Nope, I've lived in the real estate business my entire life. I've seen the ups and downs, and right now its doing pretty damn good. And the economy is a hell of a lot better than it was 3 years ago.

Look for gov. owned property, it usually less and you may find something in you price tag, so to speak. One thing I have also told people who have money find land or a house to buy, if not for living in, then rent it out.

You may still be able to buy one.

Back in 1980 my wife and I bought a 1400 sq ft home, modest home, for $44,500.

We were scared to death committing to that expenditure.

We paid our bills early and now have no debt.

We understand how lucky we are.

Our 30 something kids can't get rent anywhere near what we started paying to own.

That's the real problem as far as I'm concerned. The young people just starting out can barely rent let alone buy, but very few seem to be bothered by that.

My $450 apartment in 1999 is now renting for $1250.

Rental price in 2012 was $1280 (CAD), and now today is $1950 (CAD).

Maybe we need to change our expectations of how our children acquire homes. There was a time when family land would have been provided for many in this country. Instead of boomers telling our children, "we did it in our own" maybe we need to recognize that wealth is built over multiple generations. Seek financial guidance, set up trusts for grandchildren instead of taking them to Disney or buying them expensive electronics. Use what you have been able to achieve to give them a hand up & make sure they know how to effectively manage it & instill an obligation in them to do the same for future generations.

I agree! This home will be left to the kids. We've thought about selling and buying more land and less house, but they would inherit that too. I'm also looking into buying some land for them. We live in an area where not everyone has lost their mind and you can find a deal. We're not rich, just comfortable.
Their dad (my ex) has 21 acres for them. Sometimes he says they can have it now to build homes on and sometimes he says they have to wait. He's strange so I don't know.
I feel like if we, the parents, can't get something together for them they're going to have a rough time for a long time. I want to do something for them now, not wait for them to inherit.
The shame of it is that they all work full time jobs (and my eldest teaches music on the side) and are trying to save. They all have kids. They all rent and pay their bills on time, but can't save as much as they'd like. If they're living beyond their means I don't see it and they all refuse to have credit cards so they're not in debt. They just have so little left over after bills.
