Ive been lurking in the shadows for 12 years. This thread is what motivated me to start an accnt and get involved. Coincidentally enough I am in the same boat as OP. Watched it for years, knew people that made it out and some that didnt. As one poster has said the dumb ones will lose out. So for as much homework as I have done and am still doing, I decided a community chat with like minded people that understand the potential before us would be a little more beneficial than not. You (OP) and I actually have just jumped on board, As I have actually over the past month have put a total of $10k into the crypto market. I have also dedicated another 3k to building a mining PC to join a mining pool of some sort. <---- This is still a work in progress, Ill be happy to share my build with anyone thats interested. Anyways I look forward to all the information hopefully shared on this thread. I will bring what I can to bring information, outlook and of course my opinion. Most of my investment has been in BTC, I bought all of my BTC between 1300-1700 dollars a coin. At the moment I dont feel comfortable being a day trader although I see the potential , I just dont have enough of a portfolio built that I can play just yet. I have traded some BTC for long term(most of my money sits in BTC) from large amount to smallest of alt coins: LTC / ETH / XRP / GOLEM / ARDOR & NXT with a short term on ETC for hopefully some short term payout when i bought at 5 dollars coin. Alright im outta here, gotta go water my plants over at my brothers place. Any input or constructive criticism would be greatly appreciated. (OP) User ID: 71582760 Netherlands 05/28/2017 08:46 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I'm completely new to all of this. I've gone as far as opening accounts on Kraken, and Coinbase. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 74959096 Coinbase is where I intend to purchase my first btc, unless someone can point me in a better direction. So far my experience with coinbase has beendecent, but their ID verification is annoying. Had to upload pics of my id several times before they'd give me verification. So far I've managed to link my debit card, but the fee for purchasing crypto with a debit card is 3.99%. This adds about $20 to the price of 1 whole bitcoin. Coinbase fee for bank transfers is better at 1.49%. This is the option I'm planning to use. ID verification for bank transfers require some additional steps like giving them your bank account and routing numbers. Watch out for Coinbase. I am reading mixed reviews on it. One major drawback which applies to all online wallets is that the wallet is in their possession, and they can freeze you out. I will use an offline wallet, both because I want to stay in control and for security purposes. The fees can be pretty high, indeed. Not just on your purchase, but also on your withdrawals. Can't avoid the fees completely, but there are better offers out there. What do you think of bitstamp? (I'm interested in following along on your thread...especially if you decide to go for XRP...as I'm new to cryptos, but it ... XRP ... has my attention) Similar to Coinbase, Bitstamp has had its issues. They got hacked and there are cases where people got locked out of their funds. But I think that is to be expected considering the nature of the business. It's an online wallet and they are in control. I will not use an online wallet for large investments. I use a desktop wallet. |

(OP) User ID: 71582760 Netherlands 05/28/2017 08:53 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | In the beginning when bitcoin was not heard of I tried mining it and after running a night I got exactly 98 bitcoins. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 74975901 I deleted them because nobody was using them, you could do nothing with them. It was just a nice experiment. I can't give a rats ass, I would delete them right now because it is a farce, a scam and those with many bitcoins, good luck cashing them, the irs will find you, that is why they allow bitcoins, for the reaping when you cash out. I am glad you don't feel remorse. Regarding the IRS. I assume profits from cryptocurrency investments have to be reported like any other investments. Good point, though. Something I need to look into. Here's a little inside baseball on bitcoins and the IRS. Now, the IRS can pass any rule they damn well like, not having to base it on reality or logic, so this may not matter to them. However, this is a fact: Every bitcoin transaction, with the exception of selling bitcoins you mine yourself (which the IRS as zero ability to determine), is buying or selling of used goods. That't right. Bitcoin is not income. And it's as taxable as selling used clothing, that is, not at all. Interesting. So, since it is considered goods in the US, would that mean that it was included at the moment you purchased a bitcoin from an exchange? I will check out how it works over here in NL, but your explanation makes sense so the same might apply over here. |

I have seen people recommend decred (sp) spinoff by people involved in bitcoin. have you heard of it and thoughts? Glad you stopped by. (OP) User ID: 71582760 Netherlands 05/28/2017 09:27 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | You need to be aware that there are problems on the BTC horizon. Quoting: artMan The system only handles some 7 transactions per second, which is way to little. The way to make it work, is to raise the transaction costs constantly to a level where people simply refrain from doing transactions. There are improvements on the way, but according to the design of BTC, 95% of the network needs to agree on an improvement for it to take hold. This has proven to be impossible on BTC and there is a stalemate since 2 years. Without this improvement, the fees are exploding with 1200% per year. We can possibly see $10 transaction-fees within a year. Last news couple of days ago, is that they will try to do a coup and change BTC even without the 95% support. This will require a hard fork, and we could possibly end up with two parallel bitcoin networks. BTC might overcome these problems, but there are other coins that already are way passed these issues. Also, BTC uses electricity for several millions of dollars each day, just to crunch numbers, which is not really necessary. There are other chains that do not require this enormous amount of electricity. Because of this, BTC has gone from being 85% of the cryptocurrency space to 50% in a couple of months. That is very interesting. I will definitely investigate that further. Thanks for the tip. Yesterday I bumped into this video on some of what you touched upon. |
