Re: Are people going broke?
I for one got over $4800 dollars in Free Trump $$ and still had to go to work. I have $1600 left over and been only spending it at the bar buying drinks for my buds and playing Pull Tabs. Thanks Trump, for contributing to my delinquencies when I was so closed to kicking the gambling habit, but hey you kept sending me free money.

So, disclaimer, I’m one of those people that still makes money selling things on eBay. I’ve been doing it as a *cringe* “side hustle” to make a little extra cash on and off for the last 10 years.

I think only collectibles will sell on ebay nowadays. Need to study the market before listing items. If there are buyers, they will pay the asked prices.

I would do "buy it now" rather than auctions.

Ebay fees have gone up substantially, so have shipping costs. That is a big problem.

Re: Are people going broke?
I've done a lot of shopping on Ebay over the last 15 years, and it all stoped when I retired a couple of months ago, because I'm living on savings now. No SS because I was always a private contractor, and never paid SS taxes.

Because I have no income, other than a little bit from my CDs, I get free healthcare, and 40% off of my electric bill. I can NOT get food stamps because I have way too much in my savings. Food stamps requires bank statements.

I still pay about $3,500 a year in taxes, so I get as much free shit as I can, to get that money back from the government.

I really miss shopping on Ebay.

I think the shipping cost is killing online purchases. I can't sell small $5 items and ask almost that much in shipping. It makes no sense to the buyer. I sell on Mercari and DePop it is deader than a doornail.

This. The cost for international shipping has gone through the roof.

Local isn't much better.

All the cool stuff on Ebay is gone because the casual sellers who sold the rare vintage stuff are long gone.Nobody is going to pay taxes on old tools or other odds and ends plus all the fucking fees.Anything over 600 gross you have to report and figure out how much you paid and how much profit you made on an old collectible antique vintage tool toy fishing lure etc.The stuff i am into used to be easy to find now overpriced junk, wore out broken and way overpriced.AND no one has any fucking spare change for frivolities anyway.

I sell tools on Ebay and i can confirm aside from a few of my bread and butter machines that sell generally in 24 hours, buyers have dropped out completely. A $3000 piece of equipment i am trying to sell for $1200 has been on for months.

Re: Are people going broke?
I sold a very small amateur radio recently on QTH.com.

It cost $35 for shipping Priority Mail!!!! Plus $19 for insurance for a box that weighed about 3 pounds and was about 1-foot square.

Shipping is a ripoff at those prices. I used to sell on eBay a lot over the past 25 years (start '97) and made lots of bucks. But for the past two years, I haven't bothered to sell squat on there even though I do have lots of electronic stock. It's just a waste of time.

Add to the fact the IRS has slapped reporting requirements of sales over $600, no just not worth it. I'd rather donate the stock to the local thrift store.

Yeah, the economy is shit now thanks to Biden. But ask him and he thinks he's doing great.

No fees unless you use boost advertising. Obviously it's more localized but could still be a way to get it sold but eBay is losing market share recently

Re: Are people going broke?
So, disclaimer, I’m one of those people that still makes money selling things on eBay. I’ve been doing it as a *cringe* “side hustle” to make a little extra cash on and off for the last 10 years.

I’ve sold electronics, musical equipment, kitchen equipment, automotive parts, furniture, hand/power tools, basically anything that I think I can flip. Sometimes I make a little, sometimes I make a lot. It really depends on the item.

Now, before I go any further, I realize that less people purchase off of eBay than in years past. I get that. However, more people do than might be expected. That’s more or less why I still sell.

During the start of the pandemic things were going great. I mean, REALLY great. So great, in fact, I converted one of the bedrooms in my home into a tiny warehouse with isle shelving. Within just a few weeks, I emptied the entire room. I repeated this about 4 times in around 5 months. It was pretty cool and amounted to around an extra 1500 per month on average.

Fast forward to the tail end of 2022. I can’t get ANYTHING SOLD. ANYTHING. I’ve literally been sitting on the same items forever. Items that would have flown on the shelves two years ago are collecting dust.

Right now, one of the items I’m trying to sell is a husqvarna 20 inch gas powered chainsaw (new in box). Retail is around 450. I listed it for 325 with free shipping. To me, that seems like a pretty good deal. 6 weeks on line. No buyers.
A few days ago, I get an offer. Fifty dollars.. FIFTY DOLLARS. I was so annoyed, I pulled the listing.

I still get all the views I did but NOBODY is buying ANYTHING. In ten years of doing this, I’ve NEVER seen it this bad. I’m fairly certain that this economy is going to collapse in a few years.

I sell things on craigslist and you’re 100% right. Everyone tells me straight up that they can’t afford this or that even if i lower the price by 40-50%. Difficult times ahead

I use to make bank selling on eBay back from 1998 to 2012......around 30K a year.....stuff I got from estate sales, thrift shops, curbside finds, and clean out services.....

But Ebay/paypal got greedy and wanted a big cut and lots of BS fees.....not worth my time nowadays....
