Conceptually, this is the beauty of the assymetrical approach.

Why spend trillions developing carrier groups and instead invest in missile technology? That's what Russia (and China) decided to do a long time ago.

Okay, the real deal is this:

China has these amazing weapons.
The US may or may not be able to stop them.

Doesn't matter.

See, the US has a problem. These mega carriers are lame ducks. Why? Because they are "all your eggs in one basket" errors.

And here is why:

China can manufacture a vast amount of these missiles. The US can shoot down as many as they desire. All that China needs to be able to do is shoot many of them very quickly and in a sustained manner because..

Only ONE needs to succeed.

If just ONE gets through the US defences, a major blow is struck because the aircraft carrier is then wounded if not sunk.

Thereafter it's a simple matter for China to sink it completely once the first solid strike is in.

The US has 1000s of personnel on board and all those aircraft, whether in the sky or on deck, it doesn't matter. If the carrier goes down, then entire fleet of aircraft is taken out as well as the huge array of functions that the aircraft carrier performs.

It is impossible for the US to churn out vast numbers of these carriers and even if it did, it wouldn't be possible to staff them. And even if they did, then it wouldn't be possible to deploy them. And even if they did, the huge gains obtained by sinking them with the massive loss of capacity for the sake of a few missiles makes it a complete no-brainer for the Chinese.

So all that they need to do is have a missile that is difficult to shoot down. Not impossible. Not capable of avoiding all the US secret defences. Just difficult. That's it.

And then they need to do what China does very, very well: Produce a large number of them.

Checkmate.

They can rain down missiles on the US carriers knocking out huge capacity and back that up by the full force of their own military might.

See, China just wants to stop the US from meddling in its backyard. The US wants a mighty war horse to send out and attack other countries.

That places the US in a weaker position.

The US isn't a "defence force", it's an "attack force". Defence has sod-all to do with it because no-one is going to be attacking the US in the short term and neither was it a credible threat this past 50 years. Defence is not what the machine is set up for. In fact, the US have little to no real territorial defence.

It's all about attack and hostile foreign engagement in far away places.

That's what the US machine is all about. Attack, not defence.

Which means that it's particularly vulnerable to large knock-outs.

That is why the US has failed so badly in all its recent wars. Every single one of them the US has lost or had its butt handed to it. Because it cannot handle a dispersed, country-wide warfare. The machine isn't capable of that.

So China can achieve its aim because its aim is local to its borders, and that's to stop US military invasions. China is making no attempt for distance war. It's all about defence, not attack. They have no interest in attacking the US or any foreign country and they regard Taiwan as theirs anyway and its local to them.

This is why China has already won that war.

And let's be realistic. China's capabilities are not merely physical defence. It has the US 100% dependent on it for the entire US economy and most of what the US consumes. The US cannot start a war with China because is cannot afford to.

China can take over the US without a shot being fired. It simply has to withdraw its cash. That's it. The US will collapse instantly. And even if the US somehow found a miracle way to survive that, China could just stop sending goods to the US and that would collapse the nation on so many levels it's just not worth thinking about it.

No-one would risk it.

Even if the US survived THAT, the rest of the world wouldn't and would be forced to isolate the US at best, because the world depends on China too.

None of these war machines can exist without it, and nothing that these war machines do can create it.

Therefore, these war machine will never be used if it risks the money. Period.

In that sense, American consumers who ran up such a massive debt to China were real patriots because that debt absolutely guarantees that China won't destroy the US.

These patriots also made the US totally dependent on China.

So that also guarantees that the US cannot destroy China.

If the US consumer had not put the US into such massive debt to China, and consumed so many Chinese goods and created such a boom in China, then hostilities could be more open and much more likely to boil over.

But this debt and economic dependency means that war cannot happen.

I just don't see that China and the US can get into a conflict at any time in the near future. So I am as certain as it's possible to be that at least in that scenario, your boy is safe.

It doesn't matter what the toys are that the kids in the bath can throw at each other, the bottom line is that they need each other too much because of the fine American consumer that has consumed China to economic glory and borrowed the US into a massive debt pile to China.

Like the banks that are "too big to fail", the US debt to China is "too big to fail" as well.

If China can successfully pull its money out of the US and convert it elsewhere, then that is an entirely different situation. At that point, conflict may be possible, especially if the US is no longer a massive consumer of Chinese goods.

But even if they get their money out, the US is a vast consumer of Chinese goods. Therefore China would not be able to risk war with the US.

Debt and consumption are the two most powerful instruments of peace between the two countries.

Had this existed with the USSR, the cold war would have been impossible.
