If we assume that he told the truth, how do we know why Alice is crying?

Why was Alice crying after she heard about the party?

I'll be hoping for some good replies then I'll take a shot at it.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 60532897

I think that Alice was crying because in the past she might have been a participant in the so-called parties. She has nightmares about having sex with all these men whom she didn’t even know – and of course she couldn’t know them, since they all wore masks!

In the first scene of the movie, with Alice undressing and dropping her black dress to the floor, is almost exactly like the beginning of orgy scene, when the women let their black cloaks fall. Her body, seen nude from the back, is practically indistinguishable from the women at the orgy. Is this a hint that she participated in such ‘events’ in the past? How long ago?

It also seems to me that Alice recognized Nick when Bill pointed him out to her. She kept staring at him as she continued to dance with Bill and made some absentminded comment about his playing well for a doctor. As soon as Bill suggested that they walk over to say hello, there was an almost panicked look in her eyes and she told Bill that she desperately needed to use the bathroom. She was certainly in a big hurry to get away. Still, supposedly on her way to the bathroom, she chugged down a glass of champagne, not something that someone in such great need to urinate would be likely to do.

(While she leaves the room where the dancing is, as she goes through the door, there is the very interesting change of the woman with the gray haired man. The woman wears a wine colored dress and has long hair before she goes through the door. When she emerges on the other side, she is wearing a black double-breasted skirt suit and has short hair. In fact, she is not the same woman at all, although she is still with the same grey haired man. I don’t think this is shape shifting – more an indication of duplicity and double lives that we will see several people live from this point in the film.)

Back to Alice and Nick, I think it is likely that she used to participate in parties such as the one that Bill attends later that night, and possibly she remembered Nick playing the piano there. This also explains why, at the Sonata Café, Kubrick would include the seemingly mundane dialogue between Bill and Nick about Bill being married for nine years - to establish a plausible timeframe. Nick dropped out of medical school ten years earlier – maybe he was recruited??? Their paths could have crossed. Was Alice afraid of being recognized by Nick?

I also found it curious, when she was dancing with Szandor, that she made such a big deal about being married. Was her marriage to Bill her way out of that dark world? We are not told how she and Bill met. She doesn’t seem very happy in her marriage, but she and Bill have achieved a certain status, both social and financial and a level of normalcy and respectability in their lives. But she is still clearly traumatized by her past and it haunts her in her nightmares.

And the mask – why did she put it in bed on Bill’s pillow? It would be more logical to ask him about it, if she had accidentally found it. It is an ordinary enough mask. But it clearly means something else to her.

I was intrigued by the suggestion that I read somewhere (I think here, but I don’t remember the name of the thread, sorry) that Alice was still a participant in these parties, and indeed, Bill leaves the apartment after receiving word that one of his patients has died. One may even stretch the argument and suggest that patient was killed (remember the daughter’s shock at her father’s death, saying that he was having a really good day), and, of course, Domino could have easily been planted - all this done to keep Bill away from his apartment. What ruins this theory for me is that Alice calls him from their apartment and wants to know when he’ll be coming home. I think that she is no longer involved in that world, except when it comes back to her in her nightmares.

Calls him because she knows where he is or because someone else does?

I wonder if Bill Harford might have any thoughts about running for office in the future?

I've seen it about 10 times, I came away thinking the film was about the true nature of human sexuality or something like that.

Maybe you're deluding yourself into thinking there is more to the film than is really there, but I'm curious to hear what you have to say.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 60175383

Go back and watch the scene at Ziglers Party right before Nicole Kidman walks through a doorway and grabs a champaign glass from a waiter. Pay attention to a woman in a dark red dress dancing with a white haired man as Alice tells Bill she has to go to the bathroom. As she walks through the doorway, the woman shape shifts into a completely different woman in a black dress.

If you know anything about Stanley Kubrick, you will know this is not a coincidence.

Kubrick was notorious for shooting hundreds of takes of just a single scene, if something is in there, it's cause Kubrick wanted it in there. It wasn't an extra accident, Kubrick would never allow that.

He obviously wanted shape shifting woman in this movie.

This is just one example of what i'm talking about, I have discovered thousands more!

Wasn't the mask on the pillow just a sign that someone from the elite had been there? A reminder to Cruise's character that he's now a marked man and that if he talks, something will happen to him and Alice, too. Of course, Alice might have put it there, too.

It's not what most youtube videos or websites say it is. You have to watch it with a fine tooth comb, with an open mind...

Everything you think you believe about the illuminati is wrong, a kind of charade , the whole movie is a fake. Eyes wide shut is a movie where 99.9% will never understand unless they are guided or watch it 100X times as I have frame by frame!

Kubrick completely figured out the illuminati, and he blew the whistle, while predicting his own death, putting it all on Film. This is the work of a great man.

If you think the movie is about a secret society sex cult you are wrong. If you think its only about about marriage and infidelity you are only seeing 0.1% of the story.

The actual story is beautiful. It's a blue print, a modern day bible and guide book for those who are awake enough to read it.

I can help you solve the puzzle, but you have to be ready to walk through the door.

If you believe in shape shifters they are in the movie also 5a

Kubrick was demonstrating an initiation. From red to black. It's a rite of passage, initiate to initiated. All with the 8 pointed star of Ishtar in the background.

Anyone of you spotted the Eye of Horus on Tom Cruises back yet? This isn't a question of interpretation, this is a blatant confirmation but fleeting signal for those looking closely enough?

I know this is an older thread, but I'd like to revisit it especially as I only more recently discovered the Eye of Horus (Ra) on Cruises back, I'm wondering if anyone else had spotted it too?

I believe it made him a marked man by the 'Illuminated ones' but wanted to find out if anyone else had another interpretation?

The scene starts around 4 mins 55 seconds into the film. The necklace the woman is wearing forms a V triangle into a giant Dark Red Jewel. The woman she shape shifts into is wearing a upside down triangle V Neck Dress, and she is shown in a mirror at the exact moment the shape shift happens...

No one has ever caught this till now, you are welcome. There is way more in this move than meets the eye!

Scott Tobias knows the secret of EWS.
Can you figure it out? Here's a clue. Layering.
Remember, above everything else Kubrick was an

Eyes Wide Shut is indeed not simply about a relationship, it is about all of the outside forces and influences that define that relationship. It is about the eternal back-and-forth between the male and female principles in a confused and decadent modern world. Also, more importantly, it is about the group that rules this modern world – a secret elite that channels this struggle between the male and female principles in a specific and esoteric matter. The movie however does not spell out anything. Like all great art, messages are communicated through subtle symbols and mysterious riddles.

They are worshipping God. In white. All colors bleed into one.

[link to www.youtube.com (secure)]

there is the scene in eyes wide shut, where they 'leave the rainbow room' with the Christmas Tree, to go into the ritual of debauchery (representing incarnation into the flesh)

possibly, maybe maybe not. just a theory.

"Continue down your mistaken path." Forget the symbolism. I'm telling you how to view the video. Layer it. Then layer the layers. Over and over again. Follow Bill's instructions when he's in the car talkng to the taxi driver outside of the mansion. This movie is incredible. Wait till it starts to unfold. There's not just one way to view it. It's like an interactive virtual reality movie. Kind of like a crazy dream story. Or maybe confessions of a sick mind.

Re: Ive figured out Eyes Wide shut, Stanley Kubrick was a genius, illuminati level genius
11 pages and the OP hasn't delivered the juicy bits!? I LOVE Kubrick films and have seen them all 100s of times. EWS is the one that escapes me and I have found some symbolism but know that there must be a LOT more to it.

OP, could you give us some concrete examples of your discoveries? You've alluded to a great deal but these pages are only a tease. I want to know more about the layering you speak of...

This scene from The Shining shows layering within a scene playing forwards and backwards. It might be nothing at all, but it demonstrates the symmetry Kubrick used in framing his scenes. After all, he was an excellent photographer and took many shots, many takes, and extensive research that bordered on insanity for each and every one of his movies... Now spill what you know about EWS!
