Re: .45 or 9mm Everyday Carry, Self Preservation
The difference between 9mm +P ammo and 45ACP is negligible; I'd prefer to have the extra rounds because I don't get to practice very often.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 83813785

Your likely looking at FPS for your comparison when the difference is in bullet weight and energy. Ballistic shock is what liquefies your organs making that massive wound cavity. Then there is also 45+p. I consider a 9mm a lot like a .556 in the ar platform. Fast, penetrates but takes time to stop. There is a reason police have to shoot someone 15 times to stop them.

I would be happy with a .22 over nothing, so whatever it is that will make you carry daily
 Quoting: Justsayno

I wouldn't hesitate to grab my ruger 10/22 if it's all I had by me.

25 rounds of .22 lr center of mass is going to end badly.

Re: .45 or 9mm Everyday Carry, Self Preservation
For a new guy, you need a lot of practice, and 45 is double in price vs 9mm.
Harder to control, especially under stress.
You want something that your wife and kids can use too.
Ignore the "mine is bigger than yours" crowd. A 9mm relatively well placed bullet is better than a 45 miss, and if needed you can shoot 2 more times fast.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 84004559

I think a full size 1911 is significantly easier to control than any of those small plastic 9mm’s. The worst s&w j frame scandium .357.

They are made for large game like bears.

Yes I have shot one.

Doesn’t compare to the S&W scandium j frame in .357. A lot of Women carry them ind I would rather shoot a the heavy 500. The j frame will make my hand bleed.

ROFL to all the armchair armorers and ballistic BS in this thread...Kinda cute tho, good to see more and more ppl armed, and exercising their rights.

FBI did do a huge study in the 80s after an embarrassing loss in a long gunfight. Look it up yourself. The results of that was, we'll to make a long story short the outcome was 40S&W. You see the FBI decided that 38 sp and 9mm were NOT enough to do the job, and thus created the 10mm.

But but the girly man agents and actual girls couldnt seem to qualify with the manly 10mm, so as a solution the casing was shortened and grains of the good stuff removed and voila! Enter 40 Short and Wimpy lol.

You're welcome.

I am not looking for an offensive handgun. I am interested in something I can have around all the time to defend my family and myself. I hope to never have to use it to defend myself, but if I do I want it to be close at hand and work.

Re: .45 or 9mm Everyday Carry, Self Preservation
Each to their own. I have seen dozens and dozens of people shot. I can not recall a single incident of someone getting shot with a .45 in the head or torso that lived. Most that get shot with a 9mm survive. If you pull your gun for protection and have to use it. The offender is most likely going to retreat especially if shot, so either caliber will work for that purpose. If you want the person dead though it’s .45 caliber all the way. I have both and like both. For competition shooting I would go 9mm, less recoil, higher capacity and smooth as silk. If a bear or human was trying to kill me. It’s no question I would want a .45. The blood pumped out of .45 hole is way more than a 9mm which causes faster blood pressure drop which cause loss of conscious and then death. FBI study is a joke. If anyone is citing FBI studies and believes in the FBI today, I can’t help them.

That really doesn't make any sense and I'd like to see the actual numbers. If a 9mm HP hits a vital organ it's just as likley to cause death as a .45. Expansion is better on most 9mm HP too.

They went back to 9mm years ago because 9mm with modern ammo is superior in every way. Extensive ballistics tests show no difference between 9mm and .45

From what I know from friends.
The Sig P365 is known to jam. Fix is sanding down something, not sure. Just look into that one more. This was years ago so may be fixed now.
Where as another friends Sig P226 has never failed or jammed, even after lots of firing and the slide smoking, great arm.
Both were 9mm

I've served in a military police force, and we were taught to hit terrorists with two 9mm in the chest then one in the head to confirm kill. This means, that one 9mm is not enough to kill someone, especially someone high on drugs or jihad. 45 is enough. Just carry an extra mag.

In that case remember that the only thing your pistol is actually good for is to fight your way to your rifle.

Get yourself a good 9 and an AR.

LMAO.

You put two rounds center of mass regardless of the caliber.

What are they teaching you military people these days?

Hell, police are taught to keep firing until the suspect is non responsive.

All handguns and all guns period are offensive to liberals. Don’t worry about being offensive. Just get what’s right for you. 9mm works for most as a good all around self defense caliber.

If you plan to use a rifle for self defense such as an AR15 or an AK then invest in a good suppressor to go with it. If you ever have to shoot your rifle indoors, you and your entire family will have permanent hearing loss if it’s unsupressed. Rifles are way way louder than a handgun.

This is just a stupid comment because they also have “modern ammo” for the .45. You can’t possibly say something that is smaller and lighter and holds less powder has the same ballistics as a bullet that is significantly heavier and holds more powder. It’s physics. You don’t hunt a deer with 9mm but you can with a .45.

Re: .45 or 9mm Everyday Carry, Self Preservation
The one you will carry is best. A super nice steel 1911 with gorgeous checkered wood grips is worthless if you leave it in the glove box because its too big or heavy for what you're wearing today. A plastic 9 is more versatile and comfortable in shorts. While it is true a 9hp may expand, A 45 never shrinks. The true power depends on the round since Force=mass x velocity squared. The 45 may double the mass but the 9+p can have nearly twice the velocity which gets squared. If you are limited to only 1, then 9mm is the most versatile. For full disclosure my compromise is a 9mm bullet powered by a 40cal case (aka 357sig).
