Re: Are people going broke?
So, disclaimer, I’m one of those people that still makes money selling things on eBay. I’ve been doing it as a *cringe* “side hustle” to make a little extra cash on and off for the last 10 years.

I’ve sold electronics, musical equipment, kitchen equipment, automotive parts, furniture, hand/power tools, basically anything that I think I can flip. Sometimes I make a little, sometimes I make a lot. It really depends on the item.

Now, before I go any further, I realize that less people purchase off of eBay than in years past. I get that. However, more people do than might be expected. That’s more or less why I still sell.

During the start of the pandemic things were going great. I mean, REALLY great. So great, in fact, I converted one of the bedrooms in my home into a tiny warehouse with isle shelving. Within just a few weeks, I emptied the entire room. I repeated this about 4 times in around 5 months. It was pretty cool and amounted to around an extra 1500 per month on average.

Fast forward to the tail end of 2022. I can’t get ANYTHING SOLD. ANYTHING. I’ve literally been sitting on the same items forever. Items that would have flown on the shelves two years ago are collecting dust.

Right now, one of the items I’m trying to sell is a husqvarna 20 inch gas powered chainsaw (new in box). Retail is around 450. I listed it for 325 with free shipping. To me, that seems like a pretty good deal. 6 weeks on line. No buyers.
A few days ago, I get an offer. Fifty dollars.. FIFTY DOLLARS. I was so annoyed, I pulled the listing.

I still get all the views I did but NOBODY is buying ANYTHING. In ten years of doing this, I’ve NEVER seen it this bad. I’m fairly certain that this economy is going to collapse in a few years.

I sell things on craigslist and you’re 100% right. Everyone tells me straight up that they can’t afford this or that even if i lower the price by 40-50%. Difficult times ahead

My clients today actually LIED to me about the measurements. My bid based on the measurements they gave was $435. It turned out to be only 1/4 of the job. They lied so hard that they left out 3/4 of the entire job.
I drove an hour and actually primed the whole room before I realized that they had lied to me.
I confronted them, told them that job would normally be $800 and neither one of them ever once said that it wasn't intentional.
Thats what happens when the economy gets bad, people like this end up stiffing hard working laborers.
Fuckers. I told them to pound sand as I don't want yo work for liars. I only got $150 for the priming but at least I didn't stay there all day long busting my ass for half pay.
They didn't even have enough wallpaper because they were so stoopid that they didn't shorting me would also short them on wallpaper as I was the one who figured it out for them
Best yo use your intuition and pay close attention to it going forward mates.

Re: Are people going broke?
This is a very interesting thread since I was going to ask around about the selling conditions on eBay.

Dave Ramsey has said the average household has about $2,000 worth of stuff around the house that could be sold. Personally I think that's high, but I guess it all adds up, especially if you're a pack rat.

I was going to start the purge, but now I'm not so sure.

Re: Are people going broke?
I've done a lot of shopping on Ebay over the last 15 years, and it all stoped when I retired a couple of months ago, because I'm living on savings now. No SS because I was always a private contractor, and never paid SS taxes.

Because I have no income, other than a little bit from my CDs, I get free healthcare, and 40% off of my electric bill. I can NOT get food stamps because I have way too much in my savings. Food stamps requires bank statements.

I still pay about $3,500 a year in taxes, so I get as much free shit as I can, to get that money back from the government.

I really miss shopping on Ebay.

my wife does the ebay thing do she has like 500 items listed at any given time so nothing big just a side mission for side cash. slow as hell right now. it was only busy during covid because everyone was scared of the fake virus and got free stimulus checks while they sat at home. people who use ebay aren't dumb they will go for the cheapest listing of the same item so if you aren't the cheapest they will buy the one thats cheaper as long as the seller has good feedback.

EBAY has some crazy throttling AI system that only puts your lists forward depending on how much you list. So if you have slowed down creating listings they slow down your visibility. Its ultimately a scam platform and they make you work for them.

I use to make bank selling on eBay back from 1998 to 2012......around 30K a year.....stuff I got from estate sales, thrift shops, curbside finds, and clean out services.....

But Ebay/paypal got greedy and wanted a big cut and lots of BS fees.....not worth my time nowadays....

This started about a month ago in earnest. I was fairly easily able to sell things up until early January and then like a switch it all turned off. We are burning through money like crazy in my house even watching what we buy so I can imagine how bad it is for average people. We do pretty well compared to most so I’m not sure how the fvck people working in service jobs are surviving unless they share a house with 4 roommates. Ultimately those people are usually young and voted for it so I’m not shedding too many tears.

Not most. I want to go to Lee county Florida, I can't, Hotels are 300+ a night for some hole if you can even get a room. That means competition is fierce. I'm tempted to buy the unit I'm looking at sight unseen. I'm so desperate to get out of Tennessee.

There's been a shift in my locksmith business.... residential customers are drying up but my commercial and special projects side is booming....

Early during the covidian daze, I was upgrading a lot of people's security....BLM riots and covid scared people....sold and installed safes cuz people were storing cash at home....

Now residential customers are calling handymen to install locks (badly) to save money.....however the commercial side is picking up from all the businesses moving or closing up.....the special projects are from rich folk that are insulated from the downturn....

I got sick of Ebay when every time I saw an item I wanted, the seller would have "Best offer" enabled, and I'd make a best offer of maybe 20-30% less than the buy it now price, and they'd almost always just act hugely offended and usually put the price UP.

Screw Ebay, I haven't got time for that nonsense.

I sell clothes on Amazon $1M+/year last 8 years. Same pants that sold quick last year for $70, I can't $30 for them now.

Not just clothes. Prices have tanked 50% and sales still way down all categories. Don't take my word for it; check any item Keepa graph same thing across the board.
