Re: Something I noticed while at the grocery store...
A couple of times a week, I just go to the local super market, get a cart, and just walk around and make myself a sandwich or two.

Eat it in the store, and then leave.

But that's just me.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1112954

I appreciate your honesty.
Are you doing it because you don't have the money to pay for what you are eating, or do you just like to do that?
I'm not trying to be mean when I ask....
LOL..My ex could not walk into a Kroger, without walking around drinking a chocolate milk, that he never paid for.
He told me he did it, because he felt like the 'store owed him' that chocolate milk, because they were so expensive on everything else.

Re: Something I noticed while at the grocery store...
It's hard to believe that we're in a Depression.

It's certainly not evident when passing by the casino's, they are always FULL!

Funny you mention the Casino's...
I go there regularly with my Dad.
We go at least twice a month when he gets his checks.
I have noticed a huge differance in the Casio.
People do not 'win' like they used to, even just a couple of years ago.
The Casino dosen't give you near the amount of 'free money' that they used to, or free stuff for coming and playing, like they used to do.
Because people aren't winning like they used to, and the Casino has stopped giving away the free stuff....there are less people there than used to be.
We used to have to go at a crazy hour of day, like 3 a.m., to avoid the crowds of people.
Not anymore.
We can pick any hour of the day , any day of the week, and it is not crowded like it was before.
 Quoting: Woodsprite

WHAT!?

No more "free drinks and never-ending buffets"....why would ANYONE go? You have to know the House is RIGGED, anyway.

Actually, no. I've been surprised to see that the affluent people are still spending as foolishly luxurious as they always have. Then again, so am I.

Same, the rich are back to buying Hummers that they had sold when the gas prices were too high. Even the illegals are buying items I cannot afford.

What area of the Country are you in?
There seems to be small pockets where the 'status quo' isn't being affected, but from the responses on the thread, it dosen't seem to be the overall picture that is forming.

Re: Something I noticed while at the grocery store...
Along same lines, but a little off topic of stores, we take things to the local dump occasionally, and there they have a section for 'Donations', where folks deposit usable items of all manner of things. It is almost depressing to note that for the past year, there are crowds of people waiting for you to drive up and take something out of your car. They all dive onto it the minute you take it outta the car. In fact there are times when we have free time where we will say, 'hey let's find something around here to take to the donation drop off', just to enjoy the satisfaction of making someone happy....sad, I know.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1110765

Thanks for sharing this with us...it is very telling...another big indicator of just how rough things are becoming for people out there these days.
It is sad.... :(
But it's wonderful to know there are people like yourself, that are helping, just because you can, and it makes you feel good to do so!
You sound like 'good people'...rarity these days... ;)

Thanks for the compliment OP. In the 70's my dad {single parent of two} was laid off and we lived on rice and lentils fresh garden veggies whole wheat bread .Never got a sniffle that year at all and it was one of the worst winters I can remember. So cheap can be healthy but I'm sure I wouldn't be popular with my kids !! LOL

Re: Something I noticed while at the grocery store...
massachusetts here.

everything is slowing down, EVERYTHING. it is happening over a long period of time, so people arent noticing so much except for the effects on their personal lives.
milk was 4.15 a gallon yesterday.
lots of strip malls sitting vacant as well, or nearly vacant.

from what i've seen regarding OPs story, 3 things.

1. that is absolutely the case, more and more i see it when i go shopping
2. it seems as though they are trying to dupe us into thinking that prices arent going up on everything. case in point: a loaf of bread that was 1.79 last week was "on sale" this week for 1.79, ten cents off the "normal price" of 1.89. which means next week that loaf of bread will be 1.89.
3. the average age of retail employees has probably gone up 15 years in the last 3.

hang on folks, this is just the beginning. peace

pretty soon you will have to suck some grocery clerk cock just ot get those last cans of herrings in tomato sauce for 39.99 each

You may be right about that...and it's not going to be that far down the road either!
Kinda scarey for people that completly depend on them for their food supply...

scarey ? hardly its fucking a comedy gold , that not only do they not have anything but some 5 day old chinese take out and some soy sauce packets in the fridge. they are living check to check and couldnt afford to stock up if they wanted too cause their credit is gone too. so fuck em
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1112278

That's a pretty nasty way to be right now.
You never know...you may be one of them, sooner than you know...might want to check the 'Fuck You" attitude at the door.
The people in cities, living check to check...so many are in that position, because they don't know any other way.
It's a result of living in today's Society.
They show you all this crap, and convince them 'it's the way to the good life'.
They are trapped, because they didn't know any better...and bought into the 'story'.
Wanting to believe in something is not such a huge crime that should have to pay with their very lives because of it.

Detroit is one of the cities that is supposed to be hardest hit by all of this.
Looks like it is only certain areas in Detroit that are suffering....
The way it's being portrayed on the News...you'd think the entire city was nothing but abandoned houses, and buildings...turning into a 'no man's land'

Re: Something I noticed while at the grocery store...
I live in the Chicago metropolitan area, and the stores here are poorly stocked, and many brands have been discontinued. There are constantly empty shelves. As for the marked down section, the competition is fierce, to say the least. The stuff goes as soon as it is put out.
You are right about Aldis. People that would never dream of shopping there, are shopping there now.
The food pantries in the area are begging for donations. Many have run out of food, and are turning people away. Our church used to donate many bags of groceries weekly, to the food pantries. I think I might have had to drop off maybe a dozen bags from my church so far this whole year. We are certainly not in a recession, we are in a depression.
 Quoting: tiger1

Thanks for your response...:)
I've heard this about the food pantries for a couple of years now...was hopeing that it had gotten a bit better...but it looks not to be the case.

Re: Something I noticed while at the grocery store...
I had to go shopping yesterday...something I don't do often, because I hate to shop...LOL
While I was there I noticed something very telling about the 'state of affairs' people are in these days.

I've always shopped very thriftily, and used to be able to find great deals in the 'mark down bin' in the meat section.
There used to be awsome cuts of meat that I could get for half the price, bring them home and put them in the freezer for later.
With me living in a 'wealthy area' ...it was not unusual for me to find whoe legs of Lamb, or a nice standing rib roast in there...beautiful steaks and chops.

Not anymore.
The past couple of times I've been there...it has been like a 'fight' to try and even see what is left to pick over...so many people there looking thru it.
They aren't just taking the very nice cuts of meat...they are cleaning the sucker out!
I've never seen this happen in this area before.
I'm in an area where houses start at $500,000, and end up in the several million dollar mark.

When it starts showing up in areas like this...people slashing costs, and families 'cleaning out the mark down bin"...they are starting to hurt as much as 'the middle class' people are.
That dosen't bode well for our Economy .
These are the people that own the business' that hire other people to work for them.
Also professional types like Neuro Surgeons, top Attorney's, ect.
If these people fall hard like the middle class has...I don't think there is anything that can be done to pull the Country up out of this Depression that we've sunk into so deep.
Because these people are the last in line to fall, before the Giants do...they are sort of like 'mini giants', and they provide a lot of people with jobs, or jobs are supported by their spending .( like the lawn service people, the housekeepers, private schools, interior designers, furniture makers, ect.).

Anyone else notice something like this happening in their area lately?
 Quoting: Woodsprite

i have noticed the recession is finally hit the more well off as well. many big business and corporations in this area now have shut down or layed of their whole crew.
it is a total lie that the country is coming out of it. it is worse and worse.

... It's also astounding that most people today, don't know the basic "food groups', and what their proportions are supposed to be. ...
It's not surprising that people eat in the wrong proportions, because the USDA "Food Pyramid" said they should eat mostly grains! The USDA got the proportions wrong, and this was curriculum in schools!

I live in the NYC suburbs and things are still OK here. Real estate has taken a hit but things seem to have leveled out. Costco has a lot of inventory. Maybe analogous to your experience with "meat markdown", it seems to me that Whole Foods doesn't have as many cuts on sale as they used to.

Had a neat experience in the Costco parking lot the other day. A brand new yellow Lamborghini Gallardo parked next to me and I talked to the very ordinary looking owners, they seemed just like regular folks (but apparently with quite a bit more money), wife had bought it for husband for his birthday.
 Quoting: oniongrass

I saw a news story here recently that said the vast majority of people do not even know the 4 'basic food groups'....it isn't just in wrong proportions...it's they don't have the basic knowledge of what a 'good diet' is supposed to contain.
They are leaving out major chunks...like the fruits and veggies, because they don't understand you need a cetain amount in you life , daily, to be a healthy person.
That's bad education right there.
I remember being taught in school, about all that...there even used to be stuff interjected between the cartoons on Sat., about 'eating a healthy diet'...the lil guy with the top hat, singing about food.
He was great!
They stopped that education a couple of decades ago, and it is affecting the 'overall health' of our people.

Good to hear that things are still alright in the Big Apple...it's had it's share of catastrophy this decade.

Re: Something I noticed while at the grocery store...
Whilst I have not noticed any shortages in the stores, I have noticed that many of them are carrying less stock. Items that once filled a full shelf now only take up half. Many, many stores in my area have "rearranged" the shelves. They are not just clearing the store for the Christmas stock.

I have noticed that there are far fewer clearance items and that they have not reduced them as generously as in previous years.

For the last ten years I have been able to buy all the seeds and garden "consumables" that I needed for the following year in the reduced bin. There have been no reduced seeds at all this year. Good job I collect my own seeds!
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1112958

Thanks for responding...:)

Good info about he seeds and gardening stuff!
Looks like more people are buying them up, planning on growing their own food.
Nice to see people thinking for themselves...preparing for harder times, still to come... :)

I used to work at Bunton Seed....hope you are keeping your collections/ extra's in the fridge!
Seeds stored in the fridge, will last much longer than if they are kept room temp.
Some seeds will last 5-6 years or more, if kept nice and cool, dry.
I store mine in a plastic coffee can, with one of those 'dessicant' things that come in bottles of pills, use it to keep them becoming too moist in the cold fridge.
In Jan. I run my own 'germination test'.
I use a wet paper towel, and count out 10 seeds , wrap the seeds in the towel, and put them in a zip lock baggie, flat.
You can see how many of the seeds sprout, easily...see how heavily you need to plant, determined by how many seeds germinate... ;)
( LOL..I always end up planting the sprouts from the germination tests, I haven't the heart to just destroy them, even if it is too early)

You ever been to a yard sale? Those old bitches can get vicious. I was at one a couple of years ago, and they had a cardboard box full of old junk jewelry. Some old broad was muscling in like it was fucking gazelle meat still on the bone.

Remember that movie "Matinee"? It takes place during the Cuban Missile crisis, and a supermarket in the Florida Keys is swamped with panicked shoppers, fighting over the last box of shredded wheat.

I heard from people who lived during that era that shit like that actually happened, and that was over nothing! Can you imagine what it's going to be like when it really does hit the fan? Fucking mass murder in the streets over tins of Chef Boy-Ar-Dee!
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1100610

LOL...about the yard sale people

It is a scarey realization that soon we all could be headed in this direction...fighting over a can of something that used to so cheap and easily available.
But, I think if people see it coming, maybe some of that kind of drama could be lessened a bit maybe.
I hope so, anyway!
Just too depressing to think that we are on a 1 way train, speeding headlong into this, and there is no 'braking mechanism', what-so-ever.

To add: Make sure that the seeds you save are NOT from hybrid plants, as they are regressive in quality, for instance, a seedling hybrid tomato might give you fruit you would not want to eat.
Definition of non-hybrid plant = species, or plants that reproduce identically to the parent plant.

I think you are correct in your train of thought about all this.
I heard a news story last night, that said the new numbers had been released, and it showed that 49% of all the money earned this year, was made by 20% of the population.
That the 'poor' only brought in, something like 3%.
Said it was the biggest gap between the Rich and the Poor, since they have been keeping records on it, since the early 60's.
That story is part of the reason for this thread today...made me think about what I've noticed in the stores, and the reality that is bearing down upon the middle class.
That release of info basically was saying that the Middle Class has been wiped out.
Either you are very wealthy, or you are now considered 'poor'.
