Re: So, I have been helping my neighbor with wi-fi, it has taken a terrible turn.
It takes a lot of nerve to be knocking on the door in the middle of the night.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 48889556

What worries me is why anyone would answer his door in the middle of the night.

Me? I'd just yell through the closed door:

"Hang on, I know it's got to be an emergency, so I've already called the sheriff's department and they're on their way!"

OP, you have been used as a sucker, and will continue to be used as a sucker unless or until you learn to grow a spine.

All kinds of posters here have given you all kinds of circumventions to slyly cut the parasite off of your wifi.

BUT the parasite will continue to invent ways to leach off of you unless and until you decide to make it clear that you are no longer a viable host organism.

NOW it is time to have the blunt How the Cow Eats the Cabbage Talk

Either call up or meet up with the neighbor. One way or another, record the conversation.

Here goes:

I need to talk with you about what was going on with the wifi. I was recently advised that what was going on with you accessing my wifi as a guest might not even have been technically legal. When I have even a doubt about whether it was technically legal or not, I am going to immediately square my ass away to make sure I am keeping my part of something legal.

You can get your own wifi through XYZ company just like I do. Look them up at XYZ dot com or call them at 555-XYZ-XYZZ.

Now about that knock on the door at 1230 in the middle of the night, regarding wifi access.

I am asleep and my household is well secured at that hour of the night. I consider any knock on the door or other disturbance at that hour to be an emergency. I will call the sheriff's department immediately. That is for your safety as well as mine. In case of emergency, we will have already have help on the way all the faster.

Do not knock on my door at that hour unless it is a life and death emergency. In fact, it's probably best for you to call ahead at any time before you knock on the door. I tend to take household security rather seriously.

We both live out here rather isolated. In case of fire, tornado, or other serious threat you can absolutely count on me for immediate, temporary emergency-basis assistance. But do NOT ask me for any other sort of assistance. You wore out your welcome by putting me at possible risk with that wifi business.

Now you state your piece, or or can call it a day. I've had my say.

Re: So, I have been helping my neighbor with wi-fi, it has taken a terrible turn.
Well, the title pretty much says it all. I have satellite internet.

I paid quite a pretty penny to get this installed. I live in a remote area. There are no other options available.

Unless you want a dial-up connection that is reaching 24k max.

My wife made good friends with the neighbor, who saw our wireless router on her device.

So she asked my wife if it would be possible to connect to the router. At first, I had no trouble with this. (2 years ago).

Now I pay heavily for this damned thing ($80/mo) for just internet.

I thought this might be a temporary situation. No.. This neighbor is still leaching my internet!

I have changed the router password. Guess what? The neighbor came down at 12:30am tonight.

She asks "when I try to log on, it says authentication error?"

Am I wrong for this? I really hate being an ass, but damn! I think they should have their own internet service in 2 years!

wtf

Or???

When they ask for more then your willing to help, it is no longer a nice thing. It becomes a dependance issue.

Now you are their tech support!

Just hope they don't get into trouble file sharing and get your connection fined/shut off.

Ask them to split the bill or say bye bye to I-Net.

I have changed the SSID name and the password. When it's later today, I'm going to tell them the ISP had noticed too many mac addresses attached to the service & limited it to two devices.

If they want to connect it will be $50/mo...

Don't know what else to do about it.

Thank you all for the advice on this thread.

You have no idea what the situation is. In the beginning, this neighbor was a single mother struggling to get by.

I have a thing called compassion.

Now she has a man in her life, just trying to be tactful here.

It's not easy to be mean when you care about others, okay?

I'm not a pushover, I just have had enough now...

In the settings on your router you can choose to not broadcast your network name. Turn that feature off & tell her you had it disconnected.

I would simply tell them someone downloaded copyright material and You lost Your internet service due to it. I have been warned several times about downloading content and yes they will shut you off.

incorrect. if a person uses your bandwidth to do illegal activities the persons bandwidth does not equal that person who owns it guility. You would be thrown out of the court room so fast it would make your head spin.

the OP merely needs to secure the router and charge them for the bandwidth or split the bill.

And before you decide to respond know this, if a hacker goes into someones computer to hide and do his damage to the net, who is at fault the person with the router he is hiding behind, or the hacker doing the damage.

The answer should be simple.

technically what you doing is illegal, You need permission from the ISP to do this, All though who cares about the law right? lol , anyways make her ass pay at least 20$ a month or something for using it , plus what speed do you get? here you can get pretty good internet for like 30USD

lol

I wish! I have the most top speed availability out here in the country.

I spend about $120/mo on internet alone.

Not trolling, normally it's $80/mo, with this increased bandwidth, it's $120-130/mo.

so actually YOU are really the stupid one here, trying to convince everyone that you just care about your poor nb. oh how sweet
First you said NOW have to pay $80, that is already heavy
and NOW again $120 that is a little bit more heavier
but still have no balls to talk honestly with your poor nb. and tell them to share expenses!
I bet, in the meantime that poor lady still have a couple of cats in the house and money to feed them and her poor internet freak partner

oh what a sad sad story tissue
