I used to share a connection with neighbours when it was way too expensive to get a decent speed but as it was my connection I throttled their ports to ensure my connection had enough bandwidth.

Or change the password to: 'internetisnotfree'.

Next time they come ask for the password, they will get the hint.

That's cute, but leeches are immune to 'hints.' They already know they're taking advantage and they'll never stop at the promptings of a standard of ethics they were born without anyway. Leeches have no shame, they don't care who has to pay so long as it isn't they.

OP, I think you're being a good neighbor. However, now that she's got a man, he should be helping with her needs now. You're a good man and you shouldn't be taken advantage of.

OP, I would just be honest with them and tell them that it is costing you $50 extra a month to handle their usage therefore you cant afford to allow it any longer and that if they got internet themselves it would cost less than $50 a month.

If they haven't done you a favour in 2 years they will never do you a favour.

They aren't leeches, they are human beings.

The isp are leeches.

They let the states pay for their infrastructure maintainence, research(universities) and recieve huge tax subsidies and breaks.

You are paying their shareholders, not for the service as the state maintains that in reality, but rather you are being extorted.

If you are worried about filesharing have her install peerguardian and subscribe to bluetack or iblocklist subscription lists which will block snoopers(riaa and corporate trackers) from seeing the content you download.
It's cheap, she can share the list with you and everything goes well in the end.

It will be more difficult at this point to charge her simply because you didn't discuss that previously, but in all fairness she should at least pay a 3rd of your internet bill. Tell her your rates have increased and you are going to get rid of your service for a cheaper slower service you won't be able to share if she doesn't kick in.
