It's a manufactured coin shortage. Banks are doing this.

Another fun fact. Coinstar machines normally will kick out silver coins into the return slot on the front of the machine. If you happen to walk by one, glance into the return bin on the front. I've found deformed/dirty coins and several silver coins as well.

To ANOTHER AC RED, I didn't DISCOVER ANYTHING!

I'm just spreading the great news to those who might not have known!

So chew on a very large bag of juicy dicks and enjoy the mistake you made by leaving bad karma.

Remember, it's called KARMA for a reason. What comes around, GOES around. You'll receive reciprocal in MULTITUDES.

I'd bet a fin YOU have NO idea as to the aforementioned...

What a coincidence.

Just tonight my son just told me something scary.

He collects scrap and has scrap yards he sells it to.

Well... he just said the price of scrap has gone way up and scrap yards are EMPTY. He said there are usually piles as big as houses throughout the yard. Now Nothing.

The owner told him that EVERYTHING is going to China! There was a mile long line of trucks waiting to get loaded to ship this week.

The price of all scrap metal has AT LEAST doubled in price! All just in the last couple of days.

He just said carbide metal went from $2. a # to $8.00!

They're even buying old Christmas lights! Tires were usually deducted from the price paid but now they are being cut up and sent to China.

Lead batteries from .15 to $1.50 a #.

We are so stupid!

- Preparing for a world where a techno oligarchy run by some central planner AI makes social credit score decisions for planetary resource allocation?
- Or occams razor, idiot central banks hyper inflated currencies and this is just the fallout

saving

my pennies and nickels for 20 years. For same reasons
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 78085571

I think the proper term is hoarding not 'saving'.

That said at one time I had a thousand rolls of mint fresh copper pennies.

$500 dollars worth. Got short on cash and sold them back to the bank for $500.

If it ever gets to the point where coins will help you, you will have a lot bigger problems to worry about.

OK here's what to save:
1.) ALL pennies 1982 or older (obviously wheat, and Indian Head pennies have a greater numismatic value), but an average 82 or older are 95% copper and 5% zinc. TRASH anything after '82 because it's close to the opposite amalgamation (copper coated zinc).

Those '82 pennies are worth $.0307 EACH! Imagine a penny being worth 3 cents! SAVE 'EM FOLKS!

2.) ALL Nickels 2014 and older, because of the increase in the price of nickel recently are worth almost TWICE their face value.
$1.00 of these are currently worth $1.73!

I find it funny that MOST stores currently have a "change shortage".

I think the government is culling as many of these coins as possible, artificially creating this "shortage" while they replace the valuable coins with worthless pieces of SHIT.

NOTE: There are only 2 US coins that are not allowed to be melted down. 1 is the penny, the other is the nickel. I smell a rat here.

The ONLY saving grace is you're allowed to melt them down for scientific purposes or demonstrations.

I will personally be SCIENCING the SHIT out of my neighborhood!

Hope this helps if even a bit.

EDIT for a decimal point error. Pennies (pre 82) are STILL worth 3.07 cents EACH!

2.) ALL Nickels 2014 and older
 Quoting: FN 5.7AP

The composition of nickels has not changed in many decades. It did not change in 2014. Nickels are cupro-nickel, 75% copper and 25% nickel, up to the present moment.

The way to do this is NOT to try to save individual nickels, onesy-twosy. Too much effort. Let the U.S. mint do the grunt work of accumulating, counting, rolling. Go to the bank and ask for a BOX of nickels, a mint box, containing 50 rolls of nickels (2000 nickels), neatly rolled and filling a box weighing 22 lbs. Cost: $100. Good investment. Buy multiple boxes. You can always take them back to the bank if necessary, whereas you cannot bring in large quantities of loose nickels.

You cannot do this with pennies since the pre-82s are not available anymore from banks. They ARE however available from portlandmint.com: 68 lb box, $100 face value (10,000 pennies), for $191 plus $16 shipping. Great deal. You can also buy a TON of pennies for about $5000, if you're that serious about it. All pre-82s, high copper content. They also sell nickels, though with a 12% premium over face value; might be worthwhile if your banks are out of nickels.

In other words: don't fool around. If you want to do this, DO IT. Not with loose pocket change, but by the box. Wholesale, not retail.

And one more thing: the value of these coins will never be in their melt value, but in their value in the event of dollar devaluation. If and when the dollar is devalued, likely that all dollars will lose value EXCEPT hard coins. Historically, in currency devaluations, coins are exempted because too difficult to re-do zillions of coin-operated machines. Your nickels could in that event wind up being worth a quarter or perhaps even a full dollar in today's purchasing power.

Nickels cannot be melted down for their metal, because (aside from the fact that it is illegal) too difficult to separate the nickel from the copper. Cupro-nickel is considered "contaminated" and unsuitable for melt. This could possibly change if, say, nickel value went to some wild high, much higher than today, hence making the costly separation worthwhile. But don't count on it. Probably won't happen, ever.

Also, in the event of a really hard crash/collapse (mad-max style), base metal coins could be very useful for local trade, in the absence of other media. Nickels would be great. Pre-82 pennies very good. And even post-82 pennies, which are 97% zinc, since zinc is not exactly cheap anymore. Spot price around $3500/ton, whereas copper is going for $10000/ton. Even the lowly post-82 penny could be useful for trade! Post-82 pennies can of course be bought at banks by the box, same as nickels, and it might not be a bad idea to have a few.

I meant to write "the value of the NICKELS will never...".

Pre-82 pennies would be at least theoretically meltable. However, hard to imagine that anyone would ever want to. Bulk copper for industrial purposes will always be available. The point of hoarding pennies (like nickels) is as MONEY under various scenarios, not in order to melt them down for bulk metal. They are neat, uniform disks of known content and clear identity, useful as MONEY.

Well, since banks hardly have cash to go around anymore, finding rolls or boxes of any coin is impossible where I live. All the stores are constantly trying to get coins from the banks...without success. This could be done years and years ago...now, not so sure.

With all due respect, did you even read what I posted?

I said PRE 82 pennies are 95% C O P P E R.

Yup! This! My daughter had to do a science experiment in fourth grade. She decided what would clean copper pennies best. We researched it together and in order to follow the hypothesis, we found we had to have the same sample of pennies and pre-1982 were 95% copper.

Yeah, yeah I helped her but she was 9 years old. I mostly let her do her own thing but just kind of taught her a bit about picking your test subjects, comparing apples to apples etc.

We had a great guy at our local market at the time that actually saved up about 100 pre 1982 pennies for us to use.

I wish I could remember the outcome, I think it was vinegar or salsa lol!

I really wish I still had the pennies

im seeing from quick research,

2003 and older nickels have copper in them.

thus 9 cent melt value.

so its even more than 50% tbh.

With all due respect, did you even read what I posted?

I said PRE 82 pennies are 95% C O P P E R.

Go back read it again, then tell me I'm wrong.

Yup!

The lesson you taught your daughter is way more the lifetime of pennies you may have accumulated! Good on YOU my friend!
