OP not sure why my reply did not go through but here goes. Women have always had jobs. It was only a brief time period after WW2 where it was less common.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 77978086

That's not true. If women had jobs, they worked in the home so they could also look after the kids. They did NOT go out to work when they had small children unless they were widows or had no other means of support. Jobs outside the home, where there were small children, WERE THE EXCEPTION. I'm old enough to remember this.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 73724632

You are remembering a time period where women working was less common. During WW2 and before that women regularly worked outside the home. Do you have memories prior to WW2? I doubt it. Not all women but a good portion worked outside the home. More well to do women did have have to but a good many did and during WW2 it was a necessity to keep the economy going. You need to look beyond your own limited history
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 77978086

And how old are YOU to be lecturing me? What do YOU know of it? It's not only my experience but that of my parents who both grew up in the Depression - my father well before that, and my grandparents and all the other elderly people around me. I am telling you WOMEN DID NOT GENERALLY WORK OUTSIDE THE HOME. It was considered embarrassing because it meant your husband was a LOSER who could not support you. Yes, during WW2 itself women worked outside but that was because the men were at war, of course. Before that women who had small children DID NOT WORK OUTSIDE THE HOME as a rule.

You literally don't know what you're talking about.

I have never met one woman who has ever said she was to blame for her broken marriages or relationships. Never once.

 Quoting: SentientTransient

I am 50% responsible for divorcing my 1st husband. I was 50% responsible for him smoking crack, losing his job and hitting me before our daughter was less than a year old. I am 50% responsible because I didn't think his choice to smoke crack had anything to do with all the work I had done to get him thru undergrad and grad school were worth sticking around.

Only 50% though.
 Quoting: pool

I’m sorry you had to go thru all that :(

You are not responsible for his bad decisions and choices. That was his choice alone.

But I get that you were being sarcastic in your comment to SentientTransient.
 Quoting: Very Interesting

The point of not being an apologist for men by taking the blame and putting it on women is important.

Blame deflecting is a defense mechanism. Used in war also as a tactic against the enemy. So there's a fine line when it comes to taking responsibility for behavior patterns.

Patriarchal society isn't natural. There has to be balance or the birthing rights of women are infringed. So if the man wants to be in charge then they ALL have to act accordingly and be responsible for the majority of the work load.

Once that broke down in the 1970's then women were forced to work. The key difference between patriarchy and feminism is their treatment of women; in patriarchy, women face oppression and discrimination whereas, in feminism, women have equal rights to men. Patriarchy is a system of society or government in which men hold power and women are largely excluded from it.

So men weren't willing to give up their dominance and wanted their cake too. However, if we place the blame on women then men get their cake too. See how that works?

That's what you get when you dont appreciate women for their work and sacrifice as mothers for HUNDREDS if not THOUSANDS of YEARS. Ancient people worshipped motherhood and the three goddesses (mother, grandmother and virgin/daughter). The worship of three goddesses was eventually turned into the worship of "three kings". Youre surprised women left home to work outside? Well, they were treated as servants for far too long and that's the result. In the region I live in graves of female warriors have been found. So you see, even some 1700 years ago women here were "working outside home".

You also have to understand that most of us that I grew up with came from farming backgrounds (no matter where we came from) and that shaped our thinking. In those farming communities, the home/farm was the center of life and people did everything (as much as possible) on the farm. City life of course was different but people still brought their farm based morays with them.

One of it's nefarious intentions was to get more women into the workforce- flooding it with more people- and bring down wages, salaries, etc. and it worked. Now, because of that and other policy factors it is very difficult for many men to support a wife and children alone.

Yep. Industrialization and WWI WWII changed things.

NOW as we come up on WWIII it's going to be much worse and women will not be able to raise children. There will be MANY orphans, many desperate women, many disabled men, many deaths.

And what will women do? All the work, as usual.

Well I guess your family was better off than a lot of families. Not every family had the luxury of having a woman stay home. Most people lived day to day trying to get by and everyone needed to contribute. You might want to look into some of the child labor statistics during the 1800s and early 1900s not to mention the working conditions for both children and women during that time period

correlation isn't causation.

however

recognizing the fact that this is part of the non-normal-ness is important

stay-at-homes can really make family life nice for all

a strong home life is a basis for society.

I see it a little differently

America was so strong that we created 50% MORE jobs in the workplace. That's a strong economy. That's America.

However, then the vultures came in, the Federal Reserve and took all that labor power and turned it into loans. Loans is what our current economic system is based on. So all women's efforts and hard labor and long hours in the workforce resulted in ... someone oppressing them in different ways, now as a borrower and holder of debt.

It's funny how the generations born since the end of World War II want to change anything that's been the tried and true formula in society for thousands of years.

Starting with the biggest feminist lie of all which is that one woman can do everything- that a woman can have a successful career and raise a happy successful family. Some women can, but not everyone can handle the burden. They either end up doing a mediocre job, or they raised mediocre children. Kids that have been dumped in daycare since they were two months old aren't being raised by their parents. They're being raised by the daycare.

I've had good bosses of both genders. But all of the absolutely terrible, completely unreasonable just batty bosses I've had, have been women. So what do we have now? Look at the world leaders: Pelosi, Harris, Maxine, Merkel.... A leaking canoe full of bad bosses!

Yeah like the song says,, "where have all the cowboys gone? Turning into a bunch of baristas with hair buns I guess.

I'm a woman by the way. Older than dirt. I worked before my daughter was born, I stayed home until she was in high school.

You are so right.

Taking care of a home and children, when done correctly is a lot of work.

Women these days are exhausted and dissatisfied in many ways. I believe a lot of divorce stems from one partner being stuck with the brunt of the housework and child rearing, while holding down a full-time job.

Few of you seem to have a real, organic understanding of the balance of the roles of men and women in the past. Men worked to bring in the bulk of the money and survival needs, and also protected the family and were the chief decision makers. Every ship needs ONE captain. Women advised their husbands (mine calls it nagging :). Women stayed at home and raised and taught the kids. By teaching I do mean academic things (my mother taught me to read) but mainly moral things, religion, how to behave with others, the history of your family, how to cook or sew - practical skills, etiquette, etc. Those things are not effectively - or at all - taught in nursery schools or day care. Women also cared for the sick, the elderly, and for people in the neighborhood and always knew what was going on and looked out for each other. They knew what was going on and a lot of things could be nipped in the bud if someone was falling into trouble. Now everyone is busy, or scared of each other, or just don't care.

Those old roles worked and we don't have a replacement for them. All we have is the GOVERNMENT and that sure as HELL doesn't work!

Right.

Before the 1970's most households were multigenerational. So there were those who checked responsibility.

When households became single family that's when the deviant behavior started. And dirty little secrets could be secret, like porn, and affairs, and drug indulgence, and sex all the time, and neglect of children.

So still blaming women?
Way too awake, maybe not

Technology, led by electricity in the homes, changed everything.

Moving Pictures gave people a different view of things, not found in their small towns.

Electricity led to easier work in the factories, allowing women to become factory workers.

Women worked away from home, and the home life was destroyed.

How can you stop the march of technology, in order to protect the natural roles of men and women?

I was not yet born at that time, so thanks for the insight. It does seem like some sort of financial strategy- more people in debt planned for down the road explains it. It seems to have gone from families being able to afford "nicer things", a large savings account, etc. because the woman worked outside the home to most women having to work to just have a lower middle class-middle class life.
