Anonymous Coward User ID: 156099 United States 09/25/2008 04:17 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | An apocryphal story. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 454905Linitus looked over the crowd. His strongly muscled arms carried his shield and spear with authority. A more fine example of Roman never existed. The crowd before him eagerly awaited his words. The signs and portents had all turned. Strange and unusual things were occurring and the world around them had changed. Linitus knew he needed to quiet the crowd; to bring them back to themselves and set aside their fears for the Glory of Rome. Linitus gestured at the sky. "The portents are bad. It is true. But things are never quite as bad as they seem." He paused. "Or as great as they seem...sadly." Some members of the crowd laughed, more as a release of tension than from genuine humor. Still though, the attempt at humor was enough to convince many in that moment that their fears were groundless. "The world is not going to end tomorrow. There's still time. Please return to your homes. Go about your business, and wait for the signs and portents to stop." Slowly, the crowd turned and obeyed...all but a few. Linitus knew that before an hour was up the town would lose these citizens to the Road. They'd surrender to their fear and leave behind their possessions and all for what? All because a few things had changed. His aide stepped close. "Should we stop the ones who try to leave?" Linitus sneered. "No...let them go. Pompeii is better without them." This is the first time I have seen or read this. Thank you AC for posting it. |

That was when we still thrived in the glory years of 20th Century industrial production, and the manufacturing sector represented a much larger segment of our economy. In the 80 years since, we have segued into an economy built on the service industry (mainly servicing debt it seems!), and should we see a similar economic contraction, the real unemployment rate is sure to be higher. Anonymous Coward User ID: 211268 Canada 09/25/2008 04:50 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Duncan: Quoting: whoknew 509724Heading to a third world economy, is not the end of the world. Yeah, it is rough, but other countries have survived it, and USA can survive it, too. Some persons paint the picture, like some scene taken from Mad Max. It is not quite that dramatic. Getting ready for tough times is always wise. Good idea to have simplify expenses and to find ways to provide our needs. But, as important as the material preparations, is the ATTITUDE. That's what worries me, even more than the economy, about the american society. A society that is not mentally prepared for a depression (of any kind) and has guns, is a very, very, dangerous society. Panic and the shock to live without the comfort that they were used to, may create much more problems, than the depression itself. I would recommend everybody, to mentally prepare for this very possible tough times. It is not just about stocking piles of food in your pantry and piles of guns in your bunkers. It is also abou stocking tons of common sense and flexibility in your mind and tons of tolerance in your heart. USA has an individualistic society. That is going to make it hard to adapt to possible adjustments like: 1. Parents living with their sons/daughters in a limited space and with a limited budget. Third world countries, tend to be "family oriented", not just because of social/moral reasons. The economical issue plays an important part and it takes a lot of tolerance, patience, consideration, respect, etc., to make it work. Everybody needs to learn to be considerate and supportive. The word "mine" is not as used as the word "our". 2. Community and unity is a "must" in a third world economy, exactly for what you said: Money is restricted. To be ready to trade services (example: One week the neighbor takes the kids to school, one neighbor fixes your roof, you fix his car, etc). In order to be able to work as a community, all that bullshit of suing for stupidities or calling the cops because you can't tell your neighbor to turn his music down, has to stop. Communication and negotiation without 'daddy authority" needs to be learnt by americans again. Kids need to learn to respect and obey their parents again, and for that, parents need to spend more time teaching them discipline and manners. Stop treating your kids like mini gods, and then complaining when they reach adolescence and they really believe they are gods and deserve everything without giving anything in return. I keep reading threads here about "running to the hills" and "surviving" with this individualist mentality. That won't work. That separation will only get people isolated, irritable and frustrated...and armed. Not a good combination. In a third world economy, the individualistic mentality is out of context. You need to learn to create at least mentally, a social/family/group mentality to make it work or all those 'survivors' in their bunkers, will end up killing each other, for fear of being "invaded" or "robbed". Good luck to all of you. Best post of the day. I SECOND THAT I guess iam one of the few staying put -in a city never mind you ... at least I am prepared spiritually emotionally, mentally and well still missing the physically part. You forget. The horse has run away and now you want to close the barn door. This is all scripted. They know a lot of people out there are pissed off and some are ready to take action against their (TPTB) criminal activities. They will give you the opportunity to take action but not against them, against each other. A few more scripted events to pit the blacks, hispanics and whites against each other not to mention the gangs, criminals and others who will want to take advantage of the situation and you have a recipie for disaster of unimaginable porportions. |

TX PATRIOT User ID: 506675 United States 09/25/2008 05:03 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | our well is now cut over to PV Quoting: Duncan KunzDK, translation please? Sorry. Our well is run by an alternating-current (ac) motor which pumps the water from the ground and into a pressure tank. the well is pretty shallow (~25 ft), but by adding the work to get the pressure tank's pressure up to 45 psi, it's the power equivalent of pumping the water up about 130 feet. The motor, being an AC type, ran off regular grid power (110 volts, 50 Hz), just like in your house. What I did was to get four Surrette batteries and a 160-Watt photovoltaic (PV) module to charge them. The direct current (dc) output from the bateries goes through an inverter which changes it to alternating current. The well pump thinks it's looking at grid power, but it really isn't. Given that there isn't much rain where I live (less than 10 in/25 cm per year), I can be assured of about 6 hours of full sun a day in the summer and 4.5 sun-hours in the winter. The battery capacity is twice as large as it needs to be, but I got the extra batteries to provide autonomy for them on those days where it's overcast and the PV modules don't produce any electricity. I'm also working on a circuit which will let the big Surrettes charge all my other batteries, whether gel-cells, sealed lead-acid for the car and the bike, or all the little NiMH batteries for the laptop, radio, cameras, and flashlights. It's not feasible to use PV to run a house (heating, cooling, cooking, etc.) -- not even a little one like the cabin. I can cook with a dutch oven and sweat in the summertime, but if i don't have a guaranteed supply of potable water, I will die. If the grid goes, I will be uncomfortable (hey, I like air conditioning and a microwave oven) but at least I'll survive!! Thanks, DK. The reason I inquired is because my father is looking at his well options right now. Good info. Thanks. . |

If you have a copy of MS-Excel, I put together an interactive spreadsheet that lets you input data about your well (static depth, flow-rate, drawdown, and whether you will be pumping to an elevated tank or pressure tank), and will give you the amount of power in array Watts needed to get the water out. You can then figure out what kind of batteries and pump you will need, and, based on the amount of sunlight where you live, you can engineer the most cost-effective approach which will do the job and see you through a few days of overcast weather. If you want a copy, email me at [email protected], and I'll send it to you, along with instructions on how to work it. Where's the EVIDENCE, Jim? |

What makes you certain of this doom scenario? Quoting: Duncan KunzI am not certain of anything. Of course, I used to know it all when I was in my twenties, but over the past foty years I must've gotten dumber and dumber. I am concerned enough to prepare for some serious stuff because of our running out of exploitable petroleum products (in the long run) and the fact that we could slide into a depression (in the short run). I'm on the verge of getting a generous pension from my empolyer as well as social security from Uncle Pig. This could very well go away, and I would have to continue working some of my other jobs -- and my wife will have to continue her job as an RN -- to keep things going. With a situation like that, it seems pretty obvious that the less I am tied to things like grocery and utility bills, the better off my family and I will be. Nice post DK! |

Quoting: Duncan KunzI have been debunking woo-woo crap from the first day I got here. Every time some bozo has said "the shit's gonna hit the fan", I asked for evidence as to why they think it will and never got an answer. Six months ago, I noticed some changes and bought a little mini-farm in Gila County, picking it because it was about an hour's drive from home, pretty remote, and had a good producing well. Three months ago I pretty much liquidated my 401(k) and paid my bills. This week I am moving a lot of my special belongings up to the cabin. My kids are ready to leave college and slide up for an "extended vacation" at a moment's notice. I eat woo-woos and conspiracy nuts for breakfast and I've been doing it for years. If I say that thre's a good possibility that the excrement is about to hit the air-handler, then either I'm as crazy as most of you or else I have managed to connect the dots that lots of you haven't. I'd suggest you look at some of the postings by folks like Underground Dude, Omega, Geogal, Evil Twin, and others. Here's a good place to start: Thread: Yo Omega Bug out gear prepared and have been stocking up for two years now. If DK is prepping to blow the hatch, I would suggest that you at least take notice and follow the links he gave you. Many of us here, member and AC alike have recognized a pattern forming that told us something really bad was coming around the corner and posted innumerable threads about it. Those who are new to the forum that posted ridiculous replies ridiculing the posts etc, that's alright, we have all been there. ::worldshee: Older and wiser now and after years in this forum, you get pretty good at sorting out the bull quickly and effectively. Duncan should be able to draw Veterans benefits from this forum. I am not saying you should agree with everything he says, but simply to pay attention to what he says and his reasoning behind it. Whether you agree with him or not, his perspectives may help you to develop your own on a much stronger foundation. People can say whatever they want about Duncan, their entitled to their opinion, and yes he can really piss you off (I am no exception as when I first came in here, he did tick me off on several occasions), but he makes you think about, analyze and substantiate a situation rather than just running with the first news article you find. Perfect example of how easily moved the sheep are is the Duke LaCrosse case. People were hanging those guys before the trial even started. Many of us are when we come in to this type of forum for the first time and the deprogramming process can be painful Duncan makes you put together the evidence behind your post to validate your claims and sometimes that really ticks you off because you really want to believe what you are posting. Worst victims are the ac's that are new to the forum. I have been here a long time and when I first started coming I had a couple of sessions with Duncan and he really ticked me off. However, this forum needs people like him and should he challenge you on something you will quickly learn how many holes your argument holds if you are not prepared to back up your claims. However, just because he may not agree with you does not necessarily mean your wrong either. None of us has all the answers, but as a group, the collective knowledge in this forum is a terrific tool if you use it the right way. If you are new here don't take things too personally, especially if one of the veterans (Trin, SHR, Omega, Traveler, Mr Obvious, Evil Twin etc) in here challenges your way of thinking. It may be the best thing that ever happens to you, even if you do not agree with them... |
