Actually, smoke is quite flammable. Smoke is generally seen from fires that are burning every inefficiently, thus the smoke contains a lot of the unburnt fuel. Efficient fires do not produce smoke.

The smoke from the fire is fuel...as it travels it mixes with the oxygen in the air...thus we have two sides of the fire triangle. However when the smoke travels, you removed the last part, the heat; thus combustion stopped. When you reintroduce another ignitions source, you re-introduce the heat and combustion begins anew.

You can demonstrate this By lighting a match, then blowing it out. As the smoke goes up from the match, introduce another match up to 2-3 inches away, but in the smoke trail. The flame will travel down the smoke trail and re-ignite the original match.

So... was there another ignition source on the left? Maybe a powerpole? Remember those spontaneously igniting powerpoles in Texas?
