Bulk flour, rice and oil at costco or sams club

buy 50 to 100 lb bags for very cheap.

Just the basics but you will survive
 Quoting: Jake

Nice! Maybe a bag of beans, too? Rice and beans together make a complete protein.

On a video earlier they pointed out how easy to make tortillas with a little flour and oil.
 Quoting: Pooka

Imagine having to survive on a diet of nothing but flour and rice (and oil) for weeks or months?

IMpossible. Nobody resists in the long run to something like that, if only psychologically and even on the physical level you will not stay healthy very long.

Tortillas? lol!

Nice, but only for a short time, particularly if you have nothing else.

Nowadays, milk in cartons keeps for a year I think, so why wouldn't you stock up on milk?

There is so much more one can do.

I'm as prepared as one can get, a few years of patriot supply, off grid solar, a well, a water tank, a big berkey filter, a katadyn filter, lifestraws, a stream .3 miles away. Situated in a very rural location. My back yard ends and a 100 miles of forest begins, today there were 9 deer in the yard, But my number one prep is Trust God and prayer.

Best bets to survive long term for cheap:

-Trustworthy multivitamins
-Berkey water filters and lots of replacement filters
-Tons of beans
-Tons of rice
-Grow as many potatoes as possible
-Spare phones and memory cards in an EMP proof galvanized steel garbage can (aluminium tape where air can get in)
-Solar chargers and solar lights
-Water butt for rain water
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 82443040

If you have a well, a quality hand pump is honestly worth the investment but they are not cheap.

Understood. I have a shallow well. If you don't have a shallow well don't get a hand pump. Get a solar array or turbine that powers a pump.

Thanks for the correction.

Actually, consider re-digging a well...an artesian or do a shallow if possible.

It may be worth your effort in these times!

This works. Shooting a bullet in your well, dry ice, even steadily pumping it, doesn't work.

Sulfamic and a bubbler for a week.

18 pack of washcloths from Walmart cost $4, will replace hundreds of rolls of paper towels.

I swear by this. I have two bins under the sink. One hangs on the cabinet door (the plastic kind made to store used plastic bags) and a bucket for the dirty ones. Just wash and reuse.

For those with no way to dig a well, just make sure you have activated charcoal and a bag of sand on hand. You can make a rudimentary filter out of any vessel that holds water.

Another thing to remember is to have a hard copy of everything. Relying on that instruction on how to make something saved to your computer or phone may not be there when TSHTF. Copy everything onto paper or have books that have the info you need. I even copy extra recipes I might need into the inside covers if my cookbooks. You'd be suprised how much we take for granted the stores to supply us with the most basic foods. You never know when you'll get a hankering for mayo or italian dressing. Make sure you have it written down somewhere. Google won't be there when you need it most.

If you have not got some food insurance time is very short!
And the price has gone up 80% from last year!

Store bought I just got some more coffee oil beans rice and flour 25 LBs bags it is cheapest way and I think we are going to be eating it very soon!

From LDS email this morning!

Now, effective immediately: due to a surge in demand, each transaction will be limited to quantities as found in our one-year supply recommendations - per customer per month.

You can find these quantities at: [link to brightspotcdn.byu.edu (secure)] . Please note that on this sheet it suggests saving 24 cans of wheat. Unfortunately, at this time we can only supply you with 12 cans of wheat and you can substitute the other 12 cans with white flour.
Depending on shipment and inventory, these amounts can change without notice, so please email before coming down to check if what you would like to purchase is something we have in stock. At this time, Sylmar Home Storage Center can no longer support selling bulk quantities. If you would like to purchase bulk items, you may do so online at www.providentliving.org.

Battery stuff.
I like battery recyclers, when I find one I can trust.
I prefer deep cycle batteries, too.

There are people who sell "seconds" or "blem" batteries.

I bought a 650 CCA for $30 just 2 years ago for a car I was gonna sell.

Worked fine. They just don't test right within their parameters.

Voltage might be too high or not quite enough amps

They do not have any stickers on them as to what company produced them.

Judging by the colors the one I bought was prolly a Wonch.

It worked at least long enough to find a new owner
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 82604007

A deep cycle (DC) battery will cost less and last longer with the ability to take long periods of un-use.

It have less cranking amps, but will still be adequate.

I put in the largest ones that will fit.

Good suggestion from Ms LJS

well,....as a retired chef with 25+ years in the biz, I can say that a lot of you are paying WAY too much for your foods

don't buy things like beans, grains, rice, spices, etc from stores like wallyworld, or online on sites like amazon

go to local foreign foods markets, they're way cheaper

you're welcome
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 80952591

Yep.

I hit the Asian store for beans, rice, lentils and spices.

Also start making sour dough. Research it and you will see it is easy.
Here is a recipe using all purpose flour, most call for whole wheat flour.

Flour that is vacuum sealed will last at least 10 years.

Paper lunch sack, mark with best by date, date you are sealing and how many cups, I do 9 cups.

Fill with flour, fold over and tape shut. Put in freezer for a week (kills the buggies and their eggs), then thaw overnight. Vacuum seal so that info on the sack is showing through.

Store in a cool dark place. You can put in buckets or totes to keep rodents out.

So...without an active mod who encourages chatter this thread goes...? It's too long for it to be pinned anymore without it actively being regularly watered, fed and nurtured. Anyhow bump. I asked a mod about locking it (like the first Qanon, its on thread is) so that someone can use the same title as a Part 2 but where is Pooka? Last I heard from her she was worried about 'my preps' lol...Permaculture is a toolkit anyone can carry anywhere and immediately correct a s faulty system and make it cheaper, easier, and more efficient. I'm not worried about me Pooka, if you are reading this.

But this is a vital, and Classic, GLP thread. A part 2 (to make it pinnable) would be awesome. Anyone want to start one?

Free tarps?

How can this be true?

When I go to my local hardware store / lumber yard, if I buy wood or concrete materials, I always ask if I can get some of the plastic sheeting out of the dumpster "to cover my load. Or I tell them I need it to protect the material when I get home.

This is the fiber reinforced, plastic sheeting that covers the plywood and stuff when it is shipped.

They usually let me take it.

I have been known to take more than one.

This is what I use to cover my firewood and stuff.

Not to say that I am above buying a tarp or two, but free is an excellent price.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 47519179

Yep, do that too, but the wood people here are moving away from single use plastic sheeting and are using 5x2 thin plywood sheets to protect their timber during shipping. This is thrown out when the loads are unpacked and it's very handy stuff. We make all kinds of stuff from it. Use your imagination.hf

Forgot to add, many timber merchants have lots of waste that they pay to dispose of. If you are reliable, they might let you go through their skips and take what you want. They benefit by saving a couple of loads a year going to the dump, which equates to £££££. It's a win-win.
