They did even in the 1980s. One of their anti-ship missiles was to be fired in salvos of three, with one missile taking the lead and flying ahead and high, while the other two came in behind, just above the water. The lead missile would relay targeting data to the following missiles. If it was destroyed by the aegis shield (IE a destroyer with radar controlled gatling guns) one of the other missiles would take its place, and guide the final missile in. It is a credible threat, because these missiles are quite fast, and a ship doesn't turn that sharply. You can predict where it will be 3 seconds later with relative ease. Any one of these missiles is powerful enough to take out a carrier or other major fleet component.

Now they have the Sunburn missile, which is much faster still. I don't believe these missiles have such a complex flight and targeting control system, but they are fast enough that if you could launch a few at a carrier simultaneously it's doubtful that the gatling guns could track and destroy all of them.
