Villages Florida - Resident says HOA in The Villages is suing her for displaying cross, lawn ornaments

Had a neighbor who installed a story tall light up rosary on the side of their garage which faced my living room window. Yes I complained to them but the assholes refused to move it to a place where they had to look at the ghastly thing. Lit up, all year round.

When I buy a home, it will be in a neighborhood where there is no HOA. There's no way I'm going to pay dues to some boss organization that tells me what I can and can't do with my own property. To hell with that.

I hate this is happening but IMO this is only getting press because its a Cross. If it was a pink flamingo and the HOA rules say nothing in the yard then you can't have anything in the yard and that pink flamingo would be removed or a fine would be set and would never be reported to the news. Same thing if a HOA says no flags then no flags...

I live in a resort area with many, many HOA places I could live and I did live in a restricted neighborhood with a HOA at first. Yes the HOA was a problem. I moved out because I had a utility trailer and my HOA rules said no utility trailers.

I now live in a commercial area on a busy street with a business as my neighbor. Its a choice, I could choose to live in a place like the Villages on a nice pond or lake with the perks of HOA cookouts, a community pool, lots of golf etc but these places have rules and if you don't like the rules buy a home like I did.

When it comes to HOA rules, the law etc if you buy in a place that does not allow a pink flamingo in the yard you may have an issue with the Cross.

Move to the country with no HOA and have a large lighted Cross if its important to a homeowner. I never understood people who buy in a HOA then don't want to follow those HOA rules that were in place when the property was purchased.

One thing you can count on if one buys in ANY HOA. You at some point WILL have a HOA Karen that will notice than one little thing you are doing that is against the HOA rules.
Only a matter of time as Karen WILL see it and that Karen will report you!

I am sure that if they go through the neighborhood they will find hundreds of ornaments of one type or another. Especially, target the board. Then, file a suit for discrimination on religious grounds. They can't ignore all the other stuff if they come down on her for a cross.

Then, take the cross(es) and make them into plant supports. Landscaping is acceptable.

If you don't like being told what to do and don't mind what your neighbors do then do not join an HOA.

In a city or suburb this includes junked out appliances on the yard and grass 3' tall and barking dogs and junk cars and loud music and houses in disrepair and that sort of thing. Some people were raised that way and don't mind that sort of lifestyle.

If the look of your entire neighborhood is important to you and you want someone to control how you and your neighbors act then join an HOA.

This includes arbitrary rules and enforcement and neurotic people that run another layer of quasi-government that will righteously and non-righteously piss you off from time to time.


It is that simple - they both have advantages and drawbacks. But one thing for certain - if you see a neighborhood with an HOA bordering one that isn't you will immediately know which one is and which one isn't. It is night and day difference in how they look.
