Redoubt Volcano Alaska
[link to eruptions.wordpress.com]

The Alaska Volcano Observatory has put Redoubt on orange alert for aviation and suggest that an eruption could occur with “hours to days”. The most recent update from AVO says that a recent overflight of the volcano done this afternoon shows no evidence that an eruption has started, but steam and sulfur output has increased. Meanwhile, seismicity at the volcano is also well above background. In all, it sounds like the Aleutians might have yet another volcano erupting if these signs continue.

ORANGE/WATCH 2009-01-26 13:02:21 - Status Report
Unrest at Redoubt Volcano continues. Seismicity at stations closest to the volcano's summit has declined somewhat starting at about 4:00 AKT this morning, but remains well above background levels.

Nothing unusual has been seen over the past 24 hours in clear to partly cloudy satellite views. AVO conducted an overflight of the volcano yesterday afternoon, and observations confirm that an eruption has not occurred. Increased steaming through previously observed sources in the snow and ice cover were seen and sulfur gas emissions were noted. There was no significant disruption of the glacial ice, nor any apparent increased water discharge down the Drift River. A gas-measurement flight to the volcano is underway today.

The current activity at Redoubt could be precursory to an eruption, perhaps within days. A further increase in seismicity is expected to accompany an eruption. Staff are currently monitoring the volcano 24 hours a day.

Beginning at 00:58 AST (9:58 UTC) yesterday morning, nearly continuous volcanic tremor was recorded at stations near Redoubt's summit, prompting AVO to raise the Aviation Color Code to ORANGE and the Alert Level to WATCH at 02:09 AST (11:09 UTC).
Cheers.

Alaska volcano expected to erupt soon

CNN) -- A volcano in south-central Alaska could erupt within days or weeks, authorities said.

1 of 3 "The level of seismic activity" has "increased markedly" in recent days at Mount Redoubt, a 10,197-foot peak about 100 miles southwest of Anchorage, the state's most populous city, according to the Alaska Volcano Observatory.

"We don't have a crystal ball," said Peter Cervelli, a research geophysicist with the observatory. But "we expect based on the past behavior of this volcano that this activity is going to culminate in an eruption."

The activity has consisted "of a combination of discrete, relatively small earthquakes and periods of more continuous volcanic tremor." The activity prompted the observatory to raise the alert level Sunday, the observatory said.

The volcano last erupted nearly 20 years ago, in December 1989, and continued until April 1990. Geologists think there could be an eruption "similar to or smaller than the one that occurred in 1989-90."

The eruption nearly two decades ago spread ash in Kenai, about 50 miles west of the mountain, and in Anchorage, where it disrupted air traffic operations. Cervelli said the ash plumes caused engine failure on a jet during that period.

"It's not the closest volcano to Anchorage," Cervelli said, but "it has the potential to disrupt air traffic at Anchorage."

Redoubt is just a pimple on the giant face that is Alaska...

You guys just don't get it. We have masks and plans for ash, but there is nothing else to worry about.

It is surreal to see something about Redoubt pinned on GLP.

I go to APU here. The Alaska Volcano Observatory is on our campus. The control room there would blow your mind... We have every damn volcano up here pegged with equipment that sends real time data to about 40 computer monitors.

Mt. Spurr is the one I worry about because it is just across the inlet from my house. If I were in Kenai or Homer I'd worry about Augustine and Redoubt, but they are basically threatening total wilderness and about 300 hard ass Alaskans...

Give me a break guys, we have our masks. Go worry about your Jellystone.

My folks were in Anchorage in the '50s when Mt. Spurr blew. What a mess. I was there in the '80s when it blew too. Nobody was leaving the state - at least by air. We couldn't get out of Dodge unless we were going to go via the Alcan (Alaska-Canada Highway).

Working in the airline biz, these eruptions cause extreme havoc on aircraft engines. Years ago, a 747 lost all four engines and barely got them restarted before they made an emergency landing in Anchorage.

The Aleutian Chain volcanoes are burping all the time - it's amazing to see them spewing (from the air).

I was always concerned more about earthquakes. I went to the Palmer Observatory once and asked them - where's the fault lines? They said to consider the whole state like a cracked egg - fault lines are EVERYWHERE.

I was waaaay down-wind of Mt. St. Helens Volcano, and the ash that accumulated here was BAD ARSE! It lasted for weeks and screwed up everything!

The worst part of Mt. St. Helen's eruption was that it actually changed the weather patterns and created a glitch in the seasons; temperatures, rainfall, snowfall, winds, etc. The weather has not been the same since she BLEW!

Just a little sumpin sumpin for the Alaskans to think about, as well as us down below it!

Please, we eat godzillas for breakfast up here....

They don't blow everyday, but we had at least three or four major eruptions last year. One of which completely wiped out an Aleutian Island. The USGS crew got out by boat about three hours before it went. That is doom. Since I am not a USGS worker on Redoubt, I fear no ash... or godzilla num nums for that matter.

It could be small or huge , but usually things fall in between. It is on a penisula about 200 miles southwest of Anchorage. Nikiski or something like is the closest city i say on the map i was looking at (wiki) that is about 100 miles or so away.
My theory is that since gravity is stronger where the ground is dense than atop of magma (liquid-less dense)
people gain incredible strength. And if it bows up they go flying for up to a mile or so.

Wonder if she's been stealing C4 out of the National Guard Armory there and dumping it into Rodoubt every chance she gets? Heaven knows the bitch will do ANYTHING for publicity. Also, do people have insurance against this kind of event or is it strictly up to the government to step in and try to pass out cash to make people whole again?

I'm sure we'll have palin in front of TV cameras very soon - fully made up and wearing something she got during the convention if possible - telling the world why they should feel sorry for her, for alaska, and for the cities that may be effected. One things for certain - it doesn't look like a yellowstone or even close! It's just a "plain vanilla volcano" not the super variety!

Scratch the C4 - Palin might have just gone to the foothills of the volcano and started telling lies about it. That would be enough to make almost anything explode with rage!!!!
