Five Steps to Breaking the Drama Triangle

We’ve all got our routines and habits, some of which are useful in the workplace, others, well, less so. An interesting (but totally unhelpful) pattern that many of us fall into is the Drama Triangle.

The Drama Triangle, a practical interpretation of transactional analysis developed by Stephen Karpman, assumes that, at least some of the time, we’re playing less-than-fantastic versions of ourselves with most of the people with whom we interact.

When this happens, Karpman says, we’re bouncing around between three archetypal roles — Victim, Persecutor, and Rescuer — each one as unhelpful and dysfunctional as the other.

It’s easy to think of people at work who fall into each of these categories. Picture them: the colleague who feels that everything is unfair (Victim), the arrogant one who often takes over everything (Persecutor), and the hero who tries to fix every stressful situation (Rescuer).
Chances are, you can think of instances where you too played these roles, even though you probably tend to favor one over the others.

The reality is you’ll probably continue to fall into this role-playing pattern; but there are a few things you can do to break the cycle quickly so that whatever you’re confronting can get done more efficiently, without the aggravation that comes with the Drama Triangle:

I'm reflecting upon this teaching as well... obviously, I posted it on GLP!

I sat in a workshop where a teacher went pretty deep into this one... It's amazing how true it is.... and of course, the 90% will deny that they're trapped in it. :-)

Sometimes I think about how one can be victims to structures, not just relationships with other human beings.

For instance one can feel victim to a corrupt system rather than taking responsibility in generating change at the causal level of said corrupt system......

Something I did quite a while ago; I stopped allowing family to manipulate my actions/feelings based on guilt and/or obligations.

This is where the vast majority of humanity resides.

Victims.

Sometimes perpetrators or heroes..

But mostly..

VICTIMS....

We all rightly get what life serves to us through our right livelihood, or poor livelihood.

It's a tough lesson, I know first hand.

When one has a bad harvest in life through one's poor inner and outer metaphorical gardening, it's painful... But... who's to blame??

You wouldn't want to... look in the mirror or anything....

And (most of us) don't... Because it's hard fucking work.

maybe true for some, but there are real parasites trying to destroy the world, and you cant think them away with new age bullshit. they mean business and reality is coming for us all.

You need to give credit where credit is due out of simple logic and reasoning.

It doesn't mean you have to worship hero, victim, and persecutor. But it does mean you should be sensible about what you are doing, and still have some compassion.

It's a legit approach to self-healing.

You cannot cause change out there when you're ailed within.

If you try to change the outer before achieving a certain degree of balance within, you probably won't get very far.

It's all about inner subtle work. Inner alchemical transformation.

Wise people tried to help us out in this regard.

How many have taken heed to the teachings?

yeah, I'm going to stop you right here. You are in no position to tell someone else about their 'poor metaphorical gardening' or to tell people why things are happening to them. This new age bullshit might have worked in the past, but some of us are graduating into a much more sensible and productive form of social interaction.

I hear that.

The point this approach is trying make is the graduation from the triangle into full self-responsibility whereby one is no longer operating in any of these three roles.

The self-realized is not a victim. Doesn't need to be a hero. And has no need to play power games.

And if one cannot find the humility to acknowledge that their are others in life more refined then they... this one will remain stuck.

Meanwhile most of us are still ripping through the hamster wheel trying to get a bite of that cheese we will never get until we transcend it.
