Anonymous Coward User ID: 59010695 United States 07/24/2014 11:00 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I noticed yesterday that all of a sudden I had a new wifi signal in my house named, "xfinitywifi". BULLSHIT Quoting: rockhuff Comcast has turned my router into one of those public hotspots. Fuck that. IT WILL SUCK your bandwidth if you get some asshole freeloader hogging your signal. Won't count against your usage, but will slow YOUR PAID service down. I found a phone number that went DIRECTLY to a U.S. based Comcast Tech service person. No hold, no wait. The call took 5 minutes, I simply said that I wanted to opt-out of the free wifi on my router. The number is 855-308-9452. Good Luck!! Log on to your router and turn it off. No harm, no foul. If you get a service person out and they turn it on, go back behind them, point your browser at your router, and turn it off. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 59804960 United States 07/24/2014 11:05 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | If you have one of these routers and don’t want to host a public Wi-Fi hotspot, here’s how to turn it off. • Log into your Comcast account page at customer.comcast.com. • Click on Users & Preferences. • Look for a heading on the page for “Service Address.” Below your address, click the link that reads “Manage Xfinity WiFi.” • Click the button for “Disable Xfinity Wifi Home Hotspot.” • Click Save. You can see screenshots of the process in the slideshow above. Note that this will only work once the hotspot is live on your router. Some other details about the hotspots: • Each hotspot actually contains separate connections for 2.4-GHz and 5-GHz Wi-Fi devices, and the Arris routers use the 802.11n standard. • If you have one of the Arris modem/router combos, but are using your own Wi-Fi router, the Arris device won’t broadcast the free hotspot. Likewise if you are using your own modem as well as your own router. • If you opt out of hosting a hotspot, you can still use others’ Xfinity Wi-Fi hotspots with your Comcast login. |

I'm assuming they can't do this on other brands of router. However, I will piggyback others at will. cell phones towers will be obsolete in urban areas soon. just use an android or tablet and combine with skype, etc.... |

They say this new internet will be 200x faster. Before, the only option was Hughesnet because we're in the middle of nowhere. It's satellite and it sucks. But something about this tells me that it's too good to be true. |

Yes! Same thing I had! Tech said you can disable it from your Comcast login, but most people couldn't find it on their website. No surprise there. I would just call, it literally took 5 minutes. Good Luck! |

User ID: 60100194 United States 07/24/2014 11:30 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | yesterday morning, i jumped on my droid and opened up kindle to read my book while waiting for coffee to finish. all of a sudden, this comcast connection page showed up on my phone... wtf? thought i had installed an app that was a commercial app so, i began to delete all recently installed apps. happened again. ran the virus protection on the phone, all came back fine and boom, happened again. went to my main computer to search this page and none of my bookmarks worked. internet was down. pinged comcast dot net and was connected but pages still wont load. then, all of a sudden, the same comcast page that was loading on my phone, loaded in every bookmark i tried. freaked out; ran all my virus protection shit thinking that i accidentally clicked something and installed something bad. after all that, tried google and back to the comcast. even my GLP bookmark turned into the comcast page. so, i backed up everything on my hdd and decided to go along with this comcast thing, thinking ill just do a reinstall and apparently, thread is what was happening. funny thing: 3 days ago i was looking over my comcast bill and thought it was too freaking high. $76. a month is wtf? looked at my bill and they were charging me $10 a month to rent me my own modem. they charged my for my own modem since January. when i called them, they said my modem was old and that i should upgrade. assholes. !!! |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 29664805 United States 07/24/2014 11:33 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Comcast Xfinity installed a WiFi modem/router at my house. I handle all WiFi through my own router for security and convenience reasons, so I wanted Xfinity's WiFi disabled. After several unsuccessful attempts to disable myself, I called and asked them to disable it. They asked if I was sure that I wanted it disabled, and I assured them of my certainty. Three days later, it was back on, so I called them again. This process repeated. Finally, they sent out a tech who swapped their router out for a simple modem with no WiFi support. I've been a satisfied customer since getting the simple cable modem. |

I have tested this out for two months now and found out that my internet speed has almost doubled. You won't see or even notice any drag on your end. Since it's only for comcast customers who have an account to log into internet there won't be any freeloaders. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 6858912 It happened to me, turn off your router and check on your phone or tablet and see what networks are available if it is gone it is your router. Also if the signal is super strong chances are it is you. This thing is evil, you pay them and have to find out and disable it. You should be able to opt-in for compensation, but be automatically opted-out until you decide to opt-in. |
