Tell them that the company you work for (a new job you got) installed a different internet service for your work, and you can't share it or you'll get into trouble with work.

You don't want the liability of sharing with that person - they may be allowing uploads of pirated software, music, movies, etc. Not good.

I personally don't allow others to use my internet. If they get a virus, which is pretty likely and your ip ends up on someones bot net, you are shut down.

"It's all zeroes." I say... "can't remember how many. Just keep trying."

Friend of mine changed his Wi-Fi name to "FBI Surveillance Van 5". Keeps people on their toes.

You could tell them you were contacted by the ISP provider who told you they noticed a suspicious increase in usage and asked if you were sharing.

I wouldn't put up with that.

If you don't want to just be honest with the person which is the easy thing to do. Just change the password and set your network to invisible tell him you turned it off because of the high bills.

Easy way to deal with outsiders.

If you hadn’t already shut down your router, this is what you could have done.

Set the original router to not broadcast, and set it to a different channel.
Put a second router in place and set it to the original SSID channel and PW.

Set second router to redirect all DNS lookups to GLP, or some other website.
No mater what they enter, or what link they click on, it will keep coming back to GLP.

They will spend hours wondering what the heck is wrong with their computer. When they come to your door, just throw up your hands and look stupid. They will give up after a while and go elsewhere..

Another option would be to set up a server in your house connected to the router with a website that they would be directed to no mater what they enter. You can get very creative with how you mess with them.

Or keep track of what websites they visit on a daily basis. Mirror those to your server in your house. Let them see the real facebook and stuff, but redirect all the other news sites and stuff they visit. They will keep checking the websites for weeks wondering why nothing new is being posted, or there is no new news on the headlines. You can literally keep them running around in circles for weeks on end.

I spend about the same as you, and I wouldn't share my connection. I'd just tell them that you can no longer afford it and that you need your entire bandwidth. Then hardwire all your devices to the router and disable your wifi. It's bad for your health to have this microwave soup all around you anyway, and it's a security risk - even the best wifi security can be cracked using tools from the net.

Just tell them that you won't be using wifi anymore, and don't.

It takes a lot of nerve to be knocking on the door in the middle of the night.

When I have even a doubt about whether it was technically legal or not, I am going to immediately square my ass away to make sure I am keeping my part of something legal.

You can get your own wifi through XYZ company just like I do. Look them up at XYZ dot com or call them at 555-XYZ-XYZZ.

Now about that knock on the door at 1230 in the middle of the night, regarding wifi access.

I am asleep and my household is well secured at that hour of the night. I consider any knock on the door or other disturbance at that hour to be an emergency. I will call the sheriff's department immediately. That is for your safety as well as mine. In case of emergency, we will have already have help on the way all the faster.

Do not knock on my door at that hour unless it is a life and death emergency. In fact, it's probably best for you to call ahead at any time before you knock on the door. I tend to take household security rather seriously.

We both live out here rather isolated. In case of fire, tornado, or other serious threat you can absolutely count on me for immediate, temporary emergency-basis assistance. But do NOT ask me for any other sort of assistance. You wore out your welcome by putting me at possible risk with that wifi business.
