Re: To all my fellow GLPer's with Comcast Xfinity internet!!
In addition to the unwanted XFINITI wifi I seemingly have a third such hotspot called CABLEWIFI -
now, that may very well be from another provider/subscriber,
but it's still annoying as it goes toward explaining the lack of parking around here sometimes.
I get why I see so many cars glowing blue at night - it's like I am subsidizing people's internet.
Thanks for thread - will look to disconnect asap

Re: To all my fellow GLPer's with Comcast Xfinity internet!!
I noticed yesterday that all of a sudden I had a new wifi signal in my house named, "xfinitywifi". BULLSHIT

Comcast has turned my router into one of those public hotspots. Fuck that. IT WILL SUCK your bandwidth if you get some asshole freeloader hogging your signal. Won't count against your usage, but will slow YOUR PAID service down. I found a phone number that went DIRECTLY to a U.S. based Comcast Tech service person. No hold, no wait. The call took 5 minutes, I simply said that I wanted to opt-out of the free wifi on my router. The number is 855-308-9452.

Good Luck!!

Hey Rock, It's not so bad really. I have tested this out for two months now and found out that my internet speed has almost doubled.

You won't see or even notice any drag on your end.

Since it's only for comcast customers who have an account to log into internet there won't be any freeloaders.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 57846917

But can I add users (friends, family, etc) to my account with their own email addresses and passwords who do not pay Comcast. Wouldn't those log-ins work.

it slows it just enough that you will never know it. if 10 or 15 people log on maybe, but doubt that will ever happen

there is a setting inside your admin comcast account that lets you enable that option. You can set up email accounts for your family and give them permission to log into hotspots. It's under family controls.

As a former ATT DSL sub. I feel for you, if yours works fine for you, that's great, they literally forced me to get U-verse internet.

They are phasing out DSL in favor of U-verse, that's what i was told on the phone when signing up.

DSL service was horrible!
but now, with U-verse, everything is great, getting my advertized speeds and have no problems at all after 3 months.

Imagine that?

They paid congress big bucks to be able to do this shit so get with the program!

Yes you can and its as easy as consulting a wifi topology map. You can use a program like "zenmap" to look at your wifi topology.

So... I'm a CMTS engineer and can answer all these questions for you guys.

There appears to be some serious misinformation here, and some valid concerns. On the other hand I'm not supposed to let you all know who I work for because I'm not authorized to speak on their behalf and I don't want to hijack the thread.

what you guys think? Should I start up and new AMA thread?

I can only imagine how many people get a good signal on this but are not paying Comcast, so they have a friend who does add them as a secondary email account so they can use it.

I have the xfinity WiFi on my modem and you need a Comcast username and password along with xfinity internet on the login account to access the xfinity WiFi at any location. Its something we should be able to disable on our own IMO.

Thank you for putting this up

Are you using the rented router and or modem/router combo? It's best not to use their crap for this reason.

I purchased my own Motorola Surfboard SB6141 modem and Asus N66W wireless router new from Amazon and do not have those issues.

Make sure to turn disable WPS as anyone tech geek can hack into your router.

WiFi is turned on by default for nearly every modem on the market due to the fact that nearly every user wants to connect wirelessly to the Internet. Otherwise, all of the comm companies would be getting inundated with calls asking how to turn on wireless.

Learn about the devices you use in your own home...and avoid jumping to conclusions without evidence.

The probably want you to upgrade because you modem is slowing down the rest of the mac domain.

Do you have a D3 modem or is it D2.0/D1.1 IF it's an older model it isn't bonding and your slowing down whatever CMTS upgrade they are doing.

105mbit downstream and soon to be 150. After they finish the D3.1 upgrade I'll be looking a Gbit speeds, while ATT is still trying to figure out vectoring.

25/5 from ATT cost $70 per month. 50/5 from Comcast cost $60. I fail to see your logic.

If $60 per month is half your income you probably should move out of the cardboard box and look for another job.

Anyone know how to test if you are having
your network hijacked by a phantom network?

I'm new in town and comcast xfinity is called
Comcastream and IP addresses work a bit differently

That's another story but - how to test this?

Need clarity on the Phantom network that you speak of but I'll try to help.

If you asking about another user surfing on your internet log into the router should be a 192.168 address just google it and you can see the MACs that have joined.

If you having problem with another network it's probably because the channels are over lapping. 1,6,11 are standard channels to use but people deviate from this without knowing what they are doing. see what channels they are using and give yourself some space by jumping to one of the other channels mentioned above.
