One of the most interesting aspects of the story in Eyes Wide Shut (19991 is that the relationship of Bill and Alice nearly falls apart over sexual jealousy despite the fact that neither of them ever actually cheats on the other. Instead, they are driven apart by mere suggestions, possibilities, and even dreams.

It was released on my 7th bday.

I had not seen Eyes Wide Shut since it came out and with the passing of Stanley Kubrick prior to its release and being a huge fan of his work, I was one of the first in line to see it. Upon leaving the theater, I remember my gut reaction was: He did not finish this film! I felt that way because, being an editor myself, I noticed flaws in the editing and Kubrick films are always absolutely perfect.

After reading this thread I watched the digital 2:40 "uncut" version and being a lifelong fan of Kubrick's visual storytelling and full-circle symbolism I enjoyed noticing all the ideas pointed out in this thread.

But I also took a few notes and my conclusion is:

Kubrick either died before completing the editing, or someone performed a hatchet job on the film as there are numerous edits he would never make. Not in a million years!

7:34 - 180 degree cut - after Szavost drinks Alice's champagne.

1:04:20 - unnecessary dissolve - Milich agrees to rent Bill the costume.

1:06:20 - 180 degree cut - Milich is asking Bill about his bald spot.

1:18:54 - 180 degree cut - Amanda tells Bill "you're in great danger".

1:32:55 - medium wide to medium close (no angle shift) - Bill asks Alice "what were you dreaming"?

1:35:43 - medium close to medium wide (no angle shift) - Alice tells Bill "He just laughed at me".

These are editing mistakes Kubrick would never make...He would never have to let a bad edit remain in one of his films not with all the angles and takes he would shoot.

These questions alone are to some the most terrifying of all.

Theatrical poster has Kubrick, Cruise , and Kidman listed the in the exact same size, in a line, and shaped as an uncapped pyramid. I could not find another example of a director using this style on the poster. Is Kubrick himself one of the characters in the film?

The mirror shows Cruise & Kidman's faces so close together that they vaguely appear like the Rubin's vase optical illusion, also known as the "goblet figure" illusion. Although this would be a "One-Eyed Jack" version as TC's eye is drooping like he has stroke face. Is Kubrick's character the Knight of Cups in tarot? Or more the Knave of Hearts from Alice in Wonderland?

Lastly the 3 Names, the title, and release date are all in the same font, capped, and nearly the same point. Thanks OP for your blurting or I'd never have seen this. So July 16th is spelled out bigger than I've ever seen a release date on a poster.

This guy is basically claiming there is an entire different film playing while we're distracted by the one with Bill & Alice, though they may be characters in this other one as well. I'm not seeing what he's trying to point out in the stills, other than the 3D effect, but it would make sense to us as an audience of EYES WIDE SHUT. Hmm...

Also, on a thread about cutting 28 minutes from the film, I've heard that one of those scenes involved Alice's Monarch/MK-Ultra episodes with her handler. Wish we could see them!

LASTLY-- something like 90% or more of the actors are (or were doing shooting) Scientologists, which I think is most spooky.

I'm not fluent in symbolism, and don't know much about spotting hidden images and all that, but I did notice something. It looks to me like nothing, but I know everyone says Kubrick was an obsessive genius, and meticulous about every scene, and with that in mind... @02:05:50, when Cruz is reading the paper. One line in each of the 3 paragraphs about the dead beauty queen is repeated, then the article continues. Looks like a simple printing mistake to me, but it stuck out right away when I paused to read the article, and if I saw it, surely Kubrick knew it is there. Thought maybe all 3 made a sentence, but no real coherency when put together. Regarding the 28 min. that were cut, my guess is child porn/sacrifice maybe?

I think that Alice was crying because in the past she might have been a participant in the so-called parties. She has nightmares about having sex with all these men whom she didn’t even know – and of course she couldn’t know them, since they all wore masks!

In the first scene of the movie, with Alice undressing and dropping her black dress to the floor, is almost exactly like the beginning of orgy scene, when the women let their black cloaks fall. Her body, seen nude from the back, is practically indistinguishable from the women at the orgy. Is this a hint that she participated in such ‘events’ in the past? How long ago?

It also seems to me that Alice recognized Nick when Bill pointed him out to her. She kept staring at him as she continued to dance with Bill and made some absentminded comment about his playing well for a doctor. As soon as Bill suggested that they walk over to say hello, there was an almost panicked look in her eyes and she told Bill that she desperately needed to use the bathroom. She was certainly in a big hurry to get away. Still, supposedly on her way to the bathroom, she chugged down a glass of champagne, not something that someone in such great need to urinate would be likely to do.

(While she leaves the room where the dancing is, as she goes through the door, there is the very interesting change of the woman with the gray haired man. The woman wears a wine colored dress and has long hair before she goes through the door. When she emerges on the other side, she is wearing a black double-breasted skirt suit and has short hair. In fact, she is not the same woman at all, although she is still with the same grey haired man. I don’t think this is shape shifting – more an indication of duplicity and double lives that we will see several people live from this point in the film.)

Back to Alice and Nick, I think it is likely that she used to participate in parties such as the one that Bill attends later that night, and possibly she remembered Nick playing the piano there. This also explains why, at the Sonata Café, Kubrick would include the seemingly mundane dialogue between Bill and Nick about Bill being married for nine years - to establish a plausible timeframe. Nick dropped out of medical school ten years earlier – maybe he was recruited??? Their paths could have crossed. Was Alice afraid of being recognized by Nick?


I also found it curious, when she was dancing with Szandor, that she made such a big deal about being married. Was her marriage to Bill her way out of that dark world? We are not told how she and Bill met. She doesn’t seem very happy in her marriage, but she and Bill have achieved a certain status, both social and financial and a level of normalcy and respectability in their lives. But she is still clearly traumatized by her past and it haunts her in her nightmares.

And the mask – why did she put it in bed on Bill’s pillow? It would be more logical to ask him about it, if she had accidentally found it. It is an ordinary enough mask. But it clearly means something else to her.

I was intrigued by the suggestion that I read somewhere (I think here, but I don’t remember the name of the thread, sorry) that Alice was still a participant in these parties, and indeed, Bill leaves the apartment after receiving word that one of his patients has died. One may even stretch the argument and suggest that patient was killed (remember the daughter’s shock at her father’s death, saying that he was having a really good day), and, of course, Domino could have easily been planted - all this done to keep Bill away from his apartment. What ruins this theory for me is that Alice calls him from their apartment and wants to know when he’ll be coming home. I think that she is no longer involved in that world, except when it comes back to her in her nightmares.
