So just price getting a remanufactured head installed, or simply repairing what you have.

It's even cheaper if you can do it yourself.

Too late for that, pistons don't like being kissed.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 81105157

This. NEVER buy an interference engine. Why ask for trouble?
 Quoting: Pilgrim001

Because I'm poor and bought what I can afford? Lol

If you don't have fuck ups like this theyll get to 400k miles easy.

VOLVO..... epiclol
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 84074538

What about it lol

It's a fantastic car. This was definitely my error.

Very slight pressure from that power steering hose being in the wrong spot did this lol

These are some of the most reliable cars. It's an awesome car! Great shape!

I'll probably just do a self rebuild. Might as well! I'd be spending about 3 times much otherwise and I didn't plan to get rid of this.

I want it to hit 4-500k miles lol

We are about to be like Cuba soon so I don't care if it's older in fact I much prefer that.

Screw cars after like 2008. They're junk.

Never seen a volvo with more than say 150K. But then I haven't seen hardly any in my entire life. WHY would you buy some foreign abstract pos car in the first place? Because parts are readily available? Because everyone knows how to work on them? Because replacement parts are cheap? Many Toyotas are made in US and last 400k miles with good maintenence. And parts are widely available. Sorry for your pos car, buy a Toyota next time and ya.... before 2008.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 84074538

I also love Toyota.

No offense but some dude on the internet with nothing to back it up won't change my mind on P80 Volvo's.

You're literally the first person I've ever heard not like this car.

They're not the same company anymore and are pushing electric vehicles now but this model in specific is extremely highly rated all around.

Seriously what are you talking about you haven't seen them pass 150k? Most I see are at around 300k right now of this same year.

Zero noise at all.

Drove it about 200 miles today.

This happened after it sat for a bit before I drove home.

Barely didn't make it back...

Ehh I'm genuinely curious now how bad the damage might be.

My terrible error of trying to crank the engine when it gave code p0339 crank sensor error. Big big oops.

I'm kinda in shock this shit happens in the most strange of times.

It's been chaotic energy lately.
 Quoting: eyeDR3

You'd be a fool to scrap it without pulling the head for a look.

Or for fifty dollars or less buy an endoscope and peek through the spark plug hole on the cylinder with no compression.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 84065887

I will not. I really like this car and it would actually even be worth putting another engine in it's in such good shape.

Interior is fantastic, body is definitely "good" but not great. Has great new Bilstein shocks and struts I did earlier this year. Still good life on tires.

I'm more worried about work and transportation.

This outta be fun.
 Quoting: eyeDR3

OOOOOOH It has a nice interior... well! That helps... norespect
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 84074538

Some people with cars man...

Yes, it helps. Duh?

If the car is super nice all around and just needs engine work why throw it away? That's just laziness! Laziness is what costs money.

What happened was the power steering pump reservoir to pump hose was rubbing against the serpentine belt right at the power steering pump, so I pulled it up and zip tied it and that seemed to work. Otherwise it would soon have sprayed power steering fluid everywhere.

The hose apparently was putting pressure on the timing cover which allowed the cam sprockets to rub the cover to a melting point. This in turn must have made the belt slip off of the tensioner pulley.

I just lost power, pulled over and made one potentially very expensive mistake... I tried to start the car. I could hear that belt sound and immediately stopped. Code was p0339 but upon visual inspection the belt is bent out at the tensioner. It was alarmingly loose but still on gears...

I dunno... It's so weird. Everyone complements this car lately. I love this car... Then this happens.

OMG the thought of a new car is terrifying right now and I simply don't have that money right now...

Any prayer is certainly appreciated.

Sigh.

That happened to me on my pickup. Had to replace the water pump, timing belt and tensioner pulley and spring, along with gasket, thermostat while in there....and coolant.

It was about $140.00 for a kit to do it. plus extra for the other items I listed. Toyota 3vze non interference engine.

My current issue on my pick up now, is that I had a corroded tail light so my turn signals were not working. Gonna do timing and water pump first and use a scope to see down in the cylinders.

I mean COME on. Give me examples of a reliable car! Can't wait to laugh.

Chevrolet is fucking garbage as are most (most) Ford's. Toyotas are freaking awesome but night be going downhill a bit. Late 90s and early 2000s Toyota are nothing short of marvelous.

Volvo has been pretty reliable and especially safe also. A little tank.

Any Chevy I've had has been insufferable. Cavalier, Malibu... Now the old g20 from 1983 was pretty awesome but still not that reliable or economical.

This car handles great, has a great interior for car camping and hauling things and I'm telling you constantly gets praise. That part cracks me up too trust me, it's not a sports car but it gets constant compliments. I think it looks pretty cool. Pretty punchy for a 5 cylinder.

If I could have my dream car I'd have a Tacoma or 4runner. I love them. Early to late 2000s for the Tacoma and 99 to 2007 for 4runner.

has happened to me before, much depends on whether your engine books at an interference spec or non interference, meaning the valves open at tdc can touch the piston top or not. if so, the pistons are probably ok but you might need the cylinder head rebuilt and valves replaced in addition to a replacement timing belt as well as fixing the original problem that caused it all to start with good luck to you

Didn't mean to be rude dude. But those are facts. I paid 4k for my F=150 in 06 and it is 4x4 and has EVERY available factory option too. I bought my Dodge at a yard sale for 1200 bux and put 2k into it. My tacoma in similar condition used is about 4500. The 4 runner is about 4500 too. Shop around, I am the king of getting good deals because I refuse to overpay for anything.

I had one snap in a volvo 5 cylinder turbo going 40 on a off ramp to another highway. 2 days before I was going to do the belt...had all the parts on the shelf. Long story short it didn’t damage the piston/cylinder. Head was junk. Couldn’t find a replacement either. Cheapest option was 2500 for a used motor shipped in. Then happened across a head for $75. You will need a lot of misc parts along the way. Get a new harmonic balancer at your mileage. Make sure you check the thin metal ring Behind it for warping.

Buy a new serpentine belt and tensioner. That tensioner is what caused it to fail. They ‘hop’ and it’ll vibrate the power steering pump good until you have your problem. Also when you do the timing belt. Do all the tensioners. Those are suppose to be done every 140k, Just belt every 70k.

Good luck. Those motors and their variants are built pretty well. Btw while you have the belt off replace your oil seals, if they aren’t leaking they will ‘soon’. If you want to save some money look for a victor reinz gasket/seal kit. They’re good quality, will last, and they are pretty cheap. It should have oddball stuff like injector orings and other little things that will be needed along the way.

I agree. You belt came off this popped the error codes.

Diagnostic code P0339 OBDII indicates that the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) has found an erratic or intermittent voltage signal from the Crank Position Sensor (CKP)

And since your in there replacing the belt and etc stuff might as well replace the simple cheap other things. When I have to fix something I also see what gaskets, seals, boots, rings, greased, etc are around that I can get to. Don't go crazy and spend alot of money, but little things for a couple of bucks will save you hundreds of dollars.
