I'm assuming they can't do this on other brands of router. Quoting: joe mamma However, I will piggyback others at will. cell phones towers will be obsolete in urban areas soon. just use an android or tablet and combine with skype, etc.... They can't do it with any router. The new wifi hotspots are a service, and a good one, no one can use your router without you knowing about it. Comcast has great internet, I just got boosted to 57mps, silly fast. But seperate wifi broadcasters are transmitting the public signal. So chill, OP. The "lock" is your email. If you are not a comcast customer, you can't get it, an internet customer that is. Comcast is the only place you can get 57mps, for a reasonable price, and rock solid reliable. Very fast and reliable. Today just surprised me. I read about this happening a while ago, just figured it wouldn't hit my router. I will now begin shopping for a router to buy. I rent one from Comcast now. I'll take the suggestions in this thread and buy one. Thanks for all your input. |

DSL service was horrible! but now, with U-verse, everything is great, getting my advertized speeds and have no problems at all after 3 months. Imagine that? BULLSHIT Quoting: rockhuff Comcast has turned my router into one of those public hotspots. Fuck that. IT WILL SUCK your bandwidth if you get some asshole freeloader hogging your signal. Won't count against your usage, but will slow YOUR PAID service down. I found a phone number that went DIRECTLY to a U.S. based Comcast Tech service person. No hold, no wait. The call took 5 minutes, I simply said that I wanted to opt-out of the free wifi on my router. The number is 855-308-9452. Good Luck!! This is why you buy your own router. Dont use the wifi on the modem, disable it. |

Dont use the wifi on the modem, disable it. Exactly what I did and they acted like I was crazy. I told them to shut off the modem/router WiFi. It was a pain in the ass, but they did it for me. Anonymous Coward User ID: 56584438 United States 07/24/2014 05:02 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | So let me get this straight. They are allowing THIER customers to log on to your routers wifi which is powered by and paid by your electric bills. Nice!! That almost sounds like theft of your electric service by Comcast. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 43394417 This does raise curious questions about liabilities. My router gets hot when im maxxing out it's range, what if there was a fire? I'm most curious to learn whether my non-comcast owned router, since it is comcast "approved", is also broadcasting for others. |

They don't have wifi but the people next door do. Their signal is locked and it has the same name as always but I noticed the xfinitywifi hotspot thing. I would have had to pay to access it though.
