It's a manufactured coin shortage. Banks are doing this.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 73664514

WHY would the banks be doing this?
 Quoting: FN 5.7AP

Not only are you correct about metals value, but all US coinage is Treasury, not Fed. This means their value is established by law, not monetary policy.

Now, typically the coin follows monetary policy because people are dumb.

However, in hyperinflation (we're in it, for the dumb-bumpkins), the paper currency almost always becomes worthless while the coin maintains expected value.

This is why there has been a "coin shortage" for 2 years. Money handlers (not banks) have been slowly extracting huge amounts of coin from circulation.

Just as OP has stated: the older coin first for metals value, but all coin is being held out to flush out the coin caches that so many of us have.

When the currency changes, the coinage won't.

Follow OP's advice. It's good advice.

Uhhhhhno. Pre 65 on both dimes and quarters. Beyond that no longer silver. Man the tards are out tonight
 Quoting: Samsquanch Sammich

Coins are 90% silver because the zinc additive
makes them more durable for circulation.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 22935650

Except they add copper to the silver, not zinc.

(Well maybe a speck of zinc here & there.)

You'd need a warehouse full of pennies and nickels to make any worthwhile money.

Even if nickel went up 10 times... you'd still need a shipping container full.

This is true. It would probably be smarter to collect aluminum cans with CRV value.

I prefer quarters since theyre the only regularly circulated coin with an exact monetary value stamped into them. Quarter Dollar. Doesnt matter what the bankers do to the currency, 4 of them always equals 1 dollar. Good to have in the event of a dollar reset where dollar is revalued back down and a couple zeros are chopped off. Usually happens eventually.

To my understanding treasury mints the coins, fed prints the paper money. Coins are already worth more then paper money.
Banks/Fed wants to keep control over people, hence they are eliminating coins from circulation as they are gaining in value, while paper money is loosing its value.

Basically,

Treasury coins = people money
Fed paper Dollars = fed money

This is why we never switched to a $1 coin despite there being many arguments to do so, they just kept printing $1 bills even though they wear out fast and coins last forever

Coins don’t generate interest and are a treasury asset

Bills are on the fed’s account

They never cared about anything in the citizens’ interest

True in your limited understanding. However, in currency resets, coins are rarely, if ever, reset along with the paper currency because it's too expensive.

Here's what happens: Say you have $10,000 in bills and $100 in nickels. The currency gets devalued 100 to 1. New bills get printed and you turn in your $10,000 in paper for a nice crisp new-style $100 note. Your coins are still worth $100 - which is now equivalent to $10,000 pre-devaluation dollars.

Which is easier to save now - $10,000 in bills or $100 in rolls/jars?

Interesting..

So of course many countries used to have gold and silver coins..

This then changed to nickel and coppers, bronze etc.

Now I do metal detecting. I find lots of coins. Here where I am I have noticed that they aren’t even sold copper or nickel-they are plated nickel or copper onto steel!

So even more worthless. The currency has worked its way down to the most valueless format possible.

Might I also suggest gold panning, as that is becoming more valuable by the day. 23-24k no less

Europe switched to the Euro and sifted out all the coins from the different member countries 20 years ago

France melted down most of its pure nickel coins (they are demonetized)

All others as well - Portugal used to have some nice large copper escudos

Canada switched to nickel-plated steel slugs about 10 years ago

The 1c 2c 5c Euro coins are also copper-plated steel

Worthless trinkets, since 1971 and Nixon shutting down the gold standard, all coins have been debased

We are now at the end of that cycle

Yes I was referring to the Czech koruna, I’m sure you figured that out. If they were solid metal copper say, they’d hold up in the ground. But they don’t as they’re plated. Shame.

It reminds me as you say, end of the cycle. Many civilizations went through this process before falling.

You can still buy coins that were in circulation during Jesus lifetime.

Maybe one that was on the moneychangers tables when he flipped them over in anger & disgust.

Also if anyone has any interest, you can easily dig $5 FV of silver coins out of a good yard permission with a proper metal detector. That's nearly $50 melt for digging a couple inches down in the dirt.

Your post states that post 82 pennies are 95% nickel.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 75684896

With all due respect, did you even read what I posted?

I said PRE 82 pennies are 95% C O P P E R.

Go back read it again, then tell me I'm wrong.
 Quoting: FN 5.7AP

Yup! This! My daughter had to do a science experiment in fourth grade. She decided what would clean copper pennies best. We researched it together and in order to follow the hypothesis, we found we had to have the same sample of pennies and pre-1982 were 95% copper.

Yeah, yeah I helped her but she was 9 years old. I mostly let her do her own thing but just kind of taught her a bit about picking your test subjects, comparing apples to apples etc.

We had a great guy at our local market at the time that actually saved up about 100 pre 1982 pennies for us to use.

I wish I could remember the outcome, I think it was vinegar or salsa lol!

I really wish I still had the pennies

Wrong, US nickels are 25% nickel 75% copper and have been since they were first issued in 1866.

It's the only US coin still circulating that hasn't been changed:

penny in 1983 from copper to zinc

dimes, quarters, halves and dollars in 1965 from silver to Cu-Ni clad

small clad dollar coins starting in 1979

as a numismatist you should know this, unless you were referring to some other country (Canada's nickels are now plated steel)

if not, invest in a US coins red book and don't use words you don't understand!
