My intent was to disable AC posting in the thread only when I'm planning to be away from GLP all day long... but a certain obsessed Thumper has become desperate for attention 24/7, so whenever I'm away from GLP for any period of time no matter how short, I will probably have to disable the AC posting. SARS-CoV-2 variants from minks evade inhibition by antibodies

Summary: Immune responses in SARS-CoV-2 patients might provide only incomplete protection against SARS-CoV-2 variants from minks.

It has been known for about a year that minks can become infected with SARS-CoV-2. The virus had been transmitted from humans to farmed mink and mutated in infected animals. Mutations were acquired in the spike protein, which is crucial for the entry of the virus into host cells and represents the central point of attack for antibodies. These SARS-CoV-2 variants from mink were transmitted back to humans, raising concerns that minks could be a continuing source of infection of humans with SARS-CoV-2 variants with altered biological properties.

Researchers at the German Primate Center (DPZ) -- Leibniz Institute for Primate Research in Göttingen, Germany, have now shown that an antibody used for COVID-19 therapy is unable to effectively inhibit SARS-CoV-2 harboring a spike mutation acquired in minks. In addition, the mutation reduced the inhibition of the virus by antibodies produced in SARS-CoV-2 infected humans. These results show that SARS-CoV-2 can acquire mutations in minks that may reduce control of the virus by the human immune system

Both my parents, in their 70s, had their second pfizer jab last week. Zero side effects after first and second jabs. Aside from that, it does seem to me that, from stories I've heard/anecdotes both IRL and on the internet, there seems to be generally less risk of *known* side effects with Pfizer, compared the other technology of the J&J and AstraZeneca ones. Neither am I referring to the higher risk of blood clots in J&J/Astra, it just seems these particular vaccines have a noticeably higher risk of side effects. Of course this says nothing about the longer term effects of any of the vaccines which of course there is legitimate uncertainty about, but just passing on the info.

Does this mean it doesn’t work - I assume that’s what it means other wise he would have been positive about the vaccines.

Along similar lines to what I was thinking. Isn't the UK Gov usually quite keen to share positive news on the vaccine when they have some to share? The Indian mutant variant has been known for a fairly long time now, so you would have thought there would be some more info to share about it by now (if the news was good !)

Thanks for the kind words and green Larry D. Croc. Mrs Lago has fully recovered except for a lingering headache that is kept under control with Aleve blue pills. Hopefully, that too will dissipate.

You're right, herpes zoster is not the same as the STD herpes version, but I think whenever most people hear the word herpes they have in mind only one kind of herpes virus.

1.2 percent of vaccine patients had herpes zoster? That sounds pretty friggin high. For the lurkers, this means you might develop shingles as a side effect of the vax. (reactivation of a dormant herpes zoster virus).
