On a video earlier they pointed out how easy to make tortillas with a little flour and oil. Imagine having to survive on a diet of nothing but flour and rice (and oil) for weeks or months? IMpossible. Nobody resists in the long run to something like that, if only psychologically and even on the physical level you will not stay healthy very long. Tortillas? lol! Nice, but only for a short time, particularly if you have nothing else. Nowadays, milk in cartons keeps for a year I think, so why wouldn't you stock up on milk? There is so much more one can do. |

They don't have to be pretty, just clean and functional, anything you can get. I am in the desert, on the edge of a city and on city water. I have water stored in the garage and have a portable 250g spa. But, what if it is 3 years? Both neighbors have pools, next time me...I have firearms, they don't....but hoping some protection and all the extra beans and rice I have will be a good exchange. I have been investigating finding natural leaks out of the mountains but haven't gone and filled up some large bottles, yet. I am thinking I need to get on that, NOW. Also, the main reason for my post. Most of the large cities in the desert areas didn't form until refrigeration and then they grew when air conditioning was invented. Prior to that, they hung up wet sheets around them or even slept outside, up, off the ground, wrapped in a sheet. I can't imagine surviving a week of 125 degree weather, though. I'd make the 90 mile trek to the ocean but would never leave my home and food supplies...and LA would be a shit storm without power. In two housing locations when the power went out so did the water pump, so there was no water to flush toilets, shower, cook, etc. So we always kept a few 5 gallon water bottles filled, a porta potty / lugaloo. Anonymous Coward User ID: 75492300 United States 03/12/2022 09:53 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I'll add a bit to this. People tend to forget that communities, towns, cities, etc were built off of trade/bartering. You do not have to have EVERYTHING as it becomes overwhelming. Have your basics to start and trade for others. Example, I have nowhere to keep chickens, cattle, etc... but I am very skilled at securing fish, lobster, etc out my back door. Get the picture? Know how to secure protein. For some that is fishing, others hunting, other farming chicken, goats, beef. Then you need veggies... canned? grow your own? barter? You'll figure it out. 1 - Have comfort that you have started some sort of preparations... Get started if you haven't. Start with 3 days/2 weeks/1 month... in that order. (only preppers will be left after 1 month). 2 - WATER... you'll need it and need to filter/purify it. LEARN. 3 - SHELTER... Look around, You are most likely in a shelter now. Stay there. 4 - PROTECTION... Don't be the guy that gets rolled up. 5 - COMMUNITY - ie: don't be a dick. 6 -IMPORTANT: - HAVE A SERVICE YOU PROVIDE! Need help if you have nothing? Invest $400 in sharpening supplies... now you have a sharping service for shears, knives, axes, etc. Buy a book on Blacksmithing... melting scrap into ingots... (right there I just made you one of the most valuable people in a civil society). Gotta a tractor or a plow mule? Soil prep is a business... Figure it out. It will be more valuable than money. And as a last bit of info... I see people all geeked up of their IFAK... great. My question is, If something happens so bad that you need your IFAK, where are the backup supplies you'll need for the next month to heal up without getting infection? Don't have a month's worth, how about two weeks?... Don't have that? What about 72 hrs?... oh, you only have an immediate kit (ie: IFAK). Hope no-one else got injured. Doctors, nurses... this is where YOUR SERVICE and supplies come in handy. STOCK THE "F" UP! for what service you provide. |

Anti diarrhea, pepto bismal, calamine lotion, cold medicine, etc, etc, etc... SEEDS! Heirloom Seeds! you can barter and trade as they will be the new currency! Basically this collects the first couple of gallons off your roof, (which can be pretty dirty)and allows cleaner water into your tank. There are plenty of vids on utube on how to do this and it's easy to do. My first attempt at collecting water had no such protection and one day I discovered a very dead, very bloated, two foot long lizard submerged in the tank. Incidentally, I use agricultural grade irrigation pipework. It's cheap and tough as old boots. |

I live in the UP of Michigan, not a hot place, but this would help both in Winter and Summer. Extending shelf life just a little in the Summer is a big help. Not often considered, is how nice it is to keep things from freezing hard in the Winter. If you're chopping your own firewood, you don't want to burn it unless you have to, and you need to be able to cope if you run out (happened to me once). I really only heat the place when it's single digits (40x8 shipping container, 320 sqft). I'll just use a small buddy heater to warm my hands most days. It sucks to have all your buckets of water freeze, and you may have some items you want to protect from the harshest cold. Especially if you have to leave for a few days. Start digging.
