What is the freaking deal with human longing?
“Life is such unutterable hell, solely because it is sometimes beautiful. If we could only be miserable all the time, if there could be no such things as love or beauty or faith or hope, if I could be absolutely certain that my love would never be returned: how much more simple life would be. One could plod through the Siberian salt mines of existence without being bothered about happiness. Unfortunately the happiness is there. There is always the chance (about eight hundred and fifty to one) that another heart will come to mine. I can't help hoping, and keeping faith, and loving beauty. Quite frequently I am not so miserable as it would be wise to be.” - T. H. White

Why do we crave that which will destroy us (e.g. as an addict)? Why do we long for that which we cannot have (e.g. unrequited love)? Why do we long to become a better version of ourselves but can’t ever reach satisfaction or a state of contentedness with who we are? Why is love, even self love, beyond the grasp of so many of us tortured souls?

Is this hell?

The Buddha says desire leads to suffering and that is all we do from the moment we enter this realm. Desire without cease. And even the Bible says desire leads to sin and sin leads to death. We sin because we desire. We die because we desire. We live only to desire and to desire more and more.

What a twisted web we weave as human beings.

Will we ever find enough?

It seems so few of us can ever truly get any satisfaction.

May God bless those lucky few who find it.

More is better! They teach that to kids at a very young age. The vicious cycle must go on. It has always been the divine plan. Just like in all previous civilizations of time ours will be leveled and scattered.

Our birth is but a sleep and a forgetting:
The Soul that rises with us, our life's Star,
Hath had elsewhere its setting,
And cometh from afar:
Not in entire forgetfulness,
And not in utter nakedness,
But trailing clouds of glory do we come
From God, who is our home:
Heaven lies about us in our infancy!
Shades of the prison-house begin to close
Upon the growing Boy,
But he beholds the light, and whence it flows,
He sees it in his joy;
The Youth, who daily farther from the east
Must travel, still is Nature's priest,
And by the vision splendid
Is on his way attended; 75
At length the Man perceives it die away,
And fade into the light of common day.

Wonderful poem, reminded me of this song.

"When the end shines from the deep
and all the hate and all the hell
that history has released
will tremble before your valor
if you just get down on your knees
and promise to all your children true
that you will live in peace.
Where's the light to shine on me?
Oh send me something,
send me please.
Cleanse my body.
Close my eyes.
Naked and prepared to die.
In the starry atmosphere
when all the questions disappear.
And pressure with a salty taste,
exalts the tears that soak your face."

"Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his lifespan? And why do you worry about clothes? Consider how the lilies of the field grow: They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his glory was adorned like one of these.…"

Is desire not the cousin of worry?

Do we not desire and worry whether we shall obtain that which we desire?

Is this desire to improve not tinged with doubt and worry?

The worry that we are less than we could be.

The doubt that we are imperfect as we are.

More like rhetorical musing hoping to conjure up some late night discourse. What is the answer you are claiming I've already given?

Bible: Hell is now.
 Quoting: Levi 69624164

This is an interesting concept I've grappled with for quite a long time.

Does this mean I am already dead prior to entering this realm?

Is this hell eternal or is it a prison sentence?

Is it a purification process?

When Christ returns will He set us captives free?

I get it. Been suffering for years, basically all my "little" problems added up (headaches/migraines/various pain/discomfort/OCD/bad constpipation/depression/inability to feel "anthing" good). I'll feel shit for ages and finally get used to it and able to tolerate it enough to shrug it off and just "get on with things." Then BOOM as if by magic I'll randomly have a good day (for seemingly NO REASON) and just like that my tolerance resets and it'sack to suffering again.

I'm right there with you. I've been on antidepressants and antipsychotic medications for a while but I've since weaned myself off of them because although I didn't have as much negative self talk or negative thoughts going on; I didn't have much of anything going on. I was a blank slate. I feel everything far too deeply and that isn't necessarily a bad thing. I want to be able to feel, even if I must feel sorrow or pain or heartache. I want to learn to transmute these feelings into something more; not run from them and self medicate. But the more good we experience the more we crave the good times and become increasingly dissatisfied with the daily doldrums of existence. It almost makes me think there might be true reward in stoicism. In non-attachment to either good times or bad times but just to see them as times that come and go like the clouds in the sky.

I get that in some evolutionary sense, yes desire serves a purpose. Self preservation. Self betterment. etc.

But how much of desire is productive and how much of it is completely and utterly selfish and, more often than not, destructive.

So do Christians.

So do most religious.

Death is the end all be all ultimate reward.

Eternal life.

Nirvana.

Buddhahood.

Reunion with the Divine.

Dead to sin, Alive to Christ.

Self-annihilation.

Ego death.

It's all the same, just a different mask.

Um no, most religions desire eternal life, of infinite splendor and happiness. You desire eternal blackness and nothingness. You desire to extinguish your flame and to extinguish life.

Yes, eternal life through death.

Eternal life after this life is dead and gone.

Death is still a gate the religious or the adept must pass through.

Death is the final stage of initiation.
