Re: So, I have been helping my neighbor with wi-fi, it has taken a terrible turn.
Well, the title pretty much says it all. I have satellite internet.

I paid quite a pretty penny to get this installed. I live in a remote area. There are no other options available.

Unless you want a dial-up connection that is reaching 24k max.

My wife made good friends with the neighbor, who saw our wireless router on her device.

So she asked my wife if it would be possible to connect to the router. At first, I had no trouble with this. (2 years ago).

Now I pay heavily for this damned thing ($80/mo) for just internet.

I thought this might be a temporary situation. No.. This neighbor is still leaching my internet!

I have changed the router password. Guess what? The neighbor came down at 12:30am tonight.

She asks "when I try to log on, it says authentication error?"

Am I wrong for this? I really hate being an ass, but damn! I think they should have their own internet service in 2 years!

wtf

Or???
 Quoting: Kinect

Clear it up quick. She must pay for her usage. Act like you are a company providing the service and send her a monthly bill. If anyone else moves close by, send out bills.
 Quoting: Virgo10

I might get into some violations of the law on that one, but it's a good idea!

This. It is the only logical and right thing to do. Show him what you paid before and after he started using YOUR antenna.

This is a stupid thread with lots of stupid advice! OP is a pussy for not having the guts to tell his neighbour the truth.

You have no idea what the situation is. In the beginning, this neighbor was a single mother struggling to get by.

I have a thing called compassion.

this, at least in my opinion.
If my neighbour could not afford internet i would give them my password. Who knows when a good neighbour would be needed. I do nice things for my neighbours whenever i can. This winter we got wolloped with storm after storm, and i just was not able to keep my driveway cleared enough, especially after we had just enough rain to turn the banks to ice. I was forever getting stuck in my own driveway, lol. Well, the neighbours were having trouble too, so they hired a private plow to clear them out - and when the guy was done they sent him to my place. He cleared the entire driveway and every bank for me. It was amazing. It probably cost them a little extra, but made my entire winter.

hide your dang SSID man, it will not broadcast the wifi name you have to enter it manually. Dude im rural too and I had to fight for 6 months to get broadband at 3mbs a sec - with frontier. I tried the Verizon 4g home fusion and it was like $120 mo for 10gb - now im at $30 mo unlimited. Also do you have a home phone? See who the telo and broadband provider is and go to the hub office and just talk to the old guy in the brick building with one door (bet 100 bucks he is old)the reason for this is you might be too far away to get say they offer 6-10-12 mbs download but you could get 1-3 mbs download so it wont show you can get service. Anyway I would die before I had sat net crap and I found away to get cheap affordable internet. I came from 75mb download speed to 3 and I will say that the withdraws from that was nothing like wanting to smoke!

Talking on their Obamaphones.

You know who they are.

You can limit the bandwidth going to specific computers. Just find the mac address of your neighbors pc and limit the bandwidth in the router to maybe 5 or 10%. So if your neighbor want to use it, it will crawl.
