboot and reinstall flash and the newest active x controls.

Should fix you right up.

Where do I get the download for flash? Thanks.
 Quoting: **Scor~Pios**

I just had an alert for a flash update yesterday, may you need to update your flash player? I don't know though just guessing.

Re: Computer problems.........HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
try clearing out all your temp files using a program like cc cleaner.

also, try it in another browser. if youre using ie, download firefox. see if ti still does it. if it does, then you have a flash problem and not a browser problem.

First this was not installed:
Security Update for Microsoft.Net framework, version 1.0 service pack 3(KB930494)

I seem to be frozen again in this window. I will answer your question after I restart.
 Quoting: **Scor~Pios**

Go to "taskmaster and click on the tab that says "processes". It should list all the things that are running right now and how much of your ram memory they are useing. IE should be a big hog but if you see anything that looks like its hogging lots of memory then that might be the program you need to turn off.

Re: Computer problems.........HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You may simply have connected to a bad node on your DSL.

Here's a website to check your connection speed:

[link to www.speedtest.net]

It's quick, simple and safe. If your download speed is below 400 or 500 kbps, YouTube videos won't play smoothly.

If your speed is low, just reset your DSL modem. Unplug the power to the modem, wait a couple of minutes, turn off the computer then reconnect the modem and restart the computer. This will force a new connection and reset your IP address. (Also comes in handy when you run afoul of the ban-bots or piss off a cranky mod.)
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 538050

Thanks for the link, AC! cheers

I'm gonna fall waaay behind now; I'm gonna go exploring here, lol!

THe main diff is there's not as many hoops and bits and stuff to go wrong, nor is there all the diff things to turn off and on and the hidden apps running that you don't need bogging the system. Plus, not as many virus, worm, flowers, etc that can infect. You can have alot of things going on, just doesn't seem to bog as much or as bad.

I disabled a bunch of stuff. I only used the first link so far. Wow I disabled more than 8 items but Im still st 40 running processes. Thanks for the info

Wow....I have three browser windows open. A notepad program and I'm listening to an internet radio program and I'm barely spiking 35. sounds like you have a program running in the background thats taking up a lot of resourses. eithe a Spie-wear program or a normal program.

At the bottom right hand side of your screen...how many icons are showing up?

First this was not installed:
Security Update for Microsoft.Net framework, version 1.0 service pack 3(KB930494)

I seem to be frozen again in this window. I will answer your question after I restart.
 Quoting: **Scor~Pios**

I have 6 icons. Comando firewall, comando antivirus, sound, internet connection, yellow thing telling me I have windows updates(that I cant install) and now my task manager.
After I went in and closed many of the running programs(used the links you gave me)I was down to 40 processes. When I restarted it went back up to 49. As im typing the usage is 6%.

Just remembered this; apologies if it's been posted already.

If you want to manually install Microsoft updates (at their site) you'll need to be using Internet Explorer. Won't work in other browsers, eh. (I use Forefox)
They'll also want you to verify that your Windows version is "legal"...

Re: Computer problems.........HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
a friend of mine has had the very same excat problem.

it was a damaged HDD in the end. the hdd had so many bad sectors (surface errors..aka surface scratches and what not...happens from time to time) that it slowed down everything.

in the end the hdd was so badly damaged that the OS couldn't even boot anymore...before that everything, even inet, was EXTREMELY slow and took forever to load and sometimes hung up completely.

suggestion: backup your system to a external drive...just in case.

As of two days ago, the only thing my TaskManager shows is the cpusage page.
I have no menu, no buttons...no nuttin'.
I can't change it to see what's running or to end a program.

Anybody have a clue as to where all my 'controls' went? scratching

You definitely seem to have to many serives running.

Visit the sites that tell you which ones are safe to turn off.
But some times it's not that easy as you may actually be using some. You have to learn which ones you need. The descriptions in service for the most part explain what the service does, if you know you don't need it then turn it off.
