BULLSHIT Quoting: rockhuff Comcast has turned my router into one of those public hotspots. Fuck that. IT WILL SUCK your bandwidth if you get some asshole freeloader hogging your signal. Won't count against your usage, but will slow YOUR PAID service down. I found a phone number that went DIRECTLY to a U.S. based Comcast Tech service person. No hold, no wait. The call took 5 minutes, I simply said that I wanted to opt-out of the free wifi on my router. The number is 855-308-9452. Good Luck!! Don't feel out. It doesn't suck your bandwidth, and public traffic is kept separate from your traffic. This was announced about two months ago. |

But i think if you're rational about it, if everyones routers did this, and everyone is sharing their spare bandwidth, then no it would not slow your service down, realistically unless you get somebody downloading torrents and sitting outside your house doing it. You could of course cancelling your subscription, and then try using a tablet computer and suck off everyone elses wifi hotspots, to see if its viable as a freeloader. Also if everyone on their phones in a city or dense area, enabled wifi hotspot, then everyone could share their spare data, and it probably would end up being cheaper. They used mine well before 2 months ago. I discovered it myself, unplugged and it went away. Googled how to turn it off then reconnected and viola it was gone. Comcast is the only internet provider where I live except the slow version of DSL. I'm surrounded by apartments and I bet they all knew somebody who could give them a log-in if they did not already pay Comcast. I was never advised of this, one day they just turned it on. |

There's a few caveats to this and this has been going on for months now. First it doesn't count against your bandwidth usage at all. What they do is wall off a port from your router and make that the public WiFi and that traffic is monitored separately. HOWEVER, it is still using your router so there are two issues here, 1. If a lot of people are using your particular hotspot then it could slow yours down. 2. Security. It probably wouldn't take a total genius to bridge that port's gap onto your private service. And lastly, go get your own wifi router, they can't do it to your router, this only happens in WiFi routers they provide. Oh, there's an app you can get for your phone where it will show you a map with all the hotspots. RAGE |
