Quoting: Anonymous Coward 80545541 I figure that I will pitch in and give some advice. Caffeine, caffeine, caffeine. Most of us have become caffeine junkies and will be going through withdrawal when TSHTF. I am stocking up on coffee and tea but there is a shelf life issue. That is why I have started hoarding caffeine pills. Cheap and the shelf life is years. Do yourself a favor and don't go through withdrawal as you are living your 18th century lifestyle. Fetching water from the lake with a headache and nausea is no way to live. Plus, the barter value for caffeine will be off the charts. Terrific advice - thank you for pitching in! Keep reading - so much remarkable information and help in this thread - very bright people are engaged here, including you! Quoting: Anonymous Coward 80573351 I figure alot of my meals will be beans mixed with a grain (rice or pasta). But with no refrigeration it's going to take lots of small meals being cooked...but beans need around a 6 hour soak time. I'll have to start soaking a half a cup of beans right before I go to bed so I can have some breakfast...and start soaking a half a cup of beans at breakfast time so I can have some dinner. I better buy a few more tiny pots with lids. No refrigeration would really suck! - MC "Cook" your beans, rice, etc., overnight by placing them in a stainless steel thermos, fill with boiling water, wrap in blanket or heavy towel. By breakfast they are ready to eat. Same all the time. The same with cooking oatmeal - hot or cold as you prefer - soak or "cook" overnight. Stock up on a few stainless steel thermoses - found mine at an estate sale inexpensively. Only fuel usage is to heat the water. Quoting: Lowkey Cyberpunk I know where my septic tank is, in a grid down situation I could dig it and remove the cover. If I build an outhouse on top of that hole and provide a gallon of water for every trip, would that be acceptable or would it reek of night manure? Would it be better to just dig another hole in the woods and do the outhouse like it's been done forever? Questioning minds and all that. For the record, I've done outhouses before and am prepared for that. Dear wife isn't. Edit: on further thought, if I have the water I could just keep using my current facilities. But the question still remains. Excellent questions! Hope I see the answers between here and the end of current comments! I don't believe pouring water into current facilities would be helpful, as the city/county sewage facilities will stop working and back up. Might work well with private septic tank. Would recommend trying now with the septic tank - don't flush for a few days, just pour water each time of use and see if it lasts a minimum of three or four days, going down where it should. Use dishwater, bathing water, any gray water you have rather than good drinking/cooking water. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 80039739 For long term storage Freeze dried instant I probably got 20 LBs on hand. I am good for a few years and will cut back if shtf. Anyone know how long the shelf life is on it? I think the open one I use sometimes is from the 1990s Tabaco I roll my own 75 cents a pack my powermatic3 has stuffed 21k plus tube's still going great I keep 20+ bags 1LBs each natural long cut, Just finished 2018 bags still fresh. I've read that instant coffee lasts far longer than ground or perhaps even than whole beans - not sure on that. I've purchased a couple large jars instant, for safety's sake. We would be miserable, us addicted to caffeine, without it. Regarding smoking materials, consider using the electronic version, with extra parts on hand and extra bottles of either salts or the usual liquids. Better not to have flavors - odors will travel far to the hungry. Much easier to keep on hand. Have some cigarets for barter but never let the barterer see a whole pack. These should charge easily with the solar charger you have to charge your cellphone, etc. We will be calmer and thus safer as smokers if we have some form of reliable nicotine. Thank you to those who have pinned this thread, which can be and probably is life-saving to some. Huge thank you to whomever upgraded me for this month - what a thoughful thing to do! You are very much appreciated, and I would like to thank you personally if you would be so kind as to reveal your identity! I'm still fighting the inability to stand and walk, and the lack of energy of being ill, so I don't always come to this thread. Know that I am thinking about all of you, all the work that is put into this thread by all of you, and the wisdom so readily available here, as well as the honesty of the questions. I'll try to remember to put my posts and answers in blue so those who don't wish to read what I say can avoid me, and those who do wish to can find me easily. LOL Some of the people I follow now believe that S will HtF in multiple ways at one time, rather than only one event at a time. Maybe it's best to have it all come at once, especially if in summer so we can become accustomed to the new ways of doing things before cold, wet weather hits most of us. If it's true that whatever "they" do a "test" on happens in reality in two months or less, we can expect internet outage and even grid down this summer. Imagine us without internet! Horror of horrors!
