Mount Redoubt has been showing signs of increased activity, and scientists are taking extra steps to ensure their monitoring networks are upgraded and ready to provide data. Geological experts said they expected the activity to continue for weeks or months back in March of this year, when it reportedly rumbled back to life after a long period of domancy. The last time the volcano was active was in 1989, when eruptions lasted 5 months. The alert level advisory for aviation was raised to yellow, in order to insure pilots didn't get caught up in any ash that might spew upwards. Scientists had noted a series of small earthquakes occurring on the mountain, and now they are becoming more powerful but less frequent. Mount Redoubt is 10,197 feet tall, and the biggest fear observers have at this point is that a lava dome that formed in the middle of the volcano will erupt. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 855465 United States 01/02/2010 02:21 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Kilauea SUMMARY: Hawaiian Volcano Observatory / USGS Volcano Hazards Program Daily Update Report for KILAUEA LOCATION: Hawaiian Islands VOLCANO: KILAUEA (CAVW #1302-01-) 19°25'16" N 155°17'13" W 4091 feet (1247 meters) STATUS: Volcano Alert Level = WATCH Aviation Color Code = ORANGE ISSUED: Saturday, January 2 2010 - 11:13 AM CST DETAILS: January is Volcano Awareness Month in Hawai`i County. Check our homepage, hvo.wr.usgs.gov, for a schedule of events. Activity Summary for past 24 hours: Kilauea continued to erupt from two vents; after 3.5 days of DI deflation, DI inflation started just before midnight. At the summit, lava returned to webcam view in an opening in the bottom of a deep pit inset within the floor of Halema`uma`u Crater and provided weak glow from the pit overnight. Effusion of lava may have decreased or paused from the east rift zone vents; lava continued entering the ocean. Sulfur dioxide emission rates from both vents remain elevated. Past 24 hours at Kilauea summit: DI inflation started at 11 pm and at 11:30, the lava surface, within a single opening at the bottom of a deep pit inset within the floor of Halema`uma`u Crater, started to rise and spatter within webcam view. Glow was visible from the Jaggar Museum Overlook. This morning, the gas plume from the summit vent is rising vertically at least 600 m (2,000 ft) before moving to the northwest. The most recent sulfur dioxide emission rate measurement was 800 tonnes/day on December 22, significantly above the 2003-2007 average of 140 tonnes/day; new measurements must await the return of moderate trade winds. Small amounts of ash-sized tephra continued to be carried out of the vent by the rising gases. The summit tiltmeter network recorded the switch to DI inflation at 11 pm last night but only recovered a fraction of the deflation before leveling off. The GPS network, which is less sensitive than the tiltmeter network, recorded about 1 cm of contraction over the last 3 months. Seismic tremor levels were elevated (as they have been since late 2007). Three earthquakes beneath Kilauea were strong enough to be located - one beneath the summit caldera, a deep one below the area west of the summit, and another deep one on south flank faults. Past 24 hours at the middle east rift zone vents and flow field: Magma degases through Pu`u `O`o crater before erupting from the TEB vent, located 2 km to the east. The most recent sulfur dioxide emission rate measurement was 900 tonnes/day on December 18, elevated but below the 2003-2007 average of 1,700 tonnes/day; new measurements must await the return of moderate trade winds. Glow was again recorded by Webcam overnight in Pu`u `O`o Crater. The tiltmeter on the north flank of Pu`u `O`o recorded a flattening of the DI deflation and possibly the start of DI inflation around 4 am this morning. The GPS network, which is less sensitive than the tiltmeter network, recorded continued slow contraction of the cone, amounting to almost 3 cm of contraction over the past 3 months; this rate slowed significantly in the past three weeks turning to extension between Dec. 22-26. Seismic tremor levels at Pu`u `O`o and the TEB vent were at low values. Lava trickled through tubes from the TEB vent to the coast and entered the ocean at Waikupanaha yesterday. GOES-WEST thermal anomalies were undetectable overnight suggesting diminished surface flow activity through dawn. HAZARD ALERT: The lava delta and adjacent areas both inland and out to sea are some of the most hazardous areas on the flow field. Frequent delta/bench collapses give little warning, can produce hot rock falls inland and in the adjacent ocean, and can produce large local waves. The steam plume produced by lava entering the ocean contains fine lava fragments and an assortment of acid droplets that can be harmful to your health. The rapidly changing conditions near the ocean entry have been responsible for many injuries and a few deaths. Maps, photos, webcam views, and other information about Kilauea Volcano are available at [link to volcanoes.usgs.gov] A daily update summary is available by phone at (808) 967-8862. A map with details of earthquakes located within the past two weeks can be found at [link to tux.wr.usgs.gov] A definition of alert levels can be found at [link to volcanoes.usgs.govctivitylertsystem] Definitions of Terms Used: Halema`uma`u Overlook vent: has been difficult to describe concisely. The vent is actually a pit, or crater, in the floor of the larger Halema`uma`u Crater in the floor of the even larger Kilauea caldera or crater - a crater within a crater within a crater. The pit is about 140 m (460 ft) in diameter at the Halema`uma`u Crater floor, is about 50 m in diameter at the pit floor, and is about 200 m (660 ft) deep. As of November, 2009, a lava pond surface has been visible in a hole in the floor of this pit. glow: light from an unseen source; indirect light. CD: Hawai`i County Civil Defense RB2S2BL earthquakes: earthquakes that were recorded but were too small to be located. These quakes have magnitudes less than 1.7 and may only be recorded by one or two seismometers. Recording at a minimum of 4 seismometer sites is required to locate an earthquake. tonne: metric unit equal to 1,000 kilograms, 2,204.6 lbs, or 1.1 English tons. tephra: all material deposited by fallout from an eruption-related plume, regardless of size. ash: tephra less than 2 mm (5/64 inches) in size. TEB: Thanksgiving Eve Breakout, the designation used for lava flows that started with a breakout on November 21, 2007. DI tilt event: DI is an abbreviation for 'deflation-inflation' and describes a volcanic event of uncertain significance. DI events are recorded by tiltmeters at Kilauea summit as an abrupt deflation of up to a few microradians in magnitude lasting several hours to 2-3 days followed by an abrupt inflation of approximately equal magnitude. The tilt events are usually accompanied by an increase in summit tremor during the deflation phase. A careful analysis of these events suggests that they may be related to changes in magma supply to a storage reservoir at less than 1 km depth, just east of Halema`uma`u crater. Usually, though not always, these changes propagate through the magma conduit from the summit to the eruption site, as many of the DI events at Kilauea summit are also recorded at a tiltmeter at Pu`u `O`o, delayed by 1-2 hours. DI events often correlate with lava pulses and/or pauses in the eruption at the Pu`u `O`o/July 21/TEB vents. More definitions with photos can be found at [link to volcano.wr.usgs.govbout] . The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory is one of five volcano observatories within the U.S. Geological Survey and is responsible for monitoring volcanoes and earthquakes in Hawai`i. User ID: 855726 United Kingdom 01/02/2010 07:40 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Alaska’s Redoubt volcano seems to be calming down after its recent burst of seismic activity, which led to an increase in the alert level to Yellow/Advisory on 28 December 2009. The weekly bulletin issued on 1 January 2010 by the Alaska Volcano Observatory reports that the ’swarm of shallow, small earthquakes that began last Sunday, December 27 at Redoubt Volcano has greatly diminished or ceased’, and that an aerial inspection on 31 December showed no changes in the appearance of the volcano and no sign of instability at the lava dome. Surface temperatures at the dome remain high, in line with expectations, while magmatic gas output from the dome area ‘is somewhat elevated compared to the last measurement in early November’. The scientists at the Alaska Volcano Observatory are continuing to examine what might have caused the recent activity: one possible cause is ‘input of new magma or remobilization of existing magma within volcano’s shallow plumbing system’. AVO notes that the process ‘appears to have ceased or paused’, but may reappear and possibly lead to additional eruptive activity, although the ’sharp increase in seismicity and other marked changes prior to such activity’ would provide some warning of what was going on. For the moment AVO is keeping a close watch on things, and Redoubt remains at Yellow/Advisory. Cheers. ----------------------------- "Shit, if this is gonna be that kind of party, I'm going to stick my dick in the mashed potatoes."
