Which is better for everyday carry?

9mm. Smaller package. You will get tired of carrying a larger caliber handgun for concealment. 9mm has higher capacity and for those saying if you can't stop a person with a .45 then you aren't thinking if there are multiple assailants moving and running that would require more ammo.

ROFL to all the armchair armorers and ballistic BS in this thread...Kinda cute tho, good to see more and more ppl armed, and exercising their rights.

FBI did do a huge study in the 80s after an embarrassing loss in a long gunfight. Look it up yourself. The results of that was, we'll to make a long story short the outcome was 40S&W. You see the FBI decided that 38 sp and 9mm were NOT enough to do the job, and thus created the 10mm.

But but the girly man agents and actual girls couldnt seem to qualify with the manly 10mm, so as a solution the casing was shortened and grains of the good stuff removed and voila! Enter 40 Short and Wimpy lol.

You're welcome.

They went back to 9mm years ago because 9mm with modern ammo is superior in every way. Extensive ballistics tests show no difference between 9mm and .45

Look up the Glock 19M and Glock 17M

This is just a stupid comment because they also have “modern ammo” for the .45. You can’t possibly say something that is smaller and lighter and holds less powder has the same ballistics as a bullet that is significantly heavier and holds more powder. It’s physics. You don’t hunt a deer with 9mm but you can with a .45.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 80788445

You thought my comment was dumb yet you doubled down with an even dumber comment? The irony is so thick you can cut it with a knife LOL.

Humans are not deer.
9mm has more velocity, excellent expansion, cheaper to train with, higher capacity, less recoil so you can get on target faster, and a much wider variety of handguns and PCC’s to choose from.

Pretty stupid to buy a .45 over a 9mm nowadays. Your 1911 isn’t the end all be all gramps. If you like it then good for you, but your fudd caliber has gone out of style.

Re: .45 or 9mm Everyday Carry, Self Preservation
The one you will carry is best. A super nice steel 1911 with gorgeous checkered wood grips is worthless if you leave it in the glove box because its too big or heavy for what you're wearing today. A plastic 9 is more versatile and comfortable in shorts. While it is true a 9hp may expand, A 45 never shrinks. The true power depends on the round since Force=mass x velocity squared. The 45 may double the mass but the 9+p can have nearly twice the velocity which gets squared. If you are limited to only 1, then 9mm is the most versatile. For full disclosure my compromise is a 9mm bullet powered by a 40cal case (aka 357sig).

I’m 6,3 212 lbs and ccw a full size 1911 10mm with a sure fire 300xu rail mounted light. I wear it with under armor workout shorts and a fitted or unfitted t shirt all the time. The 1911 is an extremely slim handle, slimmer than some most double stack compacts. The only difference is barrel length which is an absolute non factor. If you have a problem with weight in the form of extra ounces you shouldn’t carry at all. Plus weigh up a 15 round mag vs 7. Almost non factor. My XD slim has the same handle size of my 1911 and one of the smallest semiautomatics. But the 1911 is more accurate due to the weight up front.

I believe the .22 caliber has killed more people than all other calibers combined

I’m picking up a Ruger LCP in .22 to have while i am on my nightly run, i would much rather have my Glock 19 or even my Glock 21 , but .22 is much better than pepper spray

A 45 has more ballistic shock and that is ALL that counts. Nobody cares about how fast your 9mm is going. A 45 will have better expansion fact because it’s bigger. A lot of people don’t have a budget like you so money is not a factor when you have a $4000 1911. Recoil in a steel 1911 .45 is likely identical IF NOT LESS compared to a .9mm with that higher velocity due to more charge plastic gun. If you have a well built 1911 you really don’t care about any other crappy $500 gun selection.

9mm is generally for poor people because people shooting it aren’t shooting it out of a $4000 custom weapon.

Go to a range and try out as many as you can. You'll know it when you find the "one".

Long time ago I used to carry a 32 special. But I switched to a 1911 over 20 years ago when I was at the range with a buddy who had one. I loved it so much that he sold it to me. Been my main "squeeze" ever since.

My friend however prefers his Ruger for whatever reason. I don't judge him for it.

Go to the range. Try out as many as you can. You'll find the one that just "feels" right.

Legions are very nice and heavy. But heave means accurate. People here actually believe tiny plastic sub compact 9mm’s have less recoil than bigger caliber steel guns and they can get on target faster..

It’s so funny.

There’s no way you’re not trolling lol. Most of America isn’t going to daily carry a $4000 gun around. Even if they can afford one they aren’t using it for their self defense gun. It’s a range toy or for competitions. If you have to use your gun for self defense, you’ll most likely never see it again. It’ll be in an evidence locker until you’re dead. That’s why people aren’t spending more than $500-$700 on their daily carry gun. It’s a throwaway tool.

Also you’re talking about a heavy ass bulky, steel 1911. You conceal carrying that to the grocery store with you or to work or anywhere else? I can stick a 10+ round small and lightweight Sig P365, Springfield Hellcat, Shield Plus, Taurus GX4, Glock 26, Glock 43X or numerous other small micro 9mm in my beach shorts and no one would know the wiser.

You can larp as Billy badass bewmur of the week with your $4000 custom 1911 but unless you’re conceal carrying it with you everywhere you go then it’s useless.

How do you know OP isn’t a woman or someone of average height? Not everyone is like you. Not everyone wants to throw away thousands of dollars on a gun when a $500 polymer 9mm is just as accurate and effective.

The majority of US military and law enforcement uses Glock, Sig and Smith & Wesson. I guess they’re all garbage and they don’t know anything huh?

i like a 45 next to the bed. id carry either but id lean towards the 9 for the superior capacity. you normally get 6 or more extra rounds in the same size gun 45 vs 9. 6 more rounds of 9 with a good bullet like a hornady xtp is nice to have.

At least 10 rounds plus one or two spare mags seems to be the gold standard nowadays. Your size plus what your wearing determines what you can get away with concealing without printing (your gun being noticeable through your clothes).

Here’s some youtube channels you can skim through to help narrow down what you might want. When you have a few in mind, you should visit a gun range and rent all the ones you’re deciding between to see what you like best.

I open carry a Glock 21 .45.

Rounds?

4 mags @ 13 +p rounds each ttl 52 rds.

Then the back up is a concealed carry 1911 .45

4 mags @ 8 +p each ttl 32 rds.

52+32=84

Why carry concealed?

Re: .45 or 9mm Everyday Carry, Self Preservation
I open carry a Glock 21 .45.

Rounds?

4 mags @ 13 +p rounds each ttl 52 rds.

Then the back up is a concealed carry 1911 .45

4 mags @ 8 +p each ttl 32 rds.

52+32=84

Why carry concealed?

a friend of mine was shot three times in the back for his .357 magnum while open carrying. he lived.
