Re: What is the freaking deal with human longing?
Bible: Hell is now.
 Quoting: Levi 69624164

This is an interesting concept I've grappled with for quite a long time.

Does this mean I am already dead prior to entering this realm?

Is this hell eternal or is it a prison sentence?

Is it a purification process?

When Christ returns will He set us captives free?
 Quoting: Utmost Deplorable Publican.

if you took time to read the bible, it answers all the questions. there is no love here, it is temp, just around long enough to see it and know it is real. make it to heaven and you will find all you ever dreamed of and no this is not hell, far from it, hell is utter torment beyond words to describe it, fear the second death tho none do, none but the truly wise and there are only 144000 of them, fear GOD know peace and after death true joy...

In order to understand the human experience.

One must acknowledge the dash on a headstone,

this dash IS the human experience.

Remember, everything you love in life you will lose. Everything. Worldly desire is a dead end.

There is no way out, but there is one way home.
 Quoting: Lord of the Sheeple

You lie. You want everyone to despair and lose hope and think everyone is against them and people need to only look within and remain alone because everything else is fleeting, but to think like that is to be the true energy vampire, the true destroyer of faith and hope.

Love is never lost and never ends. You lie. Love is never lost.

Re: What is the freaking deal with human longing?
Life is such unutterable hell, solely because it is sometimes beautiful. If we could only be miserable all the time, if there could be no such things as love or beauty or faith or hope, if I could be absolutely certain that my love would never be returned: how much more simple life would be. One could plod through the Siberian salt mines of existence without being bothered about happiness. Unfortunately the happiness is there. There is always the chance (about eight hundred and fifty to one) that another heart will come to mine. I can't help hoping, and keeping faith, and loving beauty. Quite frequently I am not so miserable as it would be wise to be.” - T. H. White

Why do we crave that which will destroy us (e.g. as an addict)? Why do we long for that which we cannot have (e.g. unrequited love)? Why do we long to become a better version of ourselves but can’t ever reach satisfaction or a state of contentedness with who we are? Why is love, even self love, beyond the grasp of so many of us tortured souls?

Is this hell?

The Buddha says desire leads to suffering and that is all we do from the moment we enter this realm. Desire without cease. And even the Bible says desire leads to sin and sin leads to death. We sin because we desire. We die because we desire. We live only to desire and to desire more and more.

What a twisted web we weave as human beings.

Will we ever find enough?

Thanks to everyone who contributed to this thread.

I am officially now changing my GLP handle to Holy Duck after a friend of mine shared these commonly 'misheard' words to the song Hallelujah and apparently some people heard holy duck instead of holy dove but I love the thought of a holy duck.

I am not sure even the highest levels of Buddhists, including Buddha himself, ever truly finished explaining what the whole desire question was about.

They discovered that longing for material things brought suffering.

Desire is the state of wanting.

Wanting is not recognizing what is already here.

stay with me for a minute...

Wanting is a state of "lack."

Now we are all incarnate in a Plane of Duality.

SO - if we want something, we are not allowing ourselves to attain it. This is the key to all that secret stuff.

And it is one hell of a mind twist.

Appreciation is the key to unlocking the chains of wanting.

Meditate or think on that for a while.

Happiness is perception. And if you are far enough on your souls journey to be able to contemplate such things - then there is much to be grateful for.

We seek things, so they may "cause" us to feel something "good."

Where do the "good" feelings come from?

Do they come from the things?

the person?

The experience?

Can our "good" feelings exist without them?

Love is Eternal, and lasts through lifetimes.

Truth.

Our memories may not be there, as we are born. But if you run into someone you have loved before, you will "know" them.

Even if you just read their words.

Re: What is the freaking deal with human longing?
Now that we have briefly spoken of the darkness of desire - let us speak about the light side of it.

Nothing is created without it.

Nothing.

Desire may just have been what set the whole physical Cosmos into motion.

The Desire to Know Oneself.

So, longing created running water.

:-)

Longing knitted a blanket so someones children could be warm.

Longing made someone reach out to another person, and take a risk and now they are happily married.

Longing for purpose made someone become a doctor, who saved many lives.

Check out Pema Chodron, she is an author and Buddhist Nun. Lady has some wisdom.

I really like how she speaks about being ok with the full range of emotions we have as humans.

Being ok to sit with sadness, and anger and fear.

We would never appreciate things if we did not experience both sides.

I was sleeping peacefully. Then I was awakened by imaginary hope. Now I'm restless and can't go back to sleep.
