Ionic versus colloidal silver solution.
Ionic silver is just the raw product after electrolysis. Colloidal silver has been reduced to a particulate suspension versus ionic/atomic. I read a study that showed that ionic silver is much more effective as an antimicrobial.

Any GLP experiences here with both? Which was more effective for you?

Re: Ionic versus colloidal silver solution.
I've used ionic silver to kill mold in a bathroom shower.
With bleach, the mold would come back.
One time with home-made ionic silver and the mold never came back.

I use colloidal silver as a medicine.
It's kind of pricey, but not compared to being sick and using pharmacy drugs.
I've found it to be an awesome anti-bacterial/anti-viral.
It also works great on burns.

I know that ionic silver also kills algae in pools quite effectively.

Ionic silver is also safe for medicinal use. Its just that the silver is ionic (smallest particle solution obviously). Colloidal particles much bigger.

Nope.
You have it completely backwards.

A colloid is suspended in an aqueous solution and typically has a sub 100 nano-metre size.
It is small enough to pass through the most cellular walls.

An ionic solution typically has FAR larger particles and usually silver proteins and silver salts.
Ionic silver can cause Argyria (from prolonged contact with or ingestion of silver salts. Argyria is characterized by gray to gray-black staining of the skin.)
Not so with colloids.
We all breathe the same air.

Re: Ionic versus colloidal silver solution.
Yep, Ionic considered better for topical wounds, disinfecting etc.

Colloidal best for internal use - due to its smaller particle size and therefore body able to flush out excess. (Instead of getting stuck in tissues and causing a grey tinge to the skin which larger particle sizes can do!)

Sadly, many companies call their silver 'colloidal' when in fact it's ionic silver...

I would use ionic short-term internally for an acute case of infection or flu, if it was all i had, but would not use it long-term.

Backwards?

A silver ion is a positively charged silver atom. You cannot get any smaller than 1 silver atom. When you push charge through 2 silver electrodes, silver ions are released into the water, not tiny chunks of metal. A silver colloid is a clump of silver atoms, therefor obviously a larger particulate. Colloidal silver is produced from ionic silver made from electrolysis using a reducing agent. The reducing agent (and sometimes along with heat) will cause the silver ions to clump together.

Re: Ionic versus colloidal silver solution.
Chronic sinusitis and digestive suffrage here. I'm pretty confused by the wide range of products, forms, and concentrations of CS available. I'd really like to try it. If it works, I'd consider making my own. In the meantime, is the following product familiar at all? The manufacturer blows a lot of smoke up their own ass, but they seem pretty convincing:

ACS 200 Extra Strength 1oz Nasal Spray 1 oz by Results RNA

"Silver has been used for thousands of years as a natural antibiotic. In fact, some say that the royalty were protected from the great plague because of the silver they consumed due to their utensils being made of silver.

Silver is an organic compound found naturally within the body and nature in small amounts. Colloidal silver is produced by suspending tiny nanoparticles of silver within a solution. Silver acts as a powerful broad-spectrum antimicrobial and it is thought to kill bacteria on contact. As part of the respiratory system, the nasal passages are your first line of defense against invading bacteria and viruses, and using silver as an antibacterial nasal spray can therefore be highly beneficial for protecting your body."

ACS 200 Extra Strength 1oz Nasal Spray

"The ACS Extra Strength nasal spray was formulated to take advantage of the impressive qualities of colloidal silver to help support your immune system. It has an impressive 200 parts per million of silver to potentially fight the effects of viruses and bacteria."

If CS is introduced in the form of a nasal spray, will enough of it be absorbed into the bloodstream to make a difference elsewhere? Will the liver filter the colloidal material before it has any effect on the digestive system? What to do otherwise, drink it?

So basically in a nutshell Ionic is best for topical use like cuts, burns, as eye/ear drops for infections.

Colloidal is best if your taking it orally to boost immune system, nasal spray for sinus, drink or drops under the tongue try to kill off a cold/flu, etc..

Enough of this nonsense argument over colloidal versus ionic silver. What is an ion? An ion is a single atom of an element that is either missing (positive charge) or has an excess (negative charge) of one or more electrons. A single atom of a substance is still of that substance. Anyone who can argue against this is either trying hard to sell you something or sadly misinformed. A few minutes with Google will clear up the matter. Search “what is an atom? What is a particle? What is an element?” It is that simple.

Metal atoms form positive ions, while non-metal atoms form negative ions. The strong electrostatic forces of attraction between oppositely charged ions are called ionic bonds.

Re: Ionic versus colloidal silver solution.
So let's call what I make "silver water".

I take 2 99.99% pure silver wires, suspend them parallel vertically in a straight sided glass vase. The are about 1.5 inches apart. Then I pass dc at 28 volts to the wires, which are suspended in distilled water.

30 minutes, stop, clean wires, 30 minutes, done.

Now, it still looks like water. Until you shine a laser pointer into the water and observe from the side. You can see tiny flecks in the laser light. That is the silver.

Now, some of that is ionic. That's the Itty bitty tiniest of bits. You'll still get an occasional larger piece drift by.

But, if you let the process run, you get bigger and bigger colloids of the silver, the wires get way black, and eventually the whole shitshow turns kind of brown. At this stage I consider it "burned" and dump it.

No visine, no salt, no yellow color. Just water with tiny bits of silver.

It seems to kill all the bad stuff. My main problem is that once you give it to cats, they are like "fuck plain water", and will happily meow at 3am if they run low.

Re: Ionic versus colloidal silver solution.

It has been some 30 years since I began suggesting the use of current limiting and a laser pointer in making colloidal silver. Before that time, the accepted method was using two silver coins, three nine-volt batteries, and a dash of salt. A watchful eye to stop the process when it had a yellow tint was essential. The trick was to stop the process before the water turned into black gunk. At this time, a man who claimed he was a retired oncologist selling vitamin supplements introduced the use of a fish tank bubbler. That worked to the extent that it prevented the runaway condition that caused the three nine volts’ problems. Electricity cannot flow through an air bubble, so the current path was repeatedly interrupted by the flow of bubbles between the electrodes. This guy became very popular and sold many people a kind of subscription for vitamins and made some money. I understand that he was later arrested and jailed for mail fraud. This method is still prevalent as it does work, at least to the extent of preventing the rapid formation of black sludge. To give him credit, I think he also told people not to use salt. This method was not as quick as the three nine volts, which meant that it took more time, but people didn’t mind so much because they could always watch the bubbles.
There is a problem with this. As there is no current limiting device, i.e., “resistor” in the circuit, the current between bubbles will not be limited. The particles leaving the silver anode will be in relatively large chunks. The scattering effect of coherent light causes the laser line formed in the solution. The amount of light reflected is not directly proportional to the size of the particle. For instance, a particle 10 nm in size will only reflect 1/1000 the amount of light as a particle 100 nm in size. Therefore, using this method to determine when to stop the process will cause the process to end when a relatively small number of relatively large particles are in solution, which is just the opposite of what we want.
I hope everyone keeps experimenting and keeps an open mind on improving the process. Those of you who are using bubblers and have a TDS meter would do well to check whether or not the bubblers are adding oxygen to your water, yielding you a false indication of silver PPM. To do this, run your bubbler for the same length of time without silver. Take a reading of ppm. It is from carbon dioxide and oxygen.

Ionic silver is comprised of silver atoms that are missing an electron. This allows it to combine with other substances to produce compounds like silver chloride, which is insoluble in the body.

Ionic silver is limited in its bio-availability.

You want true colloidal silver, which (if honestly produced) is nano-particles of silver that are comprised of complete silver atoms. They do not combine with other elements to form compounds.

The low-voltage home silver rod kits are incapable of producing true colloidal silver.

We have seen one study after another for this or that latest silver nanoparticle. All produced by some unique process that is patented. All of these studies show the wonderful effects of their particular substance against infectious agents. I have believed that the effectiveness of these various wonderful new nanosilver concoctions was that once they enter our body, they eventually come into contact with the oxygen, resulting in the release of silver ions. Single silver’ ions with a negative charge. Here is a report that exposes the entire scam:

[link to www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov (secure)]

I quote from the “Summary and Conclusions.”
“We presented the similarities and differences in the mode of silver action on Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. We noticed a gap in knowledge about the molecular mechanism of bacteria, both Gram-positive and Gram-negative, to silver nanoparticles. If we assume that silver nanoparticles are silver ions source, it is possible that the molecular mechanism of bacterial resistance is analogue to mechanism described for Ag+. If there is another way of antibacterial toxicity of silver nanoparticles, it is likely that different mechanisms of resistance to silver nanoparticle exist, for both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. The variety of silver nanoforms causes that every product with silver nanoparticles should be considered separately as a compound with different physico-chemical properties, different mode of action and different mechanisms of resistance.”

[link to theartofmakingcolloidalsilver.com (secure)]
So the question I ask is if silver ions are more effective at eliminating bacteria than silver nanoparticles, why is all this time and money being spent on developing so many different nanoparticles?
You can’t patent silver ions. Moreover, everybody can make their own.
Money money money.
